  1. You should like the RF-35s, they're impressive. I have never heard your center, so I don't know how it would match.
  2. Dean, The impedance of any component is the DC resistance plus the AC reactance. So, the DC resistance of an inductor increases its impedance and causes a loss of voltage to the driver. That wastes power and reduces driver output, not always what you want. If there is an inductor in a circuit that sees low current flow a smaller wire can be used and higher resistance tolerated becauses the losses will be low. However, that resistance makes the circuit behave a little differently than the equations predict, so you need to keep it as low as practical.
  3. I rebuilt my Type AAs with all Hovland caps (they were different and I wanted them to be identical; long tale). I used a 6 and a 7 uF cap in parallel for the squawker. The results on the tweeter were immediate and good. The change to the squawker caps were not clearly audible. Hovlands do not need to be bypassed. Replace the woofer inductor with a good 12 or 14 ga. air-core inductor; 2.5 +/- 0.1 mH is fine. For the tweeter cap, use a 3 to 3.3 uF cap on the tweeter; 3.3 tests nearly perfectly at 5800 Hz. I recommend you search the BBS for the 1st order design brother did for his La Scalas. I've heard it several times and had it tested in a lab. It sounds great, clean and articulate, and the crossover points hit nearly spot on at the 400 and 6000 Hz design points.
  4. Tony, I guess you'll have to ask. I was trying to say "ask for the K-55-X equivalent" without being so obvious. The curve of the -X looks really nice, but can't get as high as the late -V.
  5. A 5 month old couldn't care less what the music is. Buy and expose him to every type of music you can stand. Personally, I'd avoid deathmetalthrash, but anything that displays virtuosity in the performance will be good. At his age he will notice rhythm first and may try to move in sync with it. Lou Reed at a pleasant volume may be more entertaining than the 1812 Ovature with digital cannon just due to the pace of the music and fewer "changes". Later, start him in music training and provide moderate push to keep him in it. My mother did not push me because she was pushed too hard for too long. I wish she had.
  6. Parsons certainly has the reputation! Where do I buy it? Amazon?
  7. AND, while trying to catch one, you inevitably change it's state and position! Yes, Dean, the statement is correct. However, to make the equations easier, the common convention is to draw current flow from positive to negative (Like that?). The negative terminal is so negative because of the abundance of electrons trying to jump off and run to the positive terminal.
  8. The RW line is to be less expensive then the RSW line; essentially replacing the KSW series. I doubt the RW will better the RSW subs anywhere but price. The RW-12 was not flawless, but it's flaws were not nearly as bad, or obnoxious, as the Velo CT(?)-120 and a 12" Polk. They are to be priced the same as those 2 subs.
  9. I want to pick up a test disk for my system. What is the best one for testing frequency reaponse?
  10. Hi Tony! Yes. that is a good price. I was quoted $169 each about 4 years ago. Try to get the "new" version of them.
  11. Braided CAT-5 makes good speaker cable. I used 6 runs. Three pair are twisted and the twisted pairs are braided. It's about equal to 11 ga. wire. I couldn't really hear any difference and failed the A-B-X test which was setup with braided CAT-5 as one of the wires. It measures well. If you use teflon insulated wire you get a low capacitance, low inductance, low resistance (11 ga.) cable that looks really trick. It seems like Klipsch had a graph of the stuff that was about 1 dB down at 200 kHz.
  12. Laser beams and EM transmissions from parabolic antennae do expand in area with distance from the source. I suspect they may follow the inverse square law, but do not appear to since they begin as highly focused, narrow beams. However, I have seen demomstrations in a laser lab where beam spread hurt the experiment. By substituting a direct radiator in your test, you have proved that room reflections heavily influence the SPL fall-off indoors. We may be quibbling over the definition of "coherent". Still, I was taught a great lesson about standing waves in my L-shapped bedroom in my father's house. I had a low voltage AC adapter I could connect my speakers to. The 60 Hz tone was deafening in some places and a couple of feet away, it was inaudible. The room was about 12 x 18 + 10 x 12 feet. I had noticed the bass was different in different places and proved why with the adapter. It was kinda cool at 17. The room dimensions set the resonant frequencies of the room (standing waves). That's why I built my room with one non-parallel wall. I now must have standing waves over a broad range of frequencies rather than a just a few.
  13. I have to agree with John. You can modify your crossover to biwire your La Scalas and I can tell you how, if you tell me which crossover you have. Yes, you can damage the squawker and tweeter if you send bass frequencies to them. However, you seem to be a candidate for true biamping. Another power amp for the bass horn, perhaps larger, and an electronic crossover and you'll be set.
  14. I agree, if your are building it, change something to get away from 12 x 12. I'd angle the ceiling or build some sort of cathedral ceiling, too. Angled walls work. Hint.
  15. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3032874585&category=3276 The solder terminal version has a different phase plug and the plug is closer to the diaphragm. The 4k to 6k range is flatter. I have been unable to hear the difference. I must have abused my ears with too many motorcycles, airplanes, concerts, gun shots, etc.
  16. Before you refinish the cabinets, buy a pair of K-77, K-77-M or E-V T-35A tweeters and then 2 pair of "Z" brackets from Klipsch. The brackets flush-mount the tweeters with the front of the cabinets. The tweeter hole must be enlarged, though. Ebay will probably be your best source for tweeters, K-55-* squawker drivers and K-400 or K-401 horns. The squawker horn will be the hardest to get. You can buy K-401s from Klipsch, but last I heard they were ~$200 each. All 3 driver can be overhauled for reasonable $$ if the cone/diaphragm is bad, so I wouldn't be worried too much about that. Klipsch will do it for you and there are aftermarket companies, too. Send Q-man a note to see what he has left. He might be able to help. Try John Warren, too.
  17. If you can wait a little while, I'd wait and buy a Klipsch RW-10 or -12. In Indy, the RW-12 badly blew away the Velodyne CHT-12. The RW series is priced comparably with the similar Velodyne products. They have much less audible distortion because Klipsch uses a new driver analysis tool that lets them quickly determine a driver's weakness and redesign it to eliminate the problem. In the test, the RW-12 reproduced 20 Hz with a little port noise. The Velodyne produced only 2nd, 3rd and 4th harmonic distortion. Twenty Hertz was inaudible from the Velodyne.
  18. So do I. There's a pair on ebay. Are you bidding?
  19. Marvel, That's correct, It doesn't specify *where*. http://www.thunderwear.com/
  20. Hi Marvel, Georgia's law has another oddity. You must use a holster. In Tennessee that isn't required. Also, I checked this carefully and the TN Atty Gen issued his opinion confirmiing this, but for the purposes of concealed carry in TN, a beverage is not alcoholic unless the alcohol content is above 6%. Beer doesn't count! I haven't looked in a while, but 6 years ago, hint, hint, TN did not require concealment. I recommend against open carry because it makes you the first target of everybody, from the cops to shocked soccer moms. Be a prepared gentleman and you'll make out well enough.
  21. " I'm fairly introverted unless talking about something I love." - Gil And you're *fairly* articulate, too. Actually, guys, you don't owe me anything. It was my treat! I was happy Andy brought his Heresies. That added a lot to the atmosphere. OTOH, I really would like to get my hands on a copy of that old Jesse Colin Young recording; ripped if not an original.
  22. "Cutting down trees with a gun is more fun than hunting with a chainsaw." fini, you're right! I've seen it done and it WAS the entertainment of the week!
  23. Post a picture! I think you are describing the phase plug and that you don't want to remove. If you don't see it in the RF-7, it is inside the compression driver. The cheaper RF-Xs have the driver and horn made as one piece.
