  1. Some of the shrill can be toned down from the treble side of the receiver. How are the speakers set up in the room? Are they toed in or just facing the back walls? Are you setting the receiver up as a 2 channel set up or surround? That is going to make a difference with sound field. For future reference, usually a receiver of any brand that is refurbished is sent back to the company and fixed, then put back out for sale, but even having said that can have issues afterwards. That was one of the biggest reasons I stated that issue with Onkyo, even after they fix their HDMI Boards they blow again. Try your friends Yamaha with the seating set up in the room and see how that sounds, as I stated, you can get an RX-A1**0 Series and they come with 110 watts per channel @8ohms.If the 473 sounded good, then the RX-A should sound better as they have better internal amps and components. The Marantz SR5 Series is going to have 90 watts and similar build to the Denon as they are the same company . The 6 series would be the better option as it is a step above the 5 series, and 1 below the top of the line set up for the 7.2 set up.You'll also get more wattage. A good rule of thumb would be wattage ratings are never accurate, but should be in the range of 70-80% of stated value on good receivers.
  2. You are not going to get a different sound with any receiver from listening on a bed that is a foot or so off the ground. Your other posts are giving the same responses. If you look at your own posts and the responses to them, everyone is offering the same advice. You either need to move the speakers to the side walls facing your ears, or get a chair or something else to sit in to bring your ear height closer to the height of the speakers tweeters,as that's where most of the voice is going to be coming from, and it will always sound bright or tinnny. Go to your friends house and listen to them there in the same manner you listen to yours now and you will see they sound similar. You also stated in your other posts you only have miniblinds and no curtains or wall treatments,so you are going to continue having a tinny sound.Try to get some curtains for the windows,or get some wall treatments (can make yourself),and consider getting a set of bookshelf speakers and bringing them down to your level until you get other furniture for the 82's.
  3. The problem is,and I'm speaking from personal experience, is that we go into these big box stores not being educated and wind up buying things from uneducated sales people. Up until a month ago, I did this and since I joined this forum have learned a lot. I definitely would have done things differently in my family room on the speakers I did purchase, and would have probably purchased an older model speaker as I did with my Reference line I have set up in my living room.Maybe would have done Heresy HT system.
  4. I have been taking my kids to concerts since they were 4-5 years old. Santana does not do anything inappropriate except the smoking. I have taken my kids to see the B-52'S, Bon Jovi, Linkin Park, 30 Seconds to Mars, Social Distortion, Brian Setzer Orchestra, Maroon 5, takling them to see Black Veil Brides in February and a few more. It is going to be subjective to what we as parents deem O.K. I would never let them go by themselves, not until they were older teens, but with me, no problem. My son and daughter had a guitar pick and a drum stick handed to them as we were in the front row by a few performers. We also met the B-52's and talked with them for about a half hour. So it's been a very good thing for them and has opened their minds to different music, all 4 of my kids play musical instruments, my 10 year old drums, my 13 year old triplets (2 girls and 1 boy) play multiple instruments with my 1 daughter playing the violin, keyboard, ukulele, and guitar and my other one playing violin, flute, and sax. Both girls are in choir also. My other boy plays sax also, and if not for the music and seeing it live don't think they'd be as involved in it.
  5. The satellite companies have come a long way and in my area, there are very infrequent losses of signal when inclement weather, except for DISH Network, they still have issues. I am forced to have cable as DIRECTV won't give me a signal due to the trees that are in the way of where I am at.My house faces the opposite way the dish needs to be and because of the back yard I have 3 trees that are about 50-60 feet high so the dish can't hit where it needs to hit for a signal.
  6. Depending on your provider, there are 2 channels that will give you up to the minute reports on all games, albeit not being able to watch each one, and then when someone is in the red zone and getting ready to score. It's NFL Redzone and does every game that's on that day up until 7PM. I have started watching that more than watching the games instead, although I do go back and forth on this and the games that are in my area.
  7. Look at the responses on your prior posts on receivers, you will get the 110 watts per channel in 8 ohms from either one of them. Both receivers are the 2nd to top of those lines for their ratings, the next is the x-4100 or the 7008, so either of them should suffice. If doing that and having had the RX-V573, look at the RX-A1040 series or a prior series in the RX-A1**0 series for comparison. But I would still stay away from the Onkyo due to HDMI Issues, it looks as if they are still having the issues with them. The Denon and Marantz are going to be very similar as they are owned by the same company and at this level for interior parts, there may not be much of a difference, although the Marantz gets weighed heavier with the better parts internally to a certain point, then they are almost identical internally when comparing models. I am not 100% sure on the models you are asking about, but they will have some similarities to them.It will come down to different chips and resistors for the most part.At least that's what Denon and Marantz told me on the phone.
