  1. I've wondered the same thing.Man ybuy expensive cd players only to use them as a transport (ie using toslink, spdif) which all it does is transfer information bit by bit for the reciever to decode, so the difference between a 5 grand cd player and a 200 dollar cd player could be DACs but if used as a transport, they'll sound about the same given there aren't too many error reads from the laser. I'm probably wrong and there's good reason to have a 5k cd player, jsut not a good enough reason for me.....
  2. on Onkyos the sub trim goes to -15dB. The sub will be much dependent upon location and the gain on the sub. with the pb13 ultra i have, gain is set to about 30 percent or so about 10 oclock posistion. The higher the gain and the more effiecient the speaker the sub will be cut out to perform on the same level. so if the gain on the sub is say half way up it will reach reference levels sooner than the other speakers, so if the sub is set to high and the rest of the speakers reach ref point sooner, the sub will take the loss in order not to over power the rest of the setup. if 5 speakers are on par with one another the computer will not average out to keep the sub in the running instead it will set the 5 speakers to reference level and dock the sub as much as possible which still may be hot if the gain is set to high.
  3. I'm surprised no one is talking about reference settings. The reason the onkyo's audyssey setup puts the"levels" so low is due to the speakers effieciency. When you run he audyssey setup or any for that matter 0 dB becomes the reference point. THe point in which you are suppose to listen. With efficient speakers it means the reciever does less work to acheive the same SPL hence the lower level setting for your speakers. I run my setup at about 0dB with the relative setting and with absolute which looks like you're running is close to the 80 area. if you want it louder up the level settings. In the reciever my speakers are -12 dB for FR and FL, -11 dB Center ( I bumped the center up 1 dB), -9 dB for SR and SL and -10 dB on the Sub (bumped it up 5dB). Our room is like 2700ft^3, This bothered me at first, running them at the reference level but it's where the actually sound best. If I bump the FL and FR to 0dB or in the +dB in the level calibration and run it close to the new reference level say -12dB it seems like it runs right thorugh the amp and sounds bad. just my 2 cents.
  4. Not sure if it's a big deal to anyone but I had my eyes on the APC h10 and h15 nice surge supressor and AVR, tigerdirect has the H10 for 99 bucks which is a pretty sweet deal IMO. tigerdirect is also a authorized reseller so warranty and coverage still apply.
  5. welecome..... I doubt it,the RC 64 is still too new, if it get's discontinued I'd imagine that whole line would be on it's way out ie RF 83 RF 63, RC 64, RS 62 and the likes. All are still very new and I doubt they'll go any where for a couple more years just my opionin.
  6. I've noticed this in my setup and I'm not sure if a great center channelhelps that much or after upgrading my center channel the receiver was able to step up to the task. I think it's a little of both. I think Ones system is only as good as the cheapest comonent. Mine was my center channel, after upgrading it just recently Movies sound fuller, the Eq sounds better with 2 ch listening as well as the 2ch decoders everything sounds better. On the onkyo I ahve it seems to actually sound better when at or near reference level so that's where I listen to it at. between 0dB and -10dB (-15dB). Play around some and you'll find what you like.
  7. What's the size of your room. I would suggest looking at SVS subs as they are affordable and have incredible output, and are built fantastically. others will chime shortly. but as wuzzer said, you come this far already "don't skimp on the sub"
  8. I use WEp with no problem, I believe in the user manual it says PS3 wont work with WPA securticy scheme.
  9. you cold if you got an external AM/FM Tuner but if the tuner you use is in an integrated than no. the equalizer will only work with the CD or cassette player.
  10. agree.... I'm hoping it will pick up this season and really drive costs down. I love blu ray, just not enough to buy the discs we just use our blockbuster pass for now.
  11. that's great, i've read that passive bi-ampings does not improve SQ. I don't know what they're smoking, but it seems in my system to enhance overal bass and take a little sparkle off the top end which I do and don't like. Have fun, don't forget to run you eq setup again,
  12. there should be no difference in sound or build quality as the sport the same specs as each other, other than the build year. As the RF 3II's is a new model. I think either way would be a good choice. Maybe you could also look at the RF 5's. As far as the ID plate goes i'm sure there will be indication of the actual model....either RF 3 or RF 3 II
  13. whats great about jhw59s post from avs is how the PB 13 ultra performs better at 20Hz as far as SPL goes and will match it in music..... I love my svs....then later dwon on the avs thread "engtaz" ask what the dd18 did wrong..... is that you laager?
  14. I'm like cecaa i take everything apart but only after the warranty is up just incase something goes wrong. after the warranty they're fair game.
  15. having had a 7.1/2 setup with SDVD it was not worth the hassel of more wires and mounting speakers, after a while I went from 7.1 back to a 5.1 setup and haven't looked back. I imagine with BD there will be a benefit for sound quality with 7.1 sources but sources are still to sparse, to invest another grand in to rear speakers that get used once in a while. I know you can use them with the 7ch matrixes and pro logic and what not but not enough get focused there to invest IMO. As others have stated use a direct firing speaker like a bookshelf versus the WDST stuff used for side surrounds.
  16. The reason speaker failure is caused by under powering speakers is as groomlake said people want to get louder so they push the amp further than it can go causing distortion and eventually clipping. As efficient as Klipsch speakers are, to listen to most of Klipsch speakers at reference levels you only need about 32 watts. So if your pushing you amp to hard it's gonna "break" and in turn will break your speakers. With 75 watts on a RC 62 you will be fine as long as you don't crank the volume up to the +dBs on the reciver.
  17. also Onkyo's Audyssey setup is sometimes accurate other times not so accurate. It usually gets distance about spot on but crossover settings are all over the place for me. One day it'll set my RF5s to full band and other times it sets them to 100hz, Same goes with center and surrounds. Sub is usually off give or take 5 ft. So Audyssey is nice to get a start, see how it does and if you dont like it, adujust it.
  18. Wuzzer is spot on djnene, I would adjust the crossover settings on your onkyo so that they compliment the Frequency Response of the speakers you have (as listed on the klipsch website or use the figures Wuzzer gave). Speakers will actually go lower than their FR specifies but with roll off (or loss of SP at those lower frequencies). I would set the C2 at 80Hz the B2 at 80Hz ( and try lowering it to 60 Hz or 70Hz and see which you like best for bass response) and for the sub change it just as wuzzer said between 80 and 100Hz and see what blends the best.
  19. that stink thomper, I hope all goes well with the repar.
  20. your going to get alot of suggestions as to what to get and it usually with be 7 series of stuff which is great but may not be neccessary. AS tommyboy said you could get RF 5s they go for 450-600 bucks in great condition. Splurge and try to get an RC 7 (600 bucks or so), but IMHO an RC 3 (RC 35 or RC 62 for around 200 bucks) would pair great with the RF5s for movies. And For surrounds look at the matching surrounds say RS 35 or RS 3 probably get a pair for 200 bucks. then use your bookshelfs as rear surrounds and purchase a sub. Depending on the size of your room and the % of music v movies get a sub. The 10in sunfire is great with music in its mid bass and the SVS dominates in low bass and sub sonic bass.
  21. More than I should, not as much as Id like. I come here for the knoweledge and experience from the older forum members. I want too some day have a chance to own a pair of khorns, belles and la scalasbut in the interim I'm learning as much as I can so when I get a pair I willhave the experience to know what I actually like and enjoy. I like know what the different numbers mean. Thank You all for your input and knoweledge.
