  1. $1400 is what they once retailed for. They do not go for that high now. I've owned RTA's, SDA's, and Monitor series over the years. Good sounding speakers and do like power. I'd take a pair of RTA 15's any day of the week. They give the CF's a serious run for the money. What issues? A bad tweeter? That's no big deal. A person doesn't have to do near the modifications on those like seems to have to be done on Klipsch. Change this, change that, add this, do that. Capacitors and resistors are all I ever did short of maybe changing to the newer Polk RD0 tweeters. Where are you located? If you don't like them, I'd take them off your hands. If you were close.
  2. Oh, that's for sure. There are some crap recordings out there. One of the main reasons I still listen to lots of the old rock and roll stuff; it has dynamic range.
  3. Dave Matthews. I tried liking his stuff but his singing and generally jacked up sounding songs just make my skin crawl almost as bad as hearing Whitney Houston sing that "I will always love you" crap song.
  4. Except maybe some good ol' Steely Dan. Or the older rock that actually had some dynamic range to it.
  5. Yes, I'm in the hospital room with my mother where I've been for 10 days now. Been doing a lot of reading and pondering about SET amps and have bugged Maynard as well. It seems that when most SET amps are described, they talk about vocals (specifically female), instrument placement, staging, depth, etc. Are SET's more of a music genre limited amplifier? Since that type of music may be about 40% or less of my listening, and the rest being more in various iterations of rock, what happens then? I'm assuming the sound quality is still there but the power of the SET would be more taxed in trying to play R&R, etc. Do those with SET switch to other amps when they feel the need to crank? Just curious. I'm 50...I still crank it up on occasion when the family is gone. 80's hair bands, 70's rock, harder newer stuff, etc.
  6. There was a Black pair of LS's on Little Rock CL for about a week but noticed it was gone to date. I'd thought about them but decided not to.
  7. She is down to her final hours now. All of the signs are showing that the time is near. She has been comfortable and peaceful, overall, and I pray it continues. Respiratory is down to 9 or 10 per minute and hasn't been very responsive today as far as asking for a drink or even being agitated when being moved around in bed by the nurses. I've been here every day and night since last Monday and have seen it progress. It's hard to watch and experience but I felt like I needed to be here as much as possible as there isn't anyone else. I'm the only child of an only child. I pray for a peaceful passing for you, mom. I love you...
  8. S7 here. I'll never own another iPhone. The thing about the 5 over the 6 is you're able to replace battery if needed. If I remember correctly.
  9. Now I feel like a fool for noticing that my subject line says "padding" instead of "passing". Can a moderator please change that or is it something I can do? Thank you all for your kind comments. (Another Oops moment)
  10. Without going into a lot of medical history with her health, it's down to the last hours as I sit with her in hospice care in the hospital. 6 trips to hospital and 5 weeks worth of rehab earlier in the year just haven't been able to clear the many things that have plagued her. She's on comfort care now...no medicine, no oxygen, no telemetry; just as her wishes were. Please keep her in your prayers for a comfortable and peaceful passing whenever that time comes.
  11. I'd recommend a separate small tube amp of some sort and use the preamp out if it has it bypassing all those extras. Or even a separate preamp. I was an Onkyo/Integra rep for 9 years and had a full 7.2 system in my living room (all inwall and in ceiling speakers with 2 Sunfire subs) and still kept a separate 2 channel rig. But that's just me. Had Khorns, too, but they were in my office system with an EL84 tube amp. Living room 2 channel rig was big Carver amp and Polk SDA's.
  12. But the more I think about it, the more I'm pushed away from spending 5+ big ones on something from across the pond that I would have to figure out. Sure, iron could be changed out but that price could get me an amp from Maynard most likely and sound hella better, be built better, and I could understand him on the phone if it got down to it. ha I'll stay with my quest to find the right tubes for the ST70 and get it ordered.
  13. Bob Latino emaimed me back saying he uses the Shuguang EL34 tubes and described them as "midrangy and very good with acoustical jazz". That might be about 20% of my listening
  14. They are a sexy beast for sure. To do something other than what's there, I'd have to solicit someone to help out with that as I don't have that mental capacity. Ha
  15. I won't be able to hear a huge difference with my tinnitus so I've been deliberating on the output tubes for the VTA ST-70. Go EL34 or 6550? Bob is recommending the standard EL34's it comes with but I do like the looks of those 6550 tubes...rather sexy. What's the advantage/disadvantage? Worth the extra money? Which are considered a high gain versus low gain tube? Am I over thinking? About to order so only want to do it once. May order one of those Bowei 2a3c Chinese amps on ebay. Curious about the raving on the sound of those smaller powered amps. It looks good, but not sure of its build. But that's another story.
  16. Windows Vista 64? Holy cow...
  17. Triamping? With two woofers and a horn? It's just a 2-way. What do you not like? I love the way mine sound on tubes and solid state.
  18. I'd personally never use a A/V receiver for 2-channel listening but that's just me. Yeah, there are some that do sound decent and have nice features but then you are loaded with all sorts of bells and whistles that can, and do, add noise. Simple is better. Then again, I don't do home theater anymore either. I was in that industry for 25 years including being a Manufacturers Rep. Just let me with a sense of "don't want any of that". But that's personal choice. Definitely glad you got it figured out.
  19. I spy a Dynaco ST-70 in that Forte III picture, too.
  20. Let's see...based on LS II and Cornwall III pricing, about $4k I would bet. Maybe sub $3k. $2k would work. Not for me, but maybe others.
  21. Take the crossovers out of the '78's and load them in the LS II's and see what happens. I think I would have already done that, personally, considering they were there. I see them sounding exactly the same when the new crossovers arrive. Maybe the new crossovers pulled the life right out of them.
