  1. Did that a few years ago with some friends who also did 25 years vow renewal. We have been to Maui with them several times. I highly recommend Roy's. I understand they moved and are now right at the turnoff to Kahanapali. Great service and food. The food at Mama's is also good. We usually stop there before the flight home. Fact is, most of the established high end restaurants are very good. I've enjoyed Canoe's at happy hour. I've been to most of the restaurants downtown can't say I remember being disappointed, but the food does vary and generally you get what you pay for. Hard to not find a good meal. It sounds cheesy (no pun intended), but breakfast and or lunch at Cheeseburger in Paradise is a regular stop for us. I would avoid the moonlight cruises like the plague. Food is very marginal and after dinner all you do is putt putt up and down the coast. Horrible in my opinion. For something different I have really enjoyed the magic show at Warren and Annabelles's. Heavy appetizer's are served with a couple of drinks. It's mostly slight of hand, but slight of hand with bowling ball is impressive. Magicians vary and it isn't always the owner Warren, but we've seen several and they're all fun. The luau at downtown Lahaina is good but there are others. Stay away from the hotel luaus. Ulalena is a good show with impressive music if you like the Circe Soliel type shows. The trip around the island to see the rain forest is beautiful, but be prepared for a full day. I've driven up the volcano. Nice views, but that'll take most of a day too. There are bike rides down the volcano in the morning. That never appealed to me. If you like snorkeling, I enjoyed Wave Riders as it wasn't quite as touristy as the larger Trilogy boats but they're okay as well. If you want to do a hike, there's a beautiful park and garden on the side of the island where the airport is. Very nice. I've drove around the west side of the island. Very Non-tourest type area with narrow roads and large dropoffs. There are a few very modest food stands that give you a real feeling for basic island culture. That's my $.02 on Maui. We're pretty much foodies when we're there with snorkeling. The people we go with do golf, but they won't pay the green fees that are charged. YMMV. Congratulations on the 25 years. One other tip from a Maui regular. We alway stop at Costco that's just outside the airport. We pick up wine, cheese and other goodies that are a lot more expensive in the tourist area. If you're staying in a condo with a fridge, I recmmend it.
  2. No, my room is only 13' also. If you look close, the LSs only barely fit outside the 8' wide screen. Due to the doorway, I was very limited on the right side, but still have room to direct the speaker to my viewing position. The doctor may have to make a house call to clearly understand your symptoms.
  3. I don't know if this helps, but I was able to fit a 117" screen between a pair of LS. Obviously, if you can build an AT screen you could go larger, but you might consider this as an interim until you can get the end product speakers you're looking for. The screen is a DIY screen and the center squat LS is a modified clone I built. If you've got the ceiling height, you can fit a normal LS as a center. I didn't have enought height. I've since covered the top of the speakers with material to take away the glare and the ceiling light is normally off during viewing. Anyway, I thought I'd show you a screen between the 103" you have and the 130" you're considering. Oh, yeah. My projector is outside the "ideal" distance for projection and I have no issues with grain.
  4. You're tough. I'll get some pics when they're mounted, maybe sooner. There might be some early pics of my media room floating somewhere around here, but I've not updated pics since the finishing touches were made. I need to make some wall shelves to mount them so it may be a couple of weeks.
  5. Perusing the local KSL Classifieds yesterday and came upon an add for Academys at $200 each. I've had a pair of Academy's as my surrounds in a 5.1 configuration and just never pulled the trigger on lesser speakers to complete the system. I Googled the town in the listing. About 60 miles north of work. I couldn't get my phone out fast enough. The guy says he has had a few calls but no commitments. I told him I'd pay asking price. Long story short, I got up there and they were nice so I paid the guy and loaded them up. Now I'm wondering if the wife will notice the extra speakers hanging off the wall. It's pretty much a man cave and since I pulled the cash out of my "slush" fund I can probably get them set up without her noticing for months. There was a third Academy that had cosmetic damage and a SW15 that needed repair, but I had only pulled the needed cash for the two I bought. I probably should have asked what he would take for them, but I was happy with what I got. BTW, he said he got them for $100 at a local garage sale. Someone didn't know what they had. He knew what they brought on ebay, but evidently didn't want to hassle with shipping. His eyes lit up when I peeled off the $20s. Both parties happy, so a good deal both ways.

  7. The LaScalas don't have a picture so condition is unknown. Seller wants $1200. http://www.ksl.com/index.php?nid=218&ad=25259471&cat=&lpid=1&search=klipsch&ad_cid=2 Seller wants $1500 for the KHorns. Look decent. http://www.ksl.com/index.php?nid=218&ad=25161665&cat=&lpid=1&search=klipsch&ad_cid=11
  8. Been there, got the T-Shirt. First it was the Firebird (twins just didn't fit in the back). Several dogs came and went without my approval. (I did manage to keep the cat through the divorce. Great pet.) The speakers got second class status even through my present marriage. Ended up in the kid's playroom where they were abused. Next was a friend's basement for several years. Thirty years after purchasing them, they reside in my home theater. If I hadn't of held on to them through the years, I wouldn't have great speakers in my HT. If you have any options, consider holding on to them. Good luck.
