  1. Jhawk is right on, as usual. The KV-4 is too bright for the Forte and Chorus line. At the time, I bought it because the KV-3 just couldn't keep up with my Chorus II's. I did have a KLF-C7 for a while. It is not an ideal match either. It tended to be more "shouty" (excuse the technical term) and therefore stood out amongst the front soundstage. I realized audio (or at least home theater) nirvana with the Academy. There is no center channel now, as distinguished from the left and right channels. There is simply a transparent soundstage emerging from the front of my viewing area. You can't distinguish the speakers, and the sound is uniformly smooth and seamless. My recommendation - if you go with the Fortes (a great speaker) save your money for a deal on an Academy. C

I have the original Carver Lightstar Reference amp (remember them?) powering my Chorus II's, and it sounds oh so sweet. Colin
  5. If you want to drive yourself really crazy and eliminate all potential sources of hum, then you need to think not only about electrically induced hum, but mechanical hum as well. Those big old toroid transformers in many amps can resonate and create hum independent of ground hum. Sometimes it's as simple as tightening down the mounts that fasten the transformer to the amp chassis. In other cases, the transfomer hum is bourne from AC offset noise, which can be combatted with things like the AH! AC Offset Killer.
  6. Vddobrev, Thanks for the link - much better. That is a great picture. Is it cover art, a painting, or something else? Very slick.... C

  9. The later Carver designs, like the Carver Research Lightstar (which I run with my Chorus II's) used a tracking power supply, but run class A at the outputs. The tracking power supply overcame the problems with low impedance loads that had plagued earlier generation amps based on this principle. This design is also what's incorporated into the Sunfire amps and subwoofers. In the case of the latter, it's what provides such prodigious output from such a small footprint. C

  11. OK, so this new BBS will need some getting used to. One immediate question - how do I make embedded HTML links active, so the reader can click on them? Right now, whenever I post an http address, I just see a non-underlined URL, (http://www.klipsch.com) which has to be cut and pasted into a browser. How do I turn them into hyperlinks? Thanks, Colin

