  1. Very good news Joe. My wife had melanoma surgery a few years ago, and has been clear on every checkup since. This puts life in perspective. Marvel
  2. Do the capacitors mount to a pc board? The solder connections on the capacitors may not be good. They can look good sometimes even when they are not. If you are handy with a soldering iron, you can reflow the solder on the connections and then try it out. You should first make sure the capacitors are discharged. Uuse a fairly large value resistor and a couple of clip leads and connect to ground, to drain them. Or find someone you trust who can do this for you. A friend of mine just got a 100 wpc solid state amp for free. The solder connection on the fuse holder was bad. It only took about ten minutes to disassemble the amp to find the problem and to fix it (okay, so he paid me to fix it. Repaired his guitar amp too). Marvel

The horn you choose will determine the EQ required. In my listening test the Radian was EQ'd to have exactly the same response as the JBL. I sent the Radian drivers back, they don't sound as good as the JBL. An Altec 288 smokes either of them. ---------------- Gee, thanks Dennis. Now I have to think about a 1.4 inch throat. What about the JBL 2426? It's only a one inch throat. I'm only trying to have it sound good in my living room, not a gymnasium or bar. Marvel
  4. If there is a manual with that 730, I will gladly pay for a copy of it. I can't find anything but the specifications online anywhere. I tested mine out last night. It is a very quiet amp, with plenty of power (okay, so it's only 40 wpc). Marvel
  5. L&M Music in Chattanooga used to have packing/shipping tape that read "Fragile Equipment Inside -- Please toss underhand!" Marvel

I run into quite a bit of the stuff along with vintage Macintosh in Korean audio boutiques. ---------------- I was really joking, but they do run up the prices.
  7. Not a shipping problem, but we purchased a hardware router for our network late last summer. It would reboot two to three times a day. They would send us new firmware to upload that 'fixed' it. Nope. Same thing over and over...for months. Last month they refunded the full amount, $8,000 plus. We bought a different brand to replace it (for an additional $2-3K. They had told us for over a month that they would refund the money, but we didn't really believe them. Marvel
  8. Shhhshh!!! Don't tell Rupert Neve it doesn't matter.
  9. Codhead, Does that have one of Ned's 13 pound power transformers on it? If it does it's no wonder it bent. The way to send it is upside down, no cage on it, with the trannies in solid foam. The chassis is lighter and won't do the damage on its own. That is clean looking. Marvel
  10. Michael, The 730 is sweet. Mine (purchased from Jim COrnell) arrived this morning. I got it for a friend of mine and almost hate to pass it on . This one has a slight ding in the bottom edge of the faceplate, but it isn't very noticeable at all. My oldest son has a 430. They are nice receivers. Marvel
  11. Having the woofer be a direct radiator would allow it to go much higher than any of the folded horns.
  12. They have passed law in Korea and Japan that they must buy up vintage JBL... Now we can't afford them.

  14. The early Heresys had the thinner back (removable back models), while the HIIs are all 3/4 inch with access through the front by removing drivers. The transition models are up for grabs. A slight difference isn't going to matter much.
  15. Craig, My ST-70 has individual controls for each output tube. And it is staying very stable. 'Bout time I checked them again though so the reminder is always a good thing. Marvel

If I do anything long I type it in Notepad and copy it over. Then it the forum software eats it I still have it to post without re-typing it. Max, If everything drifts the same, it might not be the tubes but something else drifting out over time, like something in the power supply. My 2 cents.
  17. But how often do you have to bias the things once you have it set up? After I set up my FD-70 (Formerly Dynaco), I only check it ecery once in awhile, and it is usually spot on. I would assume they like the sound of the EL84 tubes, but wanted more power. Easy to say since I don't have to mess with it. Marvel

It may be quite true, but anything I have mixed on mine has sounded pretty balanced on everything else. (Then again, maybe not. It isn't my fulltime job) Always thought the mids were a tad pronounced, which may be why I thought they sounded close to my Heresys. It's all in knowing what they sound like (source, mixer, amp, speakers), and mixing with that in mind. EDIT: What I find interesting is that all the music faculty where I work, only have boom boxes in their offices. The audio is awful!

More tubes in the output equals more headaches and distortion. Craig ---------------- Craig, Are you saying you would rather use two higher wattage output tubes per channel instead of four lower wattage? Say two 6550s instaed of the four EL84s per side? I am curious to know your reasoning. I understand it would be more work to bias the tubes, etc. but what else do you mean? And they are a cool looking amp. Marvel
  20. One of our members who lives in Alaska has one as I recall. I thought he liked it a lot. Unfortunately, I don't remember his name. Marvel
  21. Right click on teh link and do a save as. Make the file extension .gif. Weird how that worked. Try this: Schematizoa
  22. Ben, Family -- the best landmarks of all! Puts everything else in perspective. Marvel
  23. I don't have a clue yet. Hopefully it will be something I can afford (that's a good one isn't it?)
  24. This it too funny! Thanks for the early Sat. morning humor. After a long week, I needed it.
