Mike Whell's Special edition Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon EMI vinyl Lp / Grado Gold /BlueBerry/ VRD setup was a very inspired replay of this classic. I am not sure what speakers were playing at the time I was having so much fun. Mike; Please let me know exactly what version that was so i can put it on my Christmas list. ---------------- Rick: It was an EMI Records release in 2003. It's pressed on 180 g vinyl. I'm not sure if this number is indicative of anything, but it could be the ID number of the disk: SHVL 804. Anyway, shouldn't be to hard to find. I bought my copy at Flat Black and Circular in our favorite city: East Lansing.
  2. For those not able to attend, you missed some great tunes played on some great gear. We were a small, but mighty, group, and it was a great time. Each of us brought gear to share - NOS Valves brought his tube amps, a Sony 333 ES SACD, and a Juicy Music pre. Shapeshifter brought his Heresies, and an awesome Jolida tube CD player. Our host had his Choruses, turntable, DAC and Upsampler, and as I was leaving, he and Craig were pulling out the vintage Scott tube gear. And thanks to our host for helping me haul over my RF-7's. I have to say that my RF-7's have never sounded that good in my house! Craig's amps are worth every penny of whatever he charges for them! I have to think that the Juicy Music pre also played a significant role in the purity of the sound. Great stuff! Thanks for Flynn for hosting, and it was great seeing everyone!

Shape indicated he may bring his tube cd player. We can do the SACD vs vinyl of Heavy Weather by Weather Report that Craig and I have done in the past. That seems complicated enough. Inventory of Monte Cristo no. 4 cigars stands at 5. One each reserved for Craig, WHell and Shape. That leaves 2 for the first 2 posters that post their attendance; I already smoked one this week. ---------------- Since I am a tobacco lightweight, I will offer my Monte Cristo to another attendee who can truly approciate it.

I say go with a seperate source...A less costly option would be an intergrated amp with phono or older receiver. Best option is to go with a complete separate 2 channel system for the TT. Sorry, but I just don't feel that receiver will do the guality TT and a good phono stage justice. ---------------- While I don't disagree you about an A/V receiver being the last word in resolution, I'm not sure that my first suggestion for a vinyl newbie would be to go out an by a new system just to listen to vinyl. Vinyl is an acquired taste for many, and some get into the hobby and find out that they can't stand cleaning, flipping the record, storage requirements, etc. I suggest anyone getting into vinyl do so slowly, so they're able to scale up if they decide they like it.
  5. Another option might be to find a reasonably priced vintage preamp that has a phono stage built in, and use that. Run the TT into the phono inputs of the preamp, and then the output of the preamp into one of the analog inputs on your Pioneer. I'm not advocating that you purchase this particlar unit, but its a good example of what I'm talking about: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=14974&item=5722835856&rd=1
  6. http://buy.audiogon.com/cgia/fsb.pl?preaphon&1&ctg&st1 Here's a place to keep your eye on for a decent deal on a used phono stage. There's a Clear Audio trade in on the list for $199 that might fit the bill. In any case, don't purchase a great TT like the Music Hall, only to have the phono stage be the weak link. You'll never be able to appreciate what the TT is truly capable of.
  7. Guys - looks like the RF-7's will be joining the party. Rick, I'll PM you with my phone number so we can figure out the logistics. BTW, thanks for the restaurant suggestions. Ernesto's has seen us several times in recent years for previous aniversaries, and is an old stand by for us, too. Not quite the same since Chef Ernie passed away a few years ago, but a old favorite none the less. We're actually going to head for La Dolce Vita in Detroit. It has great food, and the "right" atmosphere for a romanitic evening. Pretty good jazz vocalist performing that night as well.
  8. Me too, but here's the scenario. October 1 (this Friday) is our 10th wedding aniversary. We're awaiting to hear from Grandma if she can watch our daughter Friday or Saturday. Laurie and I would both much rather go out Friday, our actual aniversary day, but if Grandma can't do Friday, I might have a tough time selling the wife on the idea that hanging out with a bunch of like minded Klipsch geeks is preferable to celebrating our 10th! We'll confirm by tomorrow, and I'll let y'all know.

