  1. New or Used? Just 1K on speakers alone or does that need to include a reciever? I'll admit I use my Promedia Ultra 5.1's for HT duty....BUT...my room is very, very small(like 7'D X 9'W). I am 6' from the screen on the couch using a 27" HDTV, if I was sitting I would be able to tocuh the screen and my nose. I have a DD5.1 collecting dust that originally did the decoding/preamp for when I had the v2-400's, but then got a Technics SH-AC500D as my preamp. Granted I only have the HDTV cable box, and my HD-DVD player, but thats all I need. It does the job for such a small room. If you like the look and feel of the Promedia's, maybe look at the quintet setup. You might be able to use the SWS, as I believe it just takes a line in. This is atleast what I can tell from the manual. I've been tempted to try and connect my spare sub to the SWS out off my ultra's but haven't yet. The SWS does pretty good from what I heard, and may hold you over till you can get a bigger sub.
  2. Man, no Canon love here huh? If your wife is willing to take the time to learn how to use the camera, then by all means go for it. The D40 seems to be a pretty good entry camera, one of my friends got on a few months ago. Haven't heard anything bad from him about it. I rock the Digital Rebel XT. I spent the money on better lenses then getting a better camera to start. I can always upgrade the body, but the lenses won't need to change. Over two years now, and I am still learning the camera and techniques. This was taken the last night in Hong Kong. Handheld no tripod. (Gallery is compressing it horribly after I upload). Not bad.
  3. smijus, I think Amy has a valid point. You mention ford in the pinto, fine, but you leaving out other parts of the story, aside from it being a failure. Take current Fords. Can you directly compare a Ford Focus, to a Ford Mustang to the Ford GT40? Granted all made by Ford, but different levels, different designs, different technology. If you Jermey Clarkson, own the GT40, and have problems with the remote ignition, how does that correlate to you having transmission problems in your Focus. Two completely seperate platforms that share nothing in common, share the same company name. Granted a lot of posts seem to complain about them breaking. What % is that compared to people who have not had a problem. One thing I feel about the Internet is that people who probelms are a lot more likely to be vocal in ranting about a product then someone who has had a great experience. This is why you see mostly negative reviews on products. I feel your pain about having them sent back twice and not getting your issue fully resolved. What if all these posts and complaints are from 100 people, but over 1 million units where sold. Does it warrant enough of an issue to say your product is flawed when that is 0.01%. Ever hear of lemon cars? (I just like being devil advocate at times, so take what I say with a grain of salt.) The forum is a great resource, and if you search within there threads you will that some very technical people have looked into the issue and figured out what is wrong and fixed it themself or found someone who can offer the service to do so. I for one have had the v2-400's and 5.1 Ultra's and use them day-in-and-out and never had a problem with either. That is me, am I just a lucky one? I think it's great that Amy, Prof Thump and others are active on the boards, even if they can't always give us the answers we want. I think it shows that Klipsch is more then just focused on making money. They are part of a niche market, and this helps keep them going.
  4. You could leave them on all the time. I do....but if your blowing fuses, then that creates a different story. Something is casuing you fuse to blow. You need to figure out what. If you mentioned your center stopped and then came back. I think maybe its a bash chip on its way out, or something is lose in your amp/sub box.
  5. Where you in a rush to go? Isn't that part of the problem in todday's society? Everyone is in a hurry to get everywhere. If things aren't done now, or near instanteously, it seems to be a problem. Why not slow and steady?
  6. wow, yeah talk about gas guzzling. Man, but thats only 2000hp. My boat has two motors for 700hp... haha.

    Belt loop?

