  1. BUWAAAAAHAHAAAAAW............WE HAVE YOU NOW!!!! There is no turning back for you now Mi Amigo!! Save yourself by buying a pair of Klipschorns next. Everything Klipsch is great but having been bitten by the Heritage Klipsch bug you will never be really happy until you have the mighty Klipschorn. Search Ebay and Audiogon and your local buy/sell paper for potential deals. As good as the Heresy is a pair of Khorns will make them seem puny in comparison.
  2. Probably is not a problem. Transistors are essentially instant on/instant off devices. Thus when a transistor stops getting power the signal stops being amplified. Therefore you will rarely if ever hear the effects of the capacitors in the circuit as they discharge beyond a pop sound when the power stops being supplied. Tubes on the other hand are not instant instant/on instant/off devices and will continue to provide a signal after the power stops until such time as they cool to the point that the cathodes stop emitting electrons to the grid. During that brief interval you will sometimes hear various noises created by the various capacitors in the preamp and/or power amp sections as they discharge. Certainly! Do check with NOSValves and MDENEEN on this issue in case there is some underlying problem that they may be aware of but I suspect that what you describe is normal and not a cause for concern.
  3. Since you now have one Lascala ( Congratulations! ),You are now in a great position! There are any number of folks here looking for a center speaker for Khorns: Your options ? Sell your single for a reasonable profit. Split a pair with someone wanting a single Lascala for a centre speaker.
  4. C'est Si Bon! Mon Ami Or if you are one of Dem Hinglish Pigs: * Congratulations My Friend! I wouldn't part with my hard-earned Khorns except under threat of death! * Watch the first few minutes of Slapshot
  5. I hooked it up to a pair of Minimus 7s and other than a certain degree of scratchiness in the volume control it seems fine. The tuner works and A CDP sounds good through the Aux inputs. I have not yet tested the phono stage.
  6. About 20 years ago a fellow walked into my second hand store carrying a rack mountable chassis containing an array of tubes. It was part of a first generation Univac ca. 1948. It was not for sale but as he knew that I was a computer freak and a collecter of odd bits and pieces he thought I would find it to be of interest.IIRC he told me that the unit was a single memory bit ( not a byte but a bit ).It would require 8 such units to function as one byte.
  7. I picked up an HK430 today at a garage sale. I haven't fired it up yet but it is a nice clean looking unit and the price was such that if it is a dud it will be no big deal. I was suprised at how heavy that puppy is! In any event I will give a spin this weekend sometime. I haven't decided what to do with it yet as I don't really need it but should I decide to flip it I will give the forum folks first dibs.
  8. Nice site but too damned big! As an advertising vehicle the VERY long download time will chase away all but the most dedicated iPod freaks ( who would likely not need a lot of encouragement once the word gets out anyway ). I suggest that perhaps a much faster loading site that hits the high points and features a link to the full featured site would have the advantage of catching the attention of slightly less dedicated users ..... some of whom might then become hooked on the concept. Nice site nonetheless.
  9. Amy Your picture stunned me! You little Beggars are taking over the world. AKA Great looking kid....Congratulations!
  10. Montana, where men are men and sheep are lying little tramps. That is funny as 'ell
  11. Actually they look pretty nice to me. The mods would not fit with my decor but if one had the right decor they would fit nicely. The grill treatments do not appear to be a serious hindrance to the sound distribution. That "eccentric" covering might well provide a Khorn lover an opportunity to buy a pair of Khorns below current market values.
  12. Cash Converters on 32 Ave NE have a pair of Skyline speakers with a price of $1249.99 in their showroom. The label on the rear of the speakers identifies them as Denmark Skyline Digital 2003. This is one of the many White Van ripoff speakers and are worthless. Just a heads up! For more info do a Google search for White Van Speakers.
  13. "It's not enough that the idiot non-English-speaking employees (sorry) at the 'shipping' stores think a few poly peanuts will keep a 70 pound speaker secure until it crosses this great country of ours" You have enlightened me! I now understand that every English speaking idiot I encounter is merely some sort of furriner who has somehow managed to learn English and speak it with no obvious heathen accent! Clever these non-Americans! Did it ever occur to you that attitudes like yours go a long way toward explaining the hostility that so many people have toward America and Americans?BTW the ( sorry ) in your comment doesn't cut any ice! Bummer about the speakers! While it is clear that the speakers were inadequately packed,I rather doubt that they would have escaped unscathed even if well packed. They look like they were run over by the truck(s)instead of transported in them.