I'll know by tomorrow if I can make it over, and if I'm coming the RF-7's can come too. Flynn: If you can help me move them, that would be GREAT!
  10. Keep thinking, Max. It might spark some something new. Though I'm starting to detect an underCURRENT that folks are getting tired of this thread.
  11. You're Apex might be like my older NAD T-550 DVD player. Consult your owners' manual to confirm this, but: - my NAD's internal D/A converter will decode the Dolby Digital 5.1 information on a DVD, and pass it through the 5.1 analog outputs on the back of the player to the 5.1 analog inputs on my reciever. The NAD's internal D/A converter is not designed to decode the DTS soundtrack on a DVD. However; - my NAD will read the DIGITAL output of both the Dolby Digital and DTS soundtracks of any DVD source material, and send them through to my receiver, via TOS Link or Digital Coax cable from the NAD's digital output to the receiver's digital input. I drop the DTS encoded disk into the NAD, select the DTS soundtrack from the DVD's menu (most DVD movies, etc. default to the Dolby Digital soundtrack, so you must call up the movie's menu and select the DTS soundtrack), and then make sure my DTS capable receiver is set to auto select, so it will automatically detect and decode the DTS digital signal coming from the DVD player. Most of today's HT receivers, including your Denon if I'm not mistaken, will automatically detect the type of digital signal (DTS, Dolby Digital, etc.) and decode it. Hope this helps.
  12. IF my wife will let me loose for a couple of hours, and IF I can get some help moving them around, I'll bring over my RF-7's.
  13. If a remote is not essential, I'd see if I could find a good condition 1970's Marantz or Harman Kardon receiver. many here favor the HK X30 line: 430, 630, 730 and 930, especially with Heritage Klipsch. If the remote is a must, Rotel makes some nice 2 channel pieces. By the way, IMHO, no reason in the world that you need to buy a receiver new, especially if its 2 channel. Plenty of great deals out there in the used market that will stretch you dollar and get you a really nice unit.
  14. Found this at a garage sale today, and picked it up for $1.00. The album jacket and liner notes are in MINT condition. The vinyl appears to be in somewhere between VG and VG+. This is the mono version on Limelight records (LM82010). I'm slowly becoming a Peterson fan, and have 5 of his albums on vinyl. Have heard about this album before, but haven't seen one on vinyl until now. Don't want to play this one until I have a good way to clean it. Does anyone else have this one? What can you tell me about the performance and the relative value of this particular specimen? Thanks!
  15. You could find an HK 430 in good shape for $50. If you wanted to go really crazy, you could find a competent audio/electronic tech - several here and on other forums - who might be willing to swap out the old capacitors in it for more modern ones, check/set the bias and the DC offset on the amp, make sure the tuner is correctly aligned, etc. Then you'd have one killer little receiver, and likely have some of your $300 left over to go buy new music.
  16. Thanks. I've reported this to FedEx's Security Dept.
  17. I'm such a trusting soul sometimes. I placed my Marantz HT receiver on a number of different internet classified boards, as I am looking to go exclusively back to two channel. A couple months have gone by and no interest shown, until a week and a half ago. I received an email from a gentleman who identified himself as Robert Olson, an sound engineer in Vancouver, who had a client who was interested in acquiring a receiver like mine. He described a somewhat unusual set of circumstances where a sale fell through on another receiver he had purchased, but he already sent payment to the seller. He stated that the seller agreed to resend payment to me, and then I would forward my receiver to him when payment was received. Since his last deal was for a receiver that cost more than mine, I was to wire him the balance via Western Union. Well, a Cashier's Check showed up here yesterday, drawn on St Martin Bank and Trust, in St Martinville, Louisiana. I must say that I've felt a little funny about this deal, so I located the number for the back, and called to see if they could verify the validity of the check. They asked me to fax a copy over so they could authenticate the check. Well, you guessed it: I received the bank's response, and they stated that the check was not valid. Of course, the check amount was for $4500, of which I was to "keep" $1200, and send to the "buyer" the balance: $3300. So, I'm guessing the aim of this scam was to get both a receiver, plus a nice chunk of $$$$ from me. None of what I received came though the U.S. Mail, so mail fraud is not an option. The check came through FedEx, and I can certainly let them know. Not sure though if they are interested in pursuing this since they did not incur an losses. Meanwhile, I'm P.O.'d, but I'm a bit relieved that I dodged a bullet here. There truly are some real scumbags out there. I'm sharing this here to serve as a warning for you. Some of you have been screwed as buyers, receiving junk in return for send your hard earned cash to an unscrupulous seller. Here's a case where an unsuspecting seller could have gotten ripped off.
  18. ---------------- WAF It has been my experience that smaller objects in the home have more of an appeal for women than larger ones (We are talking speakers) ---------------- I'll bet there were a few folks in there that were breathing a sigh of relief until you put the "We're talking speakers" disclaimer in there!
  19. Frankly, I think that the extra $$$ is not worth it, unless you just want the TOTL Klipsch in the house. I own both the RF-3 (downstairs) and the RF-7 (main floor). Both systems see two channel and HT duty. If your main focus is HT, the center channel gets primary duty, getting most of the program material from any DVD, and you've already got the TOTL center channel in the RC-7. The RF-3's are fine speakers in their own right, & voice match just fine with the RC-7. The only reason I'd want to trade up to an RF-7, much less the RB-75, is if my system saw as much or more duty as a 2 channel set up. And if that were the case, I'd save my money and opt for the RF-7's over the RB-75's. Even with that said, I'm quite satisified with the performance of my RF-3's. The only reason I picked up the RF-7's is that I decided to build a 2nd system downstairs, and came across a pair of RF-7's locally for $1400 used, but only used for about 3 months, and I got boxes, manuals, etc.

  22. A question like this is always interesting, because you're likely to get as many product recomendations as there are amp manufacturers. You might do a search on some of the various manufacturer names in this forum, and you'll be able to get a good cross section of opinion on the products of those manufacturers. Frequently recommended amps that you might search on are: Adcom Rotel NAD B&K Monarchy I happen to own all of the original Adcom GFA 500 series (535, 545, 555), and I love what they do for my system. As with my or anyone's suggestions, your milage may vary. Be prepared to audition any amp before buying, to be sure you're buying a product that meets your objectives.
  23. Something tells me they'll sound like dodo at any crossed over at ANY point.