  9. It took me a bit of time, but doggedly searching the internet I finally found one. I built a clone by using the Garage Sale (listing a WTB) forum here and ebay. I believe I eventually found the woofer on ebay and the crossover in the Garage Sale. Getting the specs and buying a replacement is also an option, but I understand wanting to keep it as original as possible. The other option is to rebuild it as you've stated. There are You Tube videos on DIYing the replacement cone if you're handly.
  10. Not too sure I'd go with the old console.[^o)] Then again, I fix and use old stuff all the time. [H] I love my vinyl and reel to reels. Enjoy[]
  11. The Champagne of Bottled Beers... I remember buying MHL with a fake Draft Card for ID for 88 cents a six pack. Tasted just fine then. Haven't had one in years. I'm a self confessed beer snob.... unless, of course there's nothing else availbable. []
  12. Same with my 4010. I got supplies from http://www.reelprosoundguys.com/index.html Good source for tape deck supplies. I found sources for manuals on ebay. Disassembly and reassembly isn't hard with decent instructions. Get belts, lube, clean heads.
  13. [Y] I'm with mark1101 here. I'm not sure a DVD player has the muscle to drive speakers.
  14. Boxx, I don't know your situation, but I bought a non-working TEAC two months ago, bought some stuff on the bay and got it working. Took about 3hrs of disassembly and reassembly and now I'm enjoying some classic tapes. The cost of materials for repair was about $30.00. I remember growing up seeing adds in magazines for tape players. Always wanted one. Now I got one.
  15. I think the quiet scenes below deck are phenomenal. You hear the ship groan and creak. Then again..... what's wrong with cannonballs and wind..[]
  16. Steve, I appreciate the offer. I'm just asking questions to educate myself. While building cabinets would not be a major obstacle, I've no clue about the rest of the workings, i.e. the drivers and I've no idea what amp would be required to drive them. Perhaps doing a search is in order.
  17. So.. Is a horn without driver a common item or something to be pursued? It's been relisted on ebay as apparently no one jumped on it the first time.
  18. Hadn't ever seen one of these mentioned. Anyone know the history? http://cgi.ebay.com/Klipsch-K-260-horn-REALLY-BIG-34-x-13-x-28-very-good-/280652985969?pt=Vintage_Electronics_R2&hash=item415838b671 This is a Klipsch K-260 horn. Jumbo size, 34" x 13" x28" ( W-H-D ). Excellent condition. Smaller Klipsch K-700, pictured by its side, is for size reference only, and listed separately.
  19. I suspect that you used latex paint to paint the room/speaker grills. The orange stuff available in the paint dept works real well. If you paint them again, I'd use a sprayer set to a fine mist so as not to clog the grill.
  20. I'll repeat myself... Have a look at Erik Forker's download page. He has a LaScala bass bin scaled for a ten inch woofer. You could still use the LS parts for the mid and tweeter, but the ten in bottom. Or scale it up for a twelve inch. Or make a smaller midbass tractrix. He has lots of info on his site. Bruce http://www.volvotreter.de/dl-section.htm A good alternative.
  21. I'm biased, in case you didn't notice, as I have two lascala mains and my DIY squater as a center. I use two academy (one DIY) as my surrounds. Building a speaker is not that different from building any other box. The lascala, with the angled front, is the biggest challenge.
  22. I took a look at my speadsheet and my Google Sketch Drawing. Fitting the squawker and tweeter side by side will be tight, but they'll fit. The base bin volume is a bit tougher. The lascala base bin is about 22 1/4". Add a top and you're at 23". The squawker requires about 6 1/2" to 7". The base bin therefore has to be limited to about 20" high (mine is 16", but I had more width to work with). I would play with the square part of the base bin to equalize the volume, which would affect the folded horn somewhat. Not ideal, but I think you could live with it in a HT environment. It can be built. Okay. I have to edit this. I did a look at my spreadsheet and put the numbers in. The base bin volume is probably not acheivable. It can be within 8%. Still, it's an alternative. .
  23. Here's my suggestion. If the material you had the entertainment center made out of is decent plywood or particle board, use it as the top, back and sides of the lascala. At $2500, I believe it would be decent density material. You would only be about 1/2" narrower than a production lascala. Make the base bin as tall as necessary to make up for the 1/2" narrower dimension available and play with the dimension to keep the volume the same as a production. Make the base bin out of good ply or mdf and use the back and sides of the ec as the sides of the speaker. Design the motor board for the squawker and tweeter to compensate for reduced heighth. I moved my tweeter to the side, but I wasn't dealing with your limited width. Some designs have had the tweeter incorporated into the base bin. Just increase the angle of the base bin and leave a square surface at the front of the bin. I believe this is very doable. I've got a spreadsheet if you want to PM me that you could play with.
  24. Then again, you can make a shorter LaScala [H]
  25. I've got quintets upstairs in my family room and love them. Are you feeding them from the tv? Sometimes the volume coming in from the source is too high and distorts. I try to have the source volume as low as possible when its adjustable. It's not always possible, but routing the source into the tv and back to the receiver is sometime done and if the volume on the tv is high then issues can occur. Also, check other inputs into the receiver (DVR, CD, etc.) to see if the sound reacts the same. Finally, check all the output modes: theatre, sports, large hall, etc if these are an option.
