  1. http://www.tascamcontractor.com/products/PA-30.html They don't give enough info on their website, but this could be a Tripath amp. 30 wpc. Bruce
  2. Preston, Your question may be a bit tongue in cheek I suppose, but you can't measure the impedance with a DDM. You can measure the DCR. Impedance is a reactive value, which varies with frequency. A DDM puts out a low DC voltage when measuring resistance. Bruce
  3. Michael, Ya got nothin' to lose. Per djk advice, I used some Weldbond to fix the surrounds on some foam JBL woofer surrounds. This stuff is white, but dries clear. Very tough and stays flexible. For the foam, you thin with some water. Thin 3:1 or 5:1 and put on a couple of coats and let dry for an hour. Use Zig-Zag cigarette papers (not that I even knew what they were []) for reinforcing over a tear. You can put the Weldbond on a little thicker as well. Let dry for 24 hours. It only costs about $5. I couldn't find it anywhere, but the local Ace owner ordered it for me. Did it change the compliance on the JBLs? Probably, but I wouldn't know as they had splits in the surrounds when I got them. They sound fabulous now. http://www.weldbond.com Bruce
  4. You still livin' with the concrete floor in your house? Maybe we should send you some remnants! They have been carpeting at the school where I work. Great looking stuff [NOT].[] Bruce
  5. Neo, It shows for veryone else. You just can't see it on your own profile. I think they assume you won't be sending yourself PMs. Mine doesn't show to me either. Bruce
  6. Cal, I like my Merlin just fine, but am enjoying my Dynaco that I rebuilt as well. It actually sounds great with my SS amp I have used with it as well. I like Craig, but can't afford his amps, at least as things stand right now. What else do I like. I think the Parasound gear is great (no one here makes that). Let's just move on shall well. Dissent can be fine. Bruce

Seriously though, I rarely change the setting on mine but do on occasion. I can't imagine what Dean could be listening to that changes the balance so dramatically. Must be some of that rock and roll I've been hearing about lately. ---------------- Didn't someone say they thought Dean was out of balance a bit? No wonder he would have to adjust everything else.
  8. I stuck this on the bottom of James' talk about the Merlin, but here goes here: Still have the Merlin in the bedroom office. Switched out the Alesis power amp and set up my Dynaco ST-70, rebuilt with a Curcio Audio upgrade board with 3 JAN/Phillips 6922 tubes in it. Also has the P.S. upgrade and a replacement power tranny from Uncle Ned (that is one heavey sucker!). This is powering the Heresy IIs. Still feeding the PC to it at the moment. I let everything warm up for probably 15 minutes before sending any music to it. Mainly because I got sidetracked. Put in one of my favorite CDs-- David "Fathead" Newman/ Mr. Gentle Mr. Cool, a tribute to Duke Ellington. Biggest impression (again) is the imaging is rock solid. These guys are IN the room, and you can place them across the soundstage. Changing the gain on the Merlin only makes it louder or softer. The eq doesn't change a bit. That stupid line "straight wire with gain" comes to mind, but hey, it seems to be that way even if it isn't true. I'm still impressed with how cool this runs. I think I have had a pocket watch get warmer than this. Like the 8 ft. long power cord too. What else can I say. Very quiet (does it actually make any noise?). I love the looks as well. (gush... gush...) And it isn't just because someone on the forum made it either. Great job Mark. If the other models are as nice as this (and users seem to think so), you have designed something really special. Bruce
  9. I think the strongest hash I ever did was while touring with a group that played there. Around '71 if I remember correctly, but given my mental state then maybe not. Went to the bakery in the middle of the night to purchase some snacks. We stayed in a state park somewhere close by. It was autumn and it was beautiful there. Boy, am I glad that lifestyle is behind me.

