  1. Off loading the deeper bass via high passing the mains and using subs will reduce cone motion of the mains and help clean up the mid bass. Slightly better dynamics too. Agreed in the dynamics area but since there isn't an issue with loudness, real problem appears to be a two way with a high crossover. I find it hard to force midrange out of two drivers that are of those sizes and crossover point. That requires eq (then not as clean) or a dedicated midrange driver. Two ways are much better at presenting a relaxed midrange but many people want an up front sound.
  2. I must have missed something. I think the sub idea is good but based on the response, the washed out mids are the biggest problem. Not sure everyone talking about bass is fixing the mids.
  3. I'm currently using an AVR1700, 5.1 but only in stereo mode. The speakers are positioned in the corner, they will move closer to the wall soon, but so far I've tested them about 3 feet off the wall. The bass is okay, its not insufficient, actually I'd say the mids being a little washed out is the bigger problem. This new line of "green" H/K receivers -- I wonder if its not as warm as the older/higher end H/K receivers? The bass is ok, but the highs seem to be much more noticeable than the mids. Especially on something like electronica/trance. Whereas more acoustic/jazz/laid back music sounds quite good. If you are saying the mids are the bigger problem, the different receiver with more power is very unlikely to help. More power in the way of a better quality amp usually is most noticeable in tightening up the bottom end. Are you using RF-82 or RF-82 IIs? It appears that MK1 RF-82 had a 2K crossover where the RF-82 II had a lower 1.4K crossover. The lower crossover should give you better mids by forcing the midrange duties off the woofers into the horns. Secondly it would allow less cancellation between the multi-woofer setup with the high frequency horn. This would also be done if the speaker was made as a 2.5 way though I haven't gone digging for the crossover. What I have said would of course be if the II version was optimized for the 1400hz crossover but again it is a 2way. Mids are why you have speakers like Heresy, which are 3way with a dedicated midrange. It makes a big difference.
  4. Have both speakers been hooked up to the Pioneer without calibration and sub? One hooked to Speaker A and one hooked to Speaker B maybe, running both wide range and flat? If I missed this been done, excuse me but that is a comparison of the speakers. I worry too much when there are comparisons with receivers and everyone has their calibration turned on. That is like apples to donuts. If it isn't good to start, then why electronically modify it so it sounds good. If it sounds good, then you electronically modify it, it will likely even sound better.
  5. The 811 horns are 800 Hz, while the original fiberglass horn is either 400 or 500 Hz. If you have a set of 511 horns, you could use them without changing the crossovers. The unfortunate part is that the K-horn type bass bin does not go up to 800hz so the 811b horn will likely crossover too high. There will be a large dip in the response between where the bass bin starts to droop and the 811b starts to pick up. You are better off with a 400 or 500hz horn. Do some searching on the subject. Here is one article on a filter showing the response of the bass bin. http://www.northreadingeng.com/Klipschorn_notch/Notch_Filter.html John Warren can probably explain some merits.
  6. Hooking the plus lines on the speakers together on a second set of speaker doing an L - R and R - L signal gets you there
  7. Maybe bought by a big player like SRS was by DTS.
  8. You made me go plug in my Vivid 3D Theater NuReality VT200 (SRS labs) after 18yrs of sitting in the box to a set of headphones. I think I'm going to have to hook it into the stereo. It used to make sound appear to come from everywhere, especially convincing on concert videos like Hell Freezes Over.
  9. Considering the date of the recording I wonder if the Q-sound was actual positional works done during recording or something that was brought out of the recording similar to Q-sound's expansion or SRS? I believe Pink Floyd's "The Final Cut" was also done with Q-sound or Binaural. Appears to be Holophonics. http://www.ingsoc.com/waters/info/sounds.html
  10. Maybe the crossovers in the NS1000s needs a rework. Also the frequency responses of each speaker will be much different. Horns get rather ragged which might be what you hear. On even a 1/3 octave sweep, you might not pick up the peaks and valleys. If the NS1000s are in good shape and redone along with enough horsepower, they are likely just smoother across the board and not as peaky in areas (particularly based on axis).