Jay, I think you missing Coyetee's point about being able to flash the klipsch case around, plus the Klipsch case holds the headphones and the iPod. Most other cases are for just protecting your ipod and attaching to the belt. They don't store you earphones and accessories.
  8. Few things come to mind with the recent posts. 1.) Granted yeah we are paying close to or over now $4.00 a gallon for gas. I think someone mentioned it, but look at europe. They have been paying close to what $8.00 a gallon, prior to the drop in the US to Euro/pound. Right? If you have even been over to Europe, how many people do you see with SUVs? Last time I was in London, in november, I saw around 15 sedans to everyone 1 SUV. Now back here in the US, a week after my return in Dec here in NY, its more around like 5 SUVs to everyone 1 sedan. Now I'm using sedan broadly, but look at the ratio of smart cars, or small cars with higher mpg's in europe vs here in the US. Even with all the hybird promotion lately, comn, how is the Yukon Denali Hybrid SUV considered a green car... What next a H3 Hybrid? Does it really help that what they get now instead of 8-12mpg now they get 17-20? Heck, I 'tuned' my card from 165whp to 265whp and I still get 21mpg on the highway, granted I can 0-60 in under 5. Anyways. 2.) Oil company profits. So Exxon, or Shell has made a few billion in the recent earnings report. Think about this. Say your company made $114 million last quarter at 7% profit. Not bad right. Now what if you made $11.4 billion, but still kept the 7% profit. What is the difference between the two? Is this really windfall profit becuase the oil price has gone up from $20 a gallon to $120? Has cost not gone up? Whats the difference between the two when underlying costs go up. 3.) Yes, Flordia, Alaska, etc all need to wake up. We need to drill offshore. If America can produce a few more million gallons of gas a day by having these refineries local and not being dependent upon outside, think about how costs can go down. 4.) Alternative fuels. Things like bio fuels are good and bad. Some talk about biofuels based off of old cooking oils. First off, it takes something like a years worth of corn as you would eat to make enough fuel to fill up your tank once! Is that really cost effective considering how the price of these goods are going up? Price of corn goes up, canola oil goes up, but then the cost to transport it has gone up. It's all related. 5.) yes I lack citiations, but its all in the news, CNN, BBC UK, NY Times that I read all this. 6.) Mass transit or bicycles anyone? :-)

    Belt loop?

Still cheaper...well sort of. lol. It can be expensive, especially if I start getting other heaphones, and tube amps just for heaphones...etc, etc. I was looking at building a Millet. Man, the cost to enjoy music while 'sticking it in your ears' or in the air. Good suggestion. I'll keep that in mind after my trip.
  10. I've had the Pico for about a month now, and have been loving it. It definately cleaned up the output from my PC. The built in card had a audible static coming out of it, so now I get a nice clean smooth sound from the PC, and with the commute, the pico definately seems to manipulate the line out off the iTouch in a subtle but good way, definately helps with the dynamics when listening a little louder as compared to the stock iTouch output. Enjoy the trip.

    Belt loop?

