  1. For speakers, I'd build a pair of DIY subwoofers, maybe the THT Tubas. You will likely have all you need at that point. If you wanted more, add another pair of LaScala. Nothing else will have the same impact for $600 and nothing else is as perfect a match to what you already have.
  2. When you say "system", are you meaning a 5.1 surround? or music only?
  3. Hey Willy. I'll take that as endorsement of subwoofer success!
  4. My main listening position is on a riser that is 6" higher than the stage to begin with. I listened for a year with the LS angled up. About 6 months ago, I build these platforms you see in the photo. I pulled a string level from my seat out to the screen wall and built the risers to put the squaker exactly at my ear level. HUGE improvement! I'll never go back. My LS are crossed over to a sub, so I haven't noticed any change in FR in the bass regions.
  5. Or go with more potent subs! I'm on a concrete basement floor and it was hard work getting the shake I wanted. It is doable. Room is shaping up. You've got the patience of Jobe to wait 14 weeks on furniture.
  6. Another vote for enjoying what you have! Seems to me that the curve on bang for your buck starts getting really steep. Wouldn't adding 402's about double your initial investment? If you went that route, then just get Jubs from the get go. But I really think you're not giving Khorns enough credit. And THANKS FOR YOUR SERVICE ! Happy to hear you're coming home and to the excitement of a well deserved new system!
  7. Of those two, you would appreciate the advantages of the larger 83. However, with 9000cf, I would suggest that the large Heritage horns would make a clear difference. LaScala or Khorns both have an ability to project deep into a room better than either the 83 or the 63. Probably cheaper on the used market too.
  8. I swapped out my AL's with speakerfritz for AA's. The AA's now have polycarbonate and metallic film bypasses. I could really appreciate the polycarbonate, but adding the metal film did nothing for me. In all, it is now smoother than it was with the AL's even up to any sane volume level.
  9. I don't think the OP was asking if having one sub is better than having 2 subs. He's asking if one larger sub is better than 2 smaller subs. Therefore, I'd choose the two 10's, with those options.
  10. After finally going with dual subs, I will never, ever recommend otherwise! There is a different quality to the bass energy in a room with two subs. Not volume or extension, but just a more cut through your bones sort of feel that I never accomplished with one.
  11. Larry, I never took the time to think of it. Makes sense.
  12. I might have faulty Heresys then. The mids and highs are far less capable than those of my LS.
  13. I'm using LS with subs and have for kicks used my Heresy in the same positions with the same subs. T.H.E. Droid, have you ever experimented with your theory? It doesn't hold salt when I tested it. By the way, does anyone see benefit to the Corscala over LS if crossed at 80hz to a sub? I wouldn't think so. In fact, I'm guessing it would be a sacrifice of the horn loaded upper bass.
  14. Sunburn, I've built three of them and can do one now in about 3 hours tops. How about this...you come up to Greenville, SC. The manufacturer is about an hour north of my house. We pick up directly from them. We can build it together at my place and you haul back home. You can also hear my pair prior to picking yours up, so you'll know if it will work for you. You may have higher expectations... hahahahahaha....hahahahahahaha. You bring pizza and drinks.
  15. Hey Mike. Hope you're doing well. I read back my posts here yet again, and have to once again change my story. LOL After extensive room treatment and most importantly some EQ on these, I am finally where I wanted to be....OVERWHELMED! I don't imagine I'll be buying new subs anytime in the next few decades. Sorry Mike.
  16. My ears were burning and led me right to this thread. Go figure. Wanted to make a few comments about this sub. Mine took about 8 months of tweaking and a learning curve before I got what I expected. Out of the box and with no EQ, it is very raw and unimpressive. Just be aware that an EQ is essential, not an option. I have a list of recommended EQ filters direct from Danley that I'd be happy to post here if you need. One cabinet will definetely have the output necessary for you room size. One had enough output to be very percussive in the entire 18000cf of basement I have. But the second added a much smoother response in my room. You may or may not have those concerns. I'm using a Behringer EP4000 to drive both my cabinets. I see no reason to consider more expensive amps for this sub. Mine never clips, even driving two cabinets up into the 130db range. Get the picture. It is a loud amp, but I have mine in another room.
  17. I felt it pretty good here in Greenville, SC. Dishes rattled.
  18. You're right. My bad. I reread in a different light the second time.
  19. I didn't say that Klipsch was being "unfair". I'm saying that they are targeting a certain demographic. There are people that that product makes sense for and that's who they designed and priced it to. But we evaluate value from our personal perspective. Most of us don't have the perspective that fit their demographic.
  20. I'm with the OP here. Sure, the pricing structure makes sense for certain people (noone I've ever known, but....). The reason our whole economy is in the tank though is that everyone thinks they're those people. I'm a project manager, and often find myself lobbying for a particular contractor because they make a job painless and do it right. These contractors, to me, are worth the 20% premium over the rest of the market. However, I've had a few that I've watched try to get their margin up much higher than that. Greed. So, I quit using them. The value was no longer there. Regarding the above comparison of Klipsch and LaScala. I've got LaScala and a close buddy has Khorns. So I listen to both on a regular basis. We both cross them over to subs. I think a comparison supports the OP's point. I prefer the LaScala.
  21. I would do my research for projectors over at avsforum I've bought four different projectors over the years, and each time used that forum to narrow my choices. If you go into the projector section, you'll see that at any given time there are usually 2-3 projector threads that are getting 90% of the traffic. There's your top performers. From there it comes down to personal taste. I'm currently using a Panasonic AE4000 and there's not much more I could ask out of it!
  22. I've been wrestling with the REW route for many, many months and have yet to get anywhere. Unless you dedicate yourself, I'd just do the above suggestions of plotting graphs with an SPL meter. You can easily and quickly get a graph that way.
  23. I can't see any reason not to. Use some felt or rubber pads to eliminate any rattles.
  24. They are a suprising speaker. I'm very much pleased. They can run easily on up to reference volume. I use them on the sides, and use Heresy for the rears, so I mix direct radiating with the RS. It works well. The rears are about 10' behind me, so I prefer direct from back there.