  8. I agree,if using a mattress to lay on with it being a few inches off the floor will not settle the issue. If that is the case, get a set of bookshelf speakers and place them on the floor or on a small stand or book, that will get rid of the issue as the speakers are going to be almost 3 feet higher than your ears and acoustics from laying down are going to be different than sitting up. Then only way you can get rid of some of the brightness is to bring the treble settings down on the receiver. The sound is going to bounce off of everything and being it's above you, will always sound off. Also, move the speakers to the sides of your listening area instead of in front of you. That may be a better sound field for you. No matter what you do,unless you have a dedicated seating arrangement, you are going to incur problems with the sound field.
  9. If you set up with Audessey and don't have a tripod, try setting up the mic at the back of the couch or chair.Worst case you still get ear height.Just move any pillows or cushions out of the way so it's a clear path. And you can also just adjust the bass and treble afterwards and see which sounds better. Once the set up is saved you can go back and forth with having the EQ on and off.
  10. I have the same receiver and have it hooked up 9.2. What the 7.2 is meaning is that internally the receiver will do that, anything else will need an external amp,and hooked up 9.2, you can still run a 2nd 2 channel zone. If I'm not mistaken, you can also run a 2nd video source.I haven't gotten into all the bells and whistles on mine yet, and probably never will.
  11. I am also a newbie, and what I was saying as I have all 3 receivers, Denon, Marantz, and Yamaha and that in my opinion the Marantz is the warmest of the 3 and focuses more with voice recognition than Yamaha which I feel focuses more on music and therefore has a more brighter sound. One of the replies were that none of them were warm sounding as they are AVR's but every receiver is going to have a different sound. All 3 are SS, so there isn't going to be a tube like sound but there will be differences with brightness and warmth. I also recommended he get a Yamaha if he liked the sound of his friends as it was in my opinion a warmer sound than the Denon, but not as warm as the Marantz.
  12. I realize this is a subjective opinion but that is a pretty intricate detail field you have them divided especially when you consider all of the parameters that can be manipulated in the various AVRs, not to mention speakers being used (and different room acoustics). That's why I stated "at least that's what I get from it". It is always going to be subjective isn't it? And I have actually used 2 of the 3 AVR's in both my living room and family room, with same speakers, and same parameters overall. My Yamaha was supposed to be for the living room, but was to large for the stand, so it's in my family room, and my Denon was supposed to be in the family room, but is in the living room as it fits in the stand I use. I've also used all 3 sets of speakers in my set ups as my KSB's were bought in 1998 and are still being used today. So they have been used with all of my receivers at one point or another. My RF's were also in both my family room and living room at one point and wound up staying in the living room to match up power wise with the receiver, and the Yamaha wound up powering the other speakers. Had I not joined this forum, and received the help I have received,I most likely would have still been mixing and matching non timbre matching speakers.Between the help on here and calling Klispch, Yamaha, and Denon almost daily,I have learned a few things and am starting to enjoy what I have been learning. The biggest lesson has been everything is subjective to our own ears. I in no way also know what the 82's sound like as I don't have them nor have never heard them. I am going by what I do have.
  13. Typically yes, as stated above, they are owned by the same company and the lower ended models Denon will not sound as good or warm as Marantz as the better quality stuff goes into the Marantz name 1st. Marantz has the warmer sound overall in my opinion and once you get to the upper ended models they do sound more alike as they use almost all of the same innards as per my phone conversations with Denon and Marantz. I have all 3 receiver's I named and as per warmness it's Marantz,Denon, and Yamaha. As for a fuller sound field with music,it's Yamaha,Denon,Marantz in my opinion. I've said Marantz focuses more on voice when listening to music and Yamaha focusing more on instruments with Denon in the middle. At least that's what I get from it.
  14. If you liked your friends Yamaha, why not try one at your place? For $500.00, you could get a nice unit online. Most of the lower YAMAHA models are going to give you 90 watts per channel and may not have the option of hooking up an amp externally, but you could get something from the AVENTAGE line that will have more power, and can add in an external amp. I personally like the Yamahas as they give a wider fuller sound field to me than Denon, with Denon giving more sound quality towards voice in my opinion. You could also upgrade to the 3000 as it will give you a little more power and amenities. Also, speaker placement may help. Try moving them around or toeing them in so the tweeters either meet at your ears or just outside of them.Think Triangle with the speakers being points and your sitting position as another point.Curtains may also help a little. I've owned Yamahas mostly, starting with the RX-V2095 and then with the newer models being the RX-V 573,575,675, and now the RX-A2020.If you are looking for a model to hook up and external amp, look at the RX-V 7 SERIES as they are the top of the RX line, then would be the RX-A 8 series and up.Their set up system isn't as involved as Audyssey, but works fine to give a starting point. I've only had issues on sound when the speakers were rated much more than the output power where the receiver has to work to hard to power the speakers at high levels. Once I upped the power output, things got substantially better and when I played with placement, even better.Quick reference point should be your seating area should be about the same distance as the width of the speakers for a starting point if possible. If going the route of the Denon again, try the X-3000, or if you can stretch the X-4000. They are both discontinued models, but have more capabilities then the X-2000.