  11. I wonder if the perception of more bass response has to do with the more forward nature of the KLF 30 vs Epic series. There may be more midrange/treble overriding the bass response since the CF series has been noted as more laid back. Also this will be further exhibited by the WTW layout of the CF. Being off center of the horn will make for a dip because of timing problems and cancellation in the crossover region. Lastly port location does make a difference. Glad you are happy with the CF-3s though.
  12. Well there is a patent on them, or maybe two. A type of filter/impedance modifier. The purifier may work with some speaks, depending on what you want for sound. Now for the price they ask, you can look up the patent and do something similar for a few bucks. Not sure I would call this an exact science though.
  13. That post won't be going away for a while.
  14. I am still contemplating a rebuild. Lot of other projects to work on. The other reason I haven't done this is that I am trying to figure out which I want. - I have 2 klf-20 woofers in a 5.5 cf box with somewhere around a 16"x3"x17" long slot port in them. Tuned around 31/32hz (discussed with Moray before). These sound ALIVE. The KLF-20 woofers are very good. - I have the 8 or so cubic foot box with two Focal 13v woofers in them with 3 12" passives on the back - the picture. They sound smoother and deeper though maybe not as LIVE. I can't put my finger on it. I may end up rebuilding the klf-20 woofer enclosures because I am transitioning to a home (slowly) that won't accommodate the 24" deep klf-20 woofer enclosures. I may end up with using 3 12" passives with the two 10" woofers, not tearing apart the klf-30s and selling the homebuilts in the picture. The SO thinks the homebuilts are too big for the location they are at. Still undecided. About the inexpensive woofers, I have been using the 12" passives from P-E. Actually very good for the $34 each price.
  15. Exactly. Knowing that much of the work in the data transfer that the cable would affect is done by the ethernet adapter itself, the problem imposed by a bad cable is not presented to the core processor thus would not be impacting possible timing of the music. There is no need for cables such as this except to make money. There is the possibility that in the noisiest of environments (electrical like inside a generator, transmitter, or something), if there were errors they would likely be handled fast enough to not affect anything. In an environment such as that, you'd probably get cancer from the emf/emi. Music would be my least concern. I will say, nice connectors on the cable though. Very pretty jewelry if you want to impress someone who doesn't know better.
  16. Hello, Wanted to find out if anyone had a set of Chorus II or Forte II mid horns laying around they'd like to sell. Thanks,
  17. To try and change the WTW configuration, you will likely need to change the crossover. WTW / MTM have different crossover requirements and the sound of the old crossover MAY be to your liking but is likely to be much less accurate.
  18. The Audacity audio editor was one of the things that came with this USB plug-in device allowing L-R in and out audio connections. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the compression and general messing up going on. Hopefully I can transfer some old vinyl into digits. http://www.behringer.com/EN/Products/UCA222.aspx If you can find a Creative Labs X-Fi Elite Pro http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,1877574,00.asp It allows you to do 24/96 and has a built in phono preamp if needed. Not easy to track down though.
  19. Many times people expect more out of small speakers than they can do, particularly in the bass. Cranking them up with a lot of bass and likely generating a fair amount of distortion that maybe you don't notice, will sometimes make the tweeters fry. Even both around the same time.
  20. Good idea. You have much invested in time, bed liner, and aluminum molding that people understand the value of though the price needs to be in line, especially redone. I've been watching a number of La Scalas come and go on CL. Highest price set was $1200 that may have actually sold. Enjoy them. You can't put a price on your work.
  21. Odd, works for me. Try using www.ayre.com/insights_dsdvspcm.htm www.audiostream.com/content/ayres-pcm-dsd-comparison
  22. I found this interesting considering the strategy: http://www.audiostream.com/content/ayres-pcm-dsd-comparison
  23. I think you are correct but again, some folks want to believe new is better. It is funny that several large players that sell higher end hardware don't believe that DSD is better though they are selling products with DSD support. Looks like a marketing strategy to catch whatever you can and if certain support is deemed great and it makes people upgrade (side ways most of the time), they will sell it.