In the winter, I kept the ipod in the case, and just zipped it around to a decent point and let the cable stick out. Then again, this went into my bulking winter jacket. Now that the weather is nice, I just slap the iTouch in my pocket. I take the case with me, but its in my backpack for once I get to work so I can safely store the ipod and heaphones. What worse is trying to get your iTouch, and portable amp together, then as and addition worrying about the headphones ontop of that for storage.
  12. I wouldn't say dangerous, just may affect sound quality... i might be out on a limb. Give it a shot and see what happens. I've never done it myself, I've always had everything connected. To be safe try the one, and see how one goes first, need more bass, add in second, third, fourth. Your trying to use the systems as a dedicated subwoofer. It normally expects the full range singal from each channel. You can try the LFE+MAIN or just LFE. Experiment. Start at low volume and go up slowly, see if you hear any sonic differences. Are you comfortable opening up and working on the amplifer? I doubt your going to find a schematic, so it would be interesting if you know what you where looking for in terms of tapping into, but I bet it would be tricky. I'm guessing the system uses a crossover to feed the signal to the sub, so you'd want to tap in after that, but what the exact operating range is would be unknown. I would expect the sub and sat amps to be after the crossover. I would think even a Promedia 2.1 satellite would be a closer match sonically, plus cheaper, I see a pair for $25, so you can just use one. The last thing I can think of is that your still going to need use the control pod. Just to note.
  13. Your right on track. I think I know what your wanting to do. The v2-400's have the 1/8" jack on the cable which goes to the pod, that pod connects back to the sub unit. What you can do is get an RCA to 1/8" female adaptor to connect the jack from the pod to the LFE/subwoofer signal from the reciever. I hate stacking multiple adaptors, but you might have to get a RCA split for the single RCA LFE output to the create 2 Female RCA connectors which would connect to the 2 Male-to-1/8"Female adaptor, which then connects to your pod/subwoofer. That should be the 1-4 channels, which connects into the amp/sub. The bass fro the subwoofer definately increases when the rear channels of the v.2-400 is driven. The only concern I would have with doing this is that the subwoofer most likely has an internal crossover for the satelites. It's something to just keep in mind, even though your only feeding a LFE it. Ebay for a promedia single speaker? It would match right up. Sonically a 5.1 or even a 5.1 would be close enough, maybe. I tried to swap in my Quinet III's center on my ultra 5.1 and it seemed to blend in pretty well. You mileage may vary. Dan
  14. both nice video's, but Dr. Cochlear's has some good humor to it.
  15. It's a great write up. After reading the driver section it makes a lot more sense as to why people pair the cornwall's with the klipschorn's as centers. Very informative, much thanks. Will definately be useful for me as I've been looking around for some older Heritage stuff.
  16. Iguess you could try and call the Tech Support line and see what they say.
  17. Yeah. Do what I've done for the past year.... never turn it off. And I'm serious. I haven't turned off my Promedia 5.1 ultra's in a long time...well only to move between rooms.
  18. The head-fi.org site has some good information about ripping. I've ripped my music using a 192-320kBps VBR LAME encoder. It's great. The other thing everyone seems to say is to use EAC(Exact Audio Copy) which can compare you rip to others and does error checking/correcting. Basically will make sure you have a bit-for-bit extraction from your CD.
  19. I paid 3.999 for 93 octane yesterday... $4/gal by summer, I could see $5. Good thing I use Mass Transit.
  20. Here is a shot a few days before we bought the boat. It was floating, but that's about it, engine didn't run, interior was mess, electrical was all shot. So we have pulled those Ford 427's out, dropped in Chevy 454's, sanded all wood down(well almost, still in progress), pulled all new electric.... bent shaft, rudders, mold and mildew. It's been fun everyweekend since Oct. Lots of photos here. Wouldn't know where to start if I had to post things. Back to the Audio, so were still debating if we want an external amp. We are going to be running a Car Stereo head unit to drive a pair of Polk Audio 6x9's inside the cabin, and the Klipsch KHO's in the wheelhouse. Were getting a unit that has a 7" touchscreen so we can play DVD's, which we eventually hope to use extra video output to drive an eventual 27" LCD on the inside. Well the headunit looks like around 17W RMS, 55 peak, which should be good with the higher sensitivity of the KHO's....but that's into a 4ohm load, and the KHO is 8ohm.... Adding in an extra amp will only draw extra current from our house battery, so it's a toss up. I'd rather have the extra power due to the higher load, but my buddy rather not have the extra draw, and doesn't see us needing to play it loud. I'm just worried about a clean undistorted signal. If Klipsch only had some car speakers... *cough*
  21. Its not that they cap the optical out, its more of a limitation of bandwidth availible for the HD lossless tracks. The toslink bandwith can handle 2 channel PCM, or the 5.1 DD/DTS signals, which are compressed. The newer DD-HD and DTS-MA signals require significantly more bandwidth, and must go over the HDMI cable. I think that is more of less the cap on audio quality in respect to these new formats on the HD-DVD/BluRay players, and not so much as a reduction in quality.
  22. This is not your normal setup, plus it's a full work in progress, but we did need some sort of music while we have been slaving away since October...OK, didn't get to install this till February till we started to work on the interior(aka rip the ceiling down), butl.... say hello to a pair of KHO-7's in the wheelhouse of our boat. (35' 1969 Chris Craft Commander) I had jerrry-rigged a portable amp to drive them temporarily till we decide on how we are going to permanently power them as we are still working on the 12V electric. My buddy was like, they're a little big, but then once I got them hooked up, he was like wow those sound awesome from that little crap amp. Only thing is, bass drops significantly once you get outside the open wheelhousse enclosure, which isn't horrible. We might get kicked out of the cove with these if we crank it up anyways. :-) hey I wouldn't mind. Don't worry, I'll post pictures again once the wood is sanded down and re-stained and varnished with a finsihed ceiling and clean deck.
  23. Any other pics? Side shot? Looks like a nice copper top, and wood case. I can see why you'd call it the Red Dress Amp. Is this a monoblock? I don't see a pair of the tubes... unless my eyes are decieving me.
