  1. adcom gfa 555ii amp- sold locally. .
  2. i dont doubt that at all. but the fact still remains that replacing the old/cheap stock caps with even entry level poly caps will be the biggest improvement for the average speaker/system.
  3. glad to see you went with reasonable priced caps & found they sound very good.
  4. for your speakers there would be little to no gain in performance from doing a recap vs the built units. if you can solder you can just recap them. & you can use many other brands of caps that will sound just as good, they dont need to be 2-3 times the size of the stock caps. myself & many others have said before, the main benefit of recapping is replacing the cheap & old stock caps with new & better materials, you will hear improvements even with dayton type caps that cost a few bucks a piece. but by all means if you can afford the more expensive caps then more power to you, just dont get hung up thinking you have to use one certain brand or pay more than necessary.
  5. "incorrect" means incorrect surrounds, i stated they will work as the above thread confirmed. the point is why would you pay $200 + shipping to get incorrect looking passives when he already has one good one... if he has the frame of the other one its like $75 to recone it or ive seen them for $50-$75 used in good shape. seems like a no brainer to me... & they stay original.
  6. like i said, makes no sense to pay more for 2 incorrect passives when all he has to do is recone 1 or buy a single used one & keep them in correct stock form. wasn't trying to argue with your suggestion, just stating a more logical & cheaper way to resolve it.
  7. LOL. i've owned 4 pairs of these 5.5's & one set came with a spare grille... have since sold all the KG's & forgot i had this. i see the badges sell for as much or more than im asking for the whole grille!
  8. they may work but would look funny with mismatched surrounds. some guys might not care about that but most do & come re-sale time you have to explain why they dont match. with used ones available & a correct recone kit so cheap i suggest keeping them matched to the originals.
  9. you attached chorus 2 to the wall? probably not the best positioning for them... the rear passive needs a little room to breather, usually at least 8" from the back wall. & for best bass they should be in or close to a corner but at least a foot or so from the side walls.
  10. new ones from klipsch are not the same as the older ones, they have a rubber surround, not the accordian fabric. best option is have them reconed by simply speakers or buy the kit & do it yourself... or search here & ebay for a used one in good shape.
  11. i agree putting them on stands helps the midrange... but what you gain in midrange you lose in bass. depending on seating location you may not need them raised 40." you can also do the heresy trick & tilt them back a bit to get the same benefit as raising them. the loss of bass when rasied outweighs the slight gain in mids IMO.
  12. all that with stock crossovers? how is that possible?? supports the theory that not all stock x-overs are "bad" or need replacing. listen for awhile then make some changes/upgrades down the road if you think you need to, start with titanuim tweeter diaphrams & see if you like them. then consider changing the capacitors, your choice on what brand you buy but again, the main improvement would be replacing the stock klipsch caps that probably cost 5 cents ea with some decent caps that are a few bucks a piece. happy listening!
  13. maybe i overlooked the CL link... but i dont think it was there when i initially read the post. i see it now though, thanks. definitely get them for that price, surprised they are still listed. you can sell the kg4 for almost that much & do an even upgrade.
  14. nice looking speakers, good luck with the sale. but, the mention of cf1s listed for $550 ea has no relavance to your speakers at all... lots of morons list things for way more than they are worth on that acution site... they will not sell & do not have anything to do with other speakers value. just sayin.
  15. SVS offeres or offered passive subs, mainly the tall cylinder versions. if they dont have a current model passive, they are out there on the used market. ive seen other brands over the years from the klipsch KG passive to cerwin vega & a few others. if you have good amplification they are pretty decent.
  16. i vote for the quartets too, much better speaker all around than the kg4. where are you guys seeing a price for the quartets? he must have edited the ad becuase no price is mentioned for the quartets...

call around to some local furniture shops you might be surprised how cheap it would be to refinish them if the veneer isnt in too bad of shape. i had a pair of walnut lacquer k-horns that had lots of scratches in them that i was going to refinish myself but thought id check prices for having them done professionally... they estimated about $150 each to sand & relacquer them & one or 2 deep scratches they would "repair" but wouldnt be a perfect match. to reveneer just the big front bass bin board would have been about $300-$400 for the pair, the tops & sides didnt need new veneer. these are midwest prices, might be more or less in your area. so, for chorus to reveneer or refinish i bet it would be pretty cheap. also if they are black & you want to keep them black, its very cheap & easy to paint them.
  18. definitive technology pf1500, doing great since 1996. & if the amp or woofer dies, def tech will likely replace it for free! best customer service in the business!
  19. you're in a long line of others looking too... & only V1? why not V2 or even V3? they all sound great!
  20. when does the crackling happen? on loud bass heavy music or at any volume with normal music? if its on bass heavy music it could be the cabinet vibrating, but usually epics dont have that problem. could also be a partially blown woofer, gently push in on the woofer with your fingers centered around the dust cap, not on the dust cap, & see if there is a "scratchy" feeling. also gently tap on the dust cap to see if it makes a noise. it could be a crossover issue but that is unlikely, ive never heard a crossover cause a crackling issue, usually bad capacitors just make the mids & highs sound muddy or muffled. if the mids & highs are still crisp & clean the x-overs are probably fine, for now.
  21. crackling can be a partially blown woofer as well. ive had woofers still work but a "scratchy" feeling when pushed in by hand, then at higher volumes or bass heavy music they would crackle &/or pop. a loose dust cap you can sometimes feel by hand when tapping on the cap.
  22. not sure what youre offering but i sent you a PM.
