  1. Ok guys, I know this is going to sound like a dumb question, but do cassette decks come with remote controls these days? I have an old JVC dubbing deck. Just wondering. I haven't shopped for a cassette deck in years. Seems like everything else in my system (except my turntable of course) has a remote control. I still have alot of cassette tapes - concerts mostly - King Biscuit Flower Hour and Westwood One concerts that I taped off of FM back in the good ole days. You know - back when bands actually played instruments.
  2. cluless, That would work. Also at weddings I would occaisionally slip in "Love Stinks" or "Highway To Hell". Always fun to see the reaction of the senior set. Seems like the people who always complained the most about the volume of the music always managed to sit at a table closest to a speaker. Never failed.
  3. Having been in the DJ business several years ago and providing music for many weddings, I'd have to say my personal quandry is between " You Light Up My Life" and "Feelings". Jeez, the very thought kinda makes me want to break out (I mean break)my Boyz II Men CDs. btw - At times I really miss MTV's Headbangers Ball. That show used to help restore my sanity after doing a DJ gig.
  4. This is coming out on 4/1/03. I listed this in the DVD, Music & Movies section, with more details. Thought I'd give a heads up here as there doesn't seem to be alot of action in the other section.
  5. Just saw on Amazon & BestBuy sites today that "The Beatles Anthology" is going to be released on DVD on 4/1/03. It's a 5 disc set, clocking in at 600 minutes. Video - full screen, Audio - DD 5.1, DTS & PCM Stereo. Pre-orders are in the $59 range (list is $80). Sign me up!
  6. Thanks for all the info, links and websites folks. Looks like I have a good bit of reading ahead of me. Should be worth it though. Right now I'm just burning what I can with Windows Media Player 9, but it seems rather limited. I'm looking forward to expanding my horizons and having more fun. Thanks again.
  7. My prayers go out to the families who lost loved ones and to those who were injured. I'm sure many of us have been in very small clubs over the years to hear some of our favorite music. I know I never stopped to think about anything going so horribly wrong when I was in these very cramped conditions. I shudder thinking about how those people perished. Something like the RI fire makes me realize just how lucky I've been over the years.
  8. I have my RB5IIs on Sanus BF24B (24") stands. Picked them up at my local BB for about $60 for the pair. They were easy to assemble and seem fairly stable. They're just about the right height for my listening environment. Beats the hell out of those wooden tray tables I had them sitting on until I got the stands. Easy to position & toe-in etc. Now I need to get my RS3IIs up higher. Can't really mount them in the living room due to the layout. Right now I have them on some 30" pedastals my wife bought. Hopefully this summer (when 20 year old daughter leaves the nest), I'll be taking over her room. It's about 12'X12'. I know square isn't good, but at least I will have my own little HT room in the back of the house where I won't disturb anyone else (i.e. my wife & neighbors). I saw some tall book cases at Home Depot that were 1'W X 1"D X 6'H. I'm thinking of using those for the RS3II stands They should be just the right height, plus I can experiment with positioning them. In addition, I can also store some books and my growing DVD collection in them.
  9. Has anyone heard anything about "Easy CD Creator 6"? Is it compatable with XP? I had heard there were some problems with Creator 5 and XP. I was kind of interested in Nero, but what I've been reading indicates it is very technical and somewhat difficult to absorb if you're among the technically challenged (as I am at times). A friend of mind had Creator 5 (but I think his system had an earlier version of Windows - not XP)and he loves it. I've seen it and it seems to be pretty easy to use. Creator 6 is rather new. Anyone tried it?
  10. Re: original version. I did some checking on Amazon, and found there was a TV adaptation done in '88, with Richard Chamberlain and Jaclyn Smith. It's available on DVD.
  11. There are alot of very good suggestions in this post. I've seen many of the movies listed here, but still got a few suggestions to try out. Ditto for Netflix.com for trying out DVDs. Also I'm in the camp that really enjoyed "Eyes Wide Shut". I particularly liked the way the piano was used in building suspense. One I want to check out (probably through netflix) is "Rock Star". Even my wife who doesn't care much for hard rock/metal enjoyed it on HBO. I just watched "Bridge On The River Kwai" the other night and had forgotten what a classic it is. I had seen parts of "Band Of Brothers", but not the whole series on HBO and was very impressed. Can't wait to get ahold of the DVDs and hear it in 5.1. Another WWII DVD on my wish list is "Midway". Anyway, thanks for the suggestions.
  12. lynnm, A month or two ago, someone recommended "Louis Armstrong & Duke Ellington -The Complete Sessions". It was a 2 CD set with the sessions from around 1961. I couldn't remember if you had posted the thread or someone else. In any event I purchased the set and it was great. So far I've only listened to disc 1, but I was very impressed with the quality, especially for music that was recorded over 40 years ago. Even my 20 year old niece who was in the next room was commenting on how good and clear the horns sounded. I really got a kick out of the trills the clarinet player was doing. The whole disc was a joy.
  13. I agree, the stairway scene was unbelieveable, but overall I enjoyed the movie very much. Some of the locations were very good. I thought the sound in DTS was excellent. I didn't think the special featuers were much and the alternate ending wasn't that "alternate". I found the movie itself to be very entertaining. I'd watch it again. I'd also like to see the original version of "The Bourne Identity" to see how it compares. I know I saw it years ago, but I can't really remember much about it.