  15. Ed, Now that you have those beautiful new cabinets, you probably don't want those old musty tube amps attracting dust and detracting from the look. I'll take them them off your hands at no charge. I'm sure if you ask nicely, your wife can supply an extra knick-knack or two to take up the empty space. In all seriousness, what a great looking (and I am sure great sounding) set-up. Please post some more pics whenever you have a moment. Job well done, Colin ------------------ My System
  16. I have to ask what may be a very naive question, so please excuse my ignorance. Do you guys actually play these records - specifically the ones valued at hundreds if not thousands of dollars?? I'm serious. I'd be scared to take 'em out of the sleeve. A curious observer -- Colin ------------------ My System
  17. Here's a review I found on that particular Carver model: http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/volume_4_2/av705.html Looks very favorable. They make several references to the design similarities to the Lightstar, which I own. I really enjoy the sound of my Lightstar when paired with my Klipsch - it's smooth and sweet. The fact that the reviewer made mention of the low noise performance is a good sign, particularly in a multichannel design where noise and hum can be your biggest enemies. Sounds like pairing this unit with the Outlaw processor, which has received very favorable reviews on this board, might make for a nice match. Hope this helps! 18. I would NOT recommend the Carver M1.5t amp with Klipsch. The magnetic field transformer in the 1.5 will likely create a constant buzz through highly sensitive Klipsch speakers. The later Carver designs do not employ magnetic field transformers. I run Carver TFM 35x amps for my home theater, and a Carver Lightstar for my 2 channel audio. Both are extremely quiet and have low distortion. The design of these amps is the direct predecessor of the current Sunfire designs. I'm not sure which Carver amp you're refering to on Ebay. If you post the link, I'll check it out for you. Regards, Colin ------------------ My System
  19. Ignorants? I think not. Bernard, it appears, tried his best to contact Myram and resolve the situation amicably. When the lines of communication broke down, Bernard shared his plight publicly. I do not believe there was a summary rush to judgment. Rather, we saw the forum members indignant that one of our own apparently betrayed another, and a virtual community insisting on answers. It is interesting to observe that Myram ignored Bernards requests and Erdrics inquiries on his behalf, and chose only to respond once we as a group rallied to the cause of justice. And Ill hand it to Myram, he finally came back with a detailed response (and a grand adieu). That being said, I think HornEd has it right we hold each to a higher standard here than might be expected in other venues. Myram presented his argument, but I have a hard time believing he would have been satisfied with the outcome should the situation have been reversed. I have no doubt Myram attempted to resolve the situation on several occasions. Upon meeting resistance, however, he probably figured that Bernard wasnt about to book a round trip from Australia to Maine to collect his $600, so he quietly let the situation whither on the vine. Thats simply not acceptable, no matter who is at fault. I think Judge Boa has it right. At the very least, Myram should offer Bernard half his money back, while the two mutually pursue the insurance claim. Short of that, I think others will exercise discretion (ala Convict) next time Myram comes hunting for a good deal. As Dennis Miller says, thats just my opinion, I could be wrong. 20. Well, well, well, there is justice in the world. Perhaps too late for our friend Bernard, but it looks like Myram's jig is up: http://216.37.9.58/ubb/Forum9/HTML/002444.html C ------------------ My System This message has been edited by chickey on 09-05-2002 at 05:22 PM
  21. Erdric, I have no doubt about Bernard's sincerity - my apologies, I didn't mean to imply otherwise. I was trying to be diplomatic (perhaps overly so) and give Myram the benefit of presenting his side of the case, in the spirit of our judicial system. Lack of a response by the defense, however, starts to sound an awful lot like a guilty plea. To your point, it will be interesting to see if Myram posts back here in a timely fashion. We know he still cruises these boards. The great thing about our little tight knit Klipsch community is that bad behavior is simply not tolerated by the overwhelming majority of the members. As such, this virtual community becomes self-policing and ultimately stronger. That's what keeps me coming back. 22. Assuming Bernard's claims are true, this is very disappointing. I seem to recall that Myram benefited greatly from his participation in this forum, especially as he upgraded his system. I've conducted transactions with several members on this board over the years, and have had nothing but overwhelming positive experiences. I'm sorry to hear that your experience was otherwise. Great suggestion by HornEd -we'll keep our eyes peeled for another Academy for you. Myram has recently resurfaced, as witnessed by his posting on 9/3: http://216.37.9.58/ubb/Forum9/HTML/002444.html I do hope the situation between you and Myram is ultimately resolved to your mutual satisfaction. Otherwise, the Klispch faithful here in the Northeast may be forced to organize a posse ala Kenratboy's suggestion. C ------------------ My System
  23. CK, Do any of these threads describe your problem? They may shed some insight: http://216.37.9.58/ubb/Forum4/HTML/003269.html http://216.37.9.58/ubb/Forum4/HTML/003662.html http://216.37.9.58/ubb/Forum4/HTML/004080.html Hope this helps. C ------------------ My System
  24. Flyin wrote: quote: Of course Chicky can argue that he was being sincere in his reply. But as some of you have revealed, it's simply not the case. Oh please, spare me. You edit your original post to remove the vulgarities, and then cry victim. Give me a break. My original post can be deemed flip for my hasty response, and at worst qualifies as a bad joke. But it was most certainly sincere, as was my follow-up. In no case did it warrant your original tasteless response. Let's agree as gentlemen to move on to more constructive dialog. 25. Flyin -- nice attitude, pal. I was in the process of filling in my original post with some additional details, but my little one had a meltdown midway through and I had to bail out. In any event, lynnm read my mind. Short of hanging 12th century tapestries on every wall, there is little you can do, unless you intend to pull the walls down and add professional soundproofing material between the studs. Perhaps you can approach your neighbor and ask them to tone it down after a certain point in the evening or early in the morning. Short of that, my original recommendation stands, despite your caustic response. Earplugs were standard issue in my old dorm...