  11. ---------------- Too bad all magazines, newspapers, media related are exclusively digital. I can see why as most magazines don't care too much for quality over speed. But that is the trend as always, speed. ---------------- Not ALL. Most, but not all. Perfect for newspapers and a 65 to 80 line screen. Even okay for magazines. I am sure there are some still using film. So far. Would be nice to have one of those 11 megapixel backs though... As if one expensive hobby isn't enough. Bruce
  12. Wouldn't have to be a 'pro' amp to have a rumble filter. Sure can play havoc with your woofers. I've had wind noise on a mic cause preamps to clip so badly that the signal just dropped out like it had been switched off. Bruce
  13. Tony, I'm just playin' with you. There should be a noticable difference between the two, in favor of the KHorns. Getting the crossovers freshened up a bit would probably be the least expensive 'fix' for these. I rip to mp3 at 320k. Still way smaller than the wav/cda file and the sound is tolerable. Even with the new Merlin in my system. Got to say that it is wonnderful. Imaging is solid as a rock, even on 128k mp3 files. With CDs it's just better. Bruce
  14. Tom, Cameras with the miniDV format will record audio at 16 bit 48Khz. OR, as is the default on many cameras, it will give you 12bit audio at 32Khz. Using firewire or usb, you can suck the audio over to the PC and clean it up, edit it and it will do fine. Some cameras do not have an external mic input. Bummer really, as the less expensive ones need an external mic even more as the motor noise is often picked up by the built in mic. Depending on your camera, and the mic(s) you get, you may or may not need a mixer. They can be had for under a $100. Behringer, Alesis, Samson, Nady, Rolls. The Rolls Playmate MX56S is ugly, small, has one XLR mic input, a couple of line inputs. But it is BATTERY paowered. With it and the camera, you wouldn't have to plug anything else into the wall. Bruce
  15. Michael, I hope you know I was really kidding about the Rhinoliner. It looks like the logo and text are silkscreened onto the back side of some polycarbonate or lexan material. Bruce
  16. This is the crossover time for the Heresy. Are they original Heresys or the newer design? If the original, the tweeter is the same for KHorn as for the Heresy. Same for the mid driver. I would be more inclined to think you have something out of spec on the KHorns. Tony! Stop dissin' my Heresys. Bruce
  17. Why don't you just take them to a Rhinoliner shop? That would certainly make those cabinets durable. Somewhere Michael had mentioned this in another thread, and I thought I posted about a dude on the Lansing Heritage forums who used some white kind of paint for some yellowed JBL Aquaplas drivers (like on 4311s). Very cool to try this Michael. Bruce
  18. Wow...the forum is back up and we made it home. We unpacked the car and suitcases. Feels good to be back in our own house. Right now I have the Heresys in the bedroom, where we both have office space off in the corner. Hooked up the Merlin, feeding my Alesis SS amp. Since I had a contractor here fixing some termite damage, I didn't have the Dynaco set back up yet. Mark, nice line cord. That has to be over 8 feet long. Let it warm up a bit. First thing out was Hilary Hahn playing some Barber. NICE!!! What can I say? Very smooth. I can't go into all the audiophile details. Juust a nice sound. Imaging is wonderful, and solid as a rock. Beautiful look as well. I can't believe that it doesn't get any warmer than it does. Love the walnut end pieces. I'll write more later. Thanks to all. If all goes well, Barbara will start treament next Monday or Tuesday. Depends on outcome of one of the tests. Bruce
  19. Mark, I have tried to PM a couple of people but have heard some folks say the PM feature isn't working correctly. So... I admit I had a heads up from Amy that a package was coming to my house, but I am a bit flabbergasted at what has shown up on my doorstep. I have a list of names of all the guilty involved, so I intend to contact you somehow, probably now by email. A Merlin! I am humbled by the generosity of some here on the forum (actually, everyone on this forum is generous, just at different times and in different ways). My wife and I will certainly enjoy the gift. We are presently in Indiana, dropping our youngest off at college (Valpo). My oldest son was home to bring the box inside and check to make sure it was okay. It was a bit damp on the outside due to some afternoon rainstorm, but just fine inside, due to the fine packaging. So, from 600 miles away, I can only look at the pic on the Juicy Music Audio website and say thank you so very much. Monday nite we'll be listening to it though. Wednesday we go back to Atlanta for an MRI of my wife's brain. If that shows no brain lesions, she will start her other treatment on either the 29th or 30th of August. Music is a big part of our family, and our youngest is majoring in music composition at Valpo. He and my wife have spent a lot of time together the past few years, as she ferried him to music lessons, youth orchestra, etc. Below is something she posted on her blog where she is chronicling her fight: I know that I'm going to miss him greatly, not just because of the usual mother-son/youngest child leaving home situation, but because I really enjoy his company. I've learned so much from him as we've spent time together, especially in the past few years when the two older children have been away from home. He's a wealth of knowledge about books, music, composers, history, current events; and I treasure the great conversations we've had. I'm so happy to think that he's found a university and a community that will continue to encourage the growth I've seen in him. I look forward to getting to know the person this experience will make him, even while I acknowledge that his absence is really going to be felt around here. So, from the two of us, thanks for the gift. We will treasure it as we use it to listen to great music. Maybe even some awful music on occasion. Bruce
  20. Nick, I'm 600 miles from home at the moment. If you want to do that for Dee, that won't hurt my feelings any. I would give him the file in more than one format. Anyone here in the U.S. that deals with printing should be able to handle either a Photoshop file or an Illustrator file. Depending on the use, 300dpi would be fine. A simpler idea might be to use Acrobat, as a pdf will scale well and anyone can use it. Bruce
  21. Streaming audio usually cannot be captured without a 3rd party utility. I have used "Virtual Audio Cable" to go from one application to another or try out "Total Recorder". If have an older version of VAC that I have used, and it owrks with no noise insertion as the newer version demo and the demo version of TR. Bruce

  24. Great news on the stress test finished this day (Thursday). She passed with flying colors! They were quite happy with the results. She managed to stay on the treadmill for eight minutes. At the 7 minute mark they asked her if she could go another minute. She said she would try, and after a long time had passed, they asked if she could do 40 seconds more to get to the eight minutes. Huffing and puffing, but she made it. If the MRI next Wednesday shows nothing extra, she will start treatment at the end of the month. Thanks for your support guys (and gals ) Son is packing for college and we are supposed to leave early tomorrow. This summer has flown by! Don't think it will slow down anytime soon. Time to put on some music and relax. Bruce
  25. I know of some on the Lansing Heritage forums who have used a product to go over the white JBL drivers (I think the trademark name is Aquaplas). It can turn quite yellow over time. Didn't add enough to the mass of the cone to change the compliance at all. Bruce