    Onkyo 727

Hence the HDMI Issues, they burn em up. If you do get it, I'd get an external fan to keep it cool. I did that with one of mine before getting rid of it.
  16. No Mark, I haven't been on the site, will check it out now, Thanks! . Do you know where they are located? Thanks for the info! I am exploring a few options,I may do a near field set up which I'm leaning more towards, but am open to other suggestions. I am so new to this whole thing even with using an amp as I always had a single AVR and connected my components and never used external amps. I can say I was blown away at the sound field and overall warmth of everything listening to the tube amp and when they switched to SS heard the difference immediately. I brought 6 of my own cd's from techno, rock, heavy metal, swing, and Chris Isaak and everyone of them sounded like a new cd to me with how the sooundfield was expanded.

    Onkyo 727

I'd stay away due to HDMI issues with the Onkyo's.Even the so called new models are having issues with them. Is it a refurb?
  18. does the receiver have an outlet in the back of it? If so,try plugging it in there. If not,it may be the sub that has an issue with detecting it. If you have a power conditioner, you can always turn that block of it off.
  19. Fords are known for the trannies going bad, had 1 go bad on me. It will get progressively worse over time. Changing the fluid may make it worse as the old fluid may be "holding together" what is working. If it's not burning I would leave it alone as far as changing it, but it will progressively get worse. It may only be that gear, but it will continue. If you have a guy you trust have him look at it and then take it to 2 or 3 others to see what they say. Almost everyone in my area has stopped working on them and sends them out, so I am limited on things when that happens here. What I wound up doing on mine was buying a used one from a junk yard an having it installed,as rebuilding was 3 times the cost. I got another 18 months out of my vehicle doing that.
  20. It will be fine, just hook it up to the L/R speakers of the receiver and hook the speakers to the amp.
  21. I'm probably the last person who should add my 0.02, but shouldn't the comparison be made for a like built speaker to decide which one is better. 2 totally different build styles, different crossovers, cabinets, and everything else. One is a 3 way and 1 is a 2 way aren't they? Wouldn't the better comparison be between like a JBL and a comparable Klipsch? i would think it's like comparing apples to oranges, and the applications of the speakers that would matter most, and then what the speakers are made of when comparing. Maybe if the crossovers were same on them, maybe if made from same components, and cabinetry identical in materials used to make you could have a better discussion on them, but that's just me............Just take it easy on me when beating me up for my comments.
  22. I did my 4000 set up as a 9.2 set up and an external amp to power my front wides as I couldn't do rear surrounds unless in the ceiling and with that there's only about 18 inches behind me. My side surrounds are about 6 feet off the ground and front heights 7 feet with wides about 4.5 feet.Atmos to me from what I've heard at the big box stores is not much better and by the time everything catches up,will be a waste in my opinion.
  23. with the brick you don't have many options, I would just get these little clamps that are double sided tape and then paint over them and the wire with the same color on the walls.Or drop them down lower and wider on stands. I had an old loft apartment that was brick and did that with mine back in the 90's. Love the rug also, had mine in brown and white.

    I need a new TV

I also have a Vizio 55" 3d smart tv. You can definitely see the blacks and greys not being that crisp at all times, but it is also not a bad tv.it beats the one I replaced which was a 61 inch Sony rear projection that I had since 1997 up until a year ago. Even my 9 year old son said at the time dad we need a new TV.
