  1. Under no circumstances would I sell Belles to buy something else for a home theater. I now use 2 La Scalas and 3 Heresies for my HT. It's great! Belles are derived from La Scalas which were designed for theater use among other things. i've hears a Belle as a center in a K-horn/Jubilee HT and awesome is too inadequate and cliched to convey my response to the system. Gunshots impacted my chest just like at the range. Heresies have turned out to be an excellent tonal match for La Scalas and will be a good match for your Belles. I would buy 3 or 4 Heresies and separates from B&K, Parasound, Mondial, and maybe Rotel or Adcom for electronics rather than a receiver. You can go even higher if you want. The exception to that would be the B&K receiver or maybe an NAD L70.
  2. I ran into the same thing with Paypal. If you upgrade and accept the payment, it is held in your Paypal "account". They will not credit it to your account, they will charge an additional fee to transfer it into any of your bank accounts and will not mail a check to a P. O. Box. I use one for all of my financial transactions. They are too much hassle, so I closed my account immediately after getting my electronic transfer. You commited to accepting Paypal in your auction, you have to accept the payment. We all pay stupid tax ocassionally. I didn't know ebay wouldn't let you charge the winner for Paypal fees. I don't see how they could prevent it. Just say buyer is responsible for all shipping and financial fees.
  3. No engineer would design in horn resonances to augment the output of the driver. It's too unpredictable. He may accept some to control the cost of the system. You are undoubtedly accustomed to the sound of the ringing horn, but it should not be there. The correct sound will be one without ANY ringing or resonance ADDED by the speaker system.
  4. Personally, I would opt for the Type AA, ALK or maybe the Klipsch Type AB-2. I have my choice of modified Type AA or ALK for my La Scalas. Though slightly different, both sound superb. I believe the ALKs would be flatter, especially in the tweeter's range. Have you read the comments on http://www.alkeng.com/klipsch.html ?
  5. Newtubes, I doubt we will know why the change was made, but the obvious things are the woover and squawker are different. Check your autoformer and see if it is labeled T2 and if the squawker is attached to tap #2 and the tweeter on tap #3. Disconnect the woofer leads and check its DC resistance. A K-22-E is 8 ohms. A K-22-EF is 7.something. I'll check the inductors I have and see what they're labeled. Changing to an air-core inductor will be a good thing.
  6. Without more component values, I can't say exactly what the 33uF do. They will roll off the woofer somewhere above the 700 hz crossover. Swells, The box at the top is the autoformer, used to reuce the output of the squawker and tweeter to match the woofer and the box at the bottom is an inductor for the woofer.
  7. A K-700 is a sawed-off K-400! The difference in crossover frequency is 3/4 octave, or 6 notes. I'd say the big difference in sound is the woofers, plus the autoformer settings in the crossover. The squawker in my Heresies runs at 98 dB and the tweeter at 99 dB, but the woofer runs about 95 dB. My brother just (finally) ordered the parts to reconfigure the crossovers and we'll address the difference in output then. If it works, I'll post the schematic.
  8. 1978. They probably have square magnet tweeters that perform slightly better than the AlNiCo tweeters. The Crossover should be a Type E that runs the squawker and tweeter 3 dB hotter than the woofer, thus the "sound" you mentioned.
  9. It will be a Frankenstien Heresy. The crossover point will be 700 Hz from the woofers to the squawker.
  10. Not really. You really should get another one for the center that exactly matches your first 2. After that, I liked the sound of the SS-1s and i think you might like them for the rears. Not knowing what sort of 7.1 you are thinking about, it's hard to advise. Where do the last 2 of the 7 go? SB-3s or RB-3s are obvious alternatives. They are not too big. I was impressed with the RSW-15. It is surely overkill unless your room is BIG, but the RSW-12 should be great.
  11. I will have to accept some lobing. It looks like the C-C distance will barely be less than one wavelength at the crossover point.
  12. If I build a dual woofer center channel speaker, how much more output will I get from 2 woofers? I had thought it was 3 dB, but I've read different lately. How does spacing affect output? Spacing affects intereference patterns, but is the spacing measured center to center, or inside edge to indise edge?
  13. His posts should be removed. We have had a nice respite for this guy for many months. A permanent ban on his IP address should be enough.
  14. Wasn't the WTC and Pentagon attacks unilateral?
  15. Swap your cables for any good, inexpensive store-bought cables one at a time to see if that isolates the problem. I had similar problems from my 1203A. It turned out to be the output relays. Parasound fixed them for free.
  16. The test conditions will certainly differ between makers. However, Klipsch is well known for building efficient speakers and is part of its claim to fame. It is not at all surprising that thee would be a 7 dB difference between a moderate priced Klipsch and another brand. The 91 dB speaker is atypically efficient for the norm, too. I run La Scalas as mains. They are 104 dB/w/m. The difference between them and most on the same amp is astounding.
  17. It should be plenty. With Heresies, you'll be using about a watt, peak, on movies.
  18. Theoretically, it would. Any poor contact or corrosion will increase resistance and maybe capacitance at a joint. However, practically, a little care getting a good crimp or solder joint will make a good connection and will not limit your sound.
  19. Dean, It is *impossible* to over damp the horns! No horn should ring, not even a little bit. Any ringing adds something that is not supposed to be there.
  20. It must remain soft to be effective. If it hardens, it will, slightly, stiffen the horn, but that just raises the resonant frequency. Heavy and soft will absorb the vibrations and turn them into heat.
  21. Black has nothing to do with anything, unless you have no other means of making an arguement, or are senile like Mandela.
  22. I used a KLF-C7 for a center with 4 La Scalas for about 3 years. It was pretty good, but not a perfect match. In cahoots with my brother, I replaced the C7 and my rear a Scalas with Heresies (to recover some floor space). The results are great! The Heresy center is still bright (waiting on parts to correct that), but it has the same drivers and the tonal match is soooo good. I get 3 or 4 Heresies.
  23. Greg, Thank you for all your sacrifices. You and your daughter help make us safe. I wish her well, plus success and safety. I will also say a prayer for her. No one leaves a fight without a black eye. Al-Quaeda started it and we will get another black eye, but we will finish the fight, too. If we don't, we will get a black eye every day after school, from now on.
