  1. I would rather have a great sounding amp than buy one just because of one measurement.
  2. Some of the drivers may be JBL, but it definitely has a homemade look. GLWS Leo. You are a good sport.
  3. OB speakers can be very good. The ones I have heard aren’t as good as the best of what horns do. That said, I would love to hear a pair of Pure Audio Project speakers with the horn midrange driver. That might prove to be the best of both worlds.
  4. Pretty sure that review is the AL5. I don't think they ever reviewed the original lascala. Sam Tellig did a write up of the LS II.
  5. I will try this on my lascalas to see if I hear it too. If I do hear it, it doesn't mean there is resonance in lascalas. It could be the recording itself. It would be more telling if someone hears it on a different speaker. What percentage of recordings do you experience this with? 5%? 10%?
  6. Contrary to conventional wisdom on this site, amplifiers do NOT sound the same. And buying a cheap receiver at a big box store will bear that out more than anything I can tell you. But let's hope you make the smart decision not to do such a thing. Lascalas and tubes go together like bees and honey. Please state what your budget is and what you consider "modern conveniences" and someone here might be able to recommend a tube amp for you.
  7. Qobuz just sounds fuller and more natural than Tidal. But none of it can replace the goodness of my record spinner.
  8. Posting under the influence isn’t a good look for you……
  9. I've used Tidal but have found that the SQ of Qobuz is better. At one time Tidal had the better library, but I think Qobuz has caught up now.
  10. I beg to differ on this. I've spent time with the earlier LS and I'd say the improvement wrought by the II version is not subtle. It sounds better in almost every aspect.
  11. https://www.hattor.com/dualmono_preamp_the_big.html One of these.
  12. Just my opinion. The AL5 is the most improved LaScala, as it should be. I haven’t seen any mention of cabinet resonance in this version. I would say if this is something that bothers you, maybe it’s time to move on. It’s one thing to modify a 40 yr old speaker to suit your needs, but a brand new speaker will quickly lose any reasonable resale value after mods. If you can do something that is reversible and doesn’t show afterwards, maybe. Again, just my opinion.
  13. I see you didn’t answer my question to you regarding different amplifiers.
  14. It’s not the question that’s restrictive, but the reception.
  15. I have found that some amplifiers can induce a resonance in the upper bass. I had a Sonic Frontiers Power 2 tube amp years ago that did just that. As soon as I got rid of that amp, the problem disappeared entirely. Not saying that this is your issue, but have you heard it on more than one amp?
  16. Sometimes I think I hear something, but it’s very benign. I know it’s greatly improved over earlier versions. It’s not enough for me to worry about and I just enjoy the music.

    Jokes?

When I grew up, we always thought people who pronounced it the “other way” were uppity, lol…..

    Jokes?

Aahh, so you do know… I say that because I’m from there and that’s all anyone ever called them.

They are if you grew up in Georgia…..
  20. I don’t give two sh&ts about how an amp measures. If it sounds good and gets my toes tappin, that’s all I need to know. And yes, nine times out of ten, that’s a tube amp.
  21. They cleaned up nice. And yes, you are on the right track. Vinyl and tubes sound glorious through lascalas.
  22. It really sucks to be in such a situation, but I suppose you have to make the best of it. Good luck with whatever you decide.