  14. To simplify things a tad: These days the term driver typically refers to an entire loudspeaker which is designed to reproduce a specific range of frequencies. Thus the bass driver will be a cone type loudspeaker designed to reproduce the lowest frequencies. A midrange driver will be a cone type unit designed to reproduce the midrange frequencies and a tweeter driver will be designed to reproduce the highest frequencies. When is describing a horn type system the term driver has a similar but slightly different meaning. Horns are designed to amplify and direct any acoustic output fed to them. Thus in a Klipschorn the 15" cone type woofer's output is coupled to a folded horn which amplifies the output of the woofer ( ie drives ) the bass bin. The midrange driver's output is amplified by the mid horn and the tweeter's output is amplified by the tweeter horn. In conventional direct radiating systems the output from the woofer, midrange and tweeter are radiated directly from the individual speaker components to the listener. In horn loaded systems the drivers provide an acoustic signal that is amplified by the horns to provide the final output that is heard by the listener.Due to the amplification provided by the horns these drivers are attached to it is possible to generate higher levels of sound output for a given amount of electrical input. This is another way of saying that horn loaded systems are more efficient than direct radiating systems. Hope I haven't muddied the waters!
  15. About 3 years ago I paid C$2000 for a pair of C's which were in poor condition cosmetically but fine as for the components. At the time I estimated I got them for about C$250 under market. The B's are aesthetically more pleasing than the C but the components are the same.
  16. All models of Khorns from that time are identical with regard to the drivers and crossover networks employed and the construction of the bass horn. In other words the differences are purely a matter of appearence,( ie. cosmetics ) The differences as mentioned above are purely cosmetic. The "B" models have a "riser" inserted between the bass bin and the midrange/tweeter 'TOP HAT' which does look a little nicer than the "C" and Klipch offered a wider range of finishes and veneers for their top end units which makes sense from an aesthetic point of view. A pair of Khorns even when snugged into corners are an imposing sight...tending to draw attention to themslves even at rest. Therefore the nicer they look the better given their size. B&C have already been discussed above. I have never seen or heard of a Model A Khorn but have encountered a model "D" which is simply a Khorn without any finish and without side panels for either the bass bin or the "Top Hat" These were sold primarily as Decorator units in which case the Interior Designer for a home would paint or otherwise finish them to suit the design scheme for the home. Khorns have often been used as behind the screen ( or if some of the pro's prefer behind the screed ). They were usually Decorator models painted in flat black
  17. I have noticed a high end TT in Dr. House's office in the TV series House. There is never a shot from the right angle for a positive ID but it looks as if it might be a Rega or perhaps a Linn. Any ideas Folks?
  18. I for one would never purchase any audio component based on its specs. It is all about what the component sounds like and in my experience the sound produced by a component is essentially independent of the published specs. Some components with great specs sound great but not all. OTH components with lesser published specs sound as good or better than the wunderkind. You need to trust your ears because they are the most accurate device available for determining how any component will sound to you. If I am considering a component that I cannot audition I will research the beejesus out of it by reading reviews ( positive and negative ) and will not buy unless I am satisfied that I can get a free home trial from a dealer or at the very least ( If buying a used piece) I can realistically hope to recover most of my cost in a resale situation.
  19. PWK was obviously as intimately acquainted with Murphy as I am. As a computer tech who spends about 90% of his time repairing laptops,I loved his comments about screws, access covers, leftover parts and gaskets! Just the other day I was reassembling an unfamiliar model,( As a favour for another technician who had to book off suddenly due to a family emergency ) that he had torn down and was just about to drive in the last couple of screws when my hand brushed against something hidden under an anti-static bag on the bench. I lifted the bag out of the way and discovered an additional part. I consulted the ( essentially useless service manual ), and discovered that the part belonged on the underside of the systemboard and had to tear the %$#@&^% thing all the way back down to install it. The teardown was a 30 minute job and the installation of the wayward part was a 15 second job once I got there! I then spent another 45 minutes redoing what I had previously done. Thus what should have been a 30 minute "quick and dirty" turned into 2 hour horror. Naturally I was already up to my hips when I volunteered to bail him out ( on the presumption that it would be a 20-30 minute fix ) and wound up having to put in an hour of unpaid overtime in order to get back to where I had been at the beginning of the day. Murphy I hate you!
  20. I was told that you are a wit. I now see that that was only half right. Oh my what a comeback! Sorry but I refuse to engage in a duel of wits with an unarmed man. Dorothy Parker and Hedda Hopper intensely disliked each other. One evening they arrived at a door at the same moment. Hedda grabbed the door and swung it wide: Age before beauty my dear! Parker swept by saying Pearls before Swine! He's so stupid that he thinks that he needs to wear a condominium for safe sex! That boy's so ugly that he couldn't score in a cathouse.
  21. Cool! Another 31 controls to play with
  22. Bull! It ain't perfect because I cannot afford it! AKA-- Everything I have read about it says that it is one damned fine piece of equipment. I would buy one sight unseen if I had the $$. That is based not only on the reviews but also on Mark Deneen's history and reputation.