  14. Dean, I just read about Austin's accident tonight. Sounds like the big guy up there must have been looking out for him. My daughter was in an accident around Thanksgiving week. Early in the morning, about 2 miles from home on her way to work. She was basically unhurt, but I still can picture her being put in the ambulance. I know a little what you must be going through. Sounds like Austin is going to make out fine. I wish him a speedy recovery. My prayers are with you folks. BTW - I haven't seen Signs yet, but it's on my Netflix list.
  15. I didn't really care for xXx or Blade II overall, but the picture quality & sound were very good. Saving Private Ryan - DTS is excellent all the way around. I also recommend Pearl Harbor, but skip the love story and go right to the battle. I haven't seen the other two you listed. I also recommend The Fifth Element on Superbit DVD. I've had good luck with my Amazon orders. Also if your order is over $25 you get free standard shipping.
  16. fini, Kids - Can't live with them & we're not allowed to kill them. Just kidding. This is also a good reason to buy a used/previously owned instrument of any kind. Kids, especially teenagers, change their minds like they change underwear (at least we hope they're changing underwear). A buddy of mine has a 14 year old son who in the past 2-3 years has gone from wanting to pay drums to electric guitar and now to acoustic guitar. So far the only thing I've seen him stick with at all is skateboarding.
  17. fini, What are the six pieces in the set? Pearl makes or made good solid drums. I used to have a real old Pearl set I used for a practice kit so I wouldn't have to tear down and set up my Tama set in between gigs. The hardware was pretty sturdy on the Pearls. $250 doesn't sound bad for a starter kit - depending on what is in the set. Does it include any cymbal stands, hi-hat stand, bass drum pedal? Any cymbals with it?
  18. fini, So far I've gotten quite a few dvd-a discs at BestBuy. On-line I've bought some from cdnow.com & dvdplanet.com. You can also purcase dvd-a on-line through digitalaudioguide.com & if you check out digitalaudiopreview.com (basically the Warners label)there is a link to a list of music retailers.
  19. FYI - According to listings in digitalaudioguide.com and dvdangle.com "Close To The Edge" is supposed to be coming out on DVD-A sometime in 2003. I haven't seen a specific release date yet.
  20. m00n, Ah yes, those oldies but goodies. If you start humming along to 'Night Chicago Died" by Paper Lace or "Billy, Don't Be a Hero" by Bo Donaldson & The Heywoods we may have to send you to a therapist. I can't talk. I'm partial to "Sky High" by Jigsaw and "White Lies, Blue Eyes" by Bullet. If you really enjoy the '70s music (AM & FM) you might want to check out the Sounds Of The Seventies series of CDs at www.timelife.com. There are about 20 tracks on each CD. Click on Music, then on 70s Rock & Pop. Scroll down and on the left you should see Sound of the Seventies. Click on choose the volumes you want. It takes a while, but all 21 CDs in the series are there and you can access the track listings for each CD. I have this set and there are alot of good songs in it. Time-Life's Guitar Rock set is also real good. I used these alot back in my DJ days. I managed to build up a good size CD collection. Have fun. btw - "Brandy" is on 1972: Take Two
  21. I kind of remember seeing FM in concert in the late '70s at the Spectrum in Philadelphia. I believe the warm-up was Firefall. It was one of those hazy nights. Anyhow on to a night I remember. I saw Tom Petty & Heartbreakers in concert at the Spectrum around '87 and Ms. Nicks was showing up at occaisional shows to duet with TP. I got lucky & she was at that show. Needless to say the duets were fantastic. Stevie was wearing a very sheer white dress which gave me heart palpitations when the lights hit her (OK maybe they weren't "heart" palpitations). I do remember that Mike Campbell the lead guitarist rarely cracked a smile(I'd been following these guys since they were playing very small venues), but on this particular night he was beaming from ear to ear. Must have been the music.
  22. Cool. I checked out the ebay link. When I saw the C-3, I thought that was the one Emerson used but wasn't real sure. He used to do some wild stuff with those keyboards. Amazing he didn't hurt himself. Check out "Brain Salad Surgery" on DVD-Audio. Great sound. They toured with a quad sound system when the album came out. The DVD-A reproduces what they did in concert with the quad system very well.
  23. A buddy and I just got back from Hooters where I had the fried fish filet sandwhich. I cook a better burger than them. But hey, I was there for the ambiance anyway. Burgers, buns, beer and oldies rock "n" roll and oh yeah those Hooters. What more can a guy ask for? So much for little Wendy - shoulda seen little (did I say little?) Jennifer.
  24. Anybody know what organ Keith Emerson used on the road when ELP was touring back in the '70s? Just curious. This thread has gotten me all nostalgiac. Thinking about all those wonderful concerts I've been to over the years.
  25. Sounds like me. I've been at it for about 40 years also. I don't get to play much these days due to limited space in my humble abode. A couple of times I thought about selling my Tamas, but I can't bring myself to do it. They're paid for and every once in a while different guys from bands that I played in over the years get together and jam. I still enjoy it. I have a Zildjan 22" combination ride/crash that I bought in '66 that just seems to get better with age. If I use tympani mallets on it I can get a great gong effect. They'll have to bury that baby with me. I also have a Rogers Dynasonic chrome body snare (circa '73) that I won't part with - great rock snare and totally different sound than my Tama wood body snare. Thanks for putting me on to the drummerworld site. I'll definitely have to check it out.
