  1. See what happens when you never get out of the sub forum? Your about 2 weeks too late on this question;-) Look around for any post over 20 pages within the last month or so.
  2. I've had plenty of original factory boxes that I'd say were totally inadequate - Devore speakers is the 1st that jumps to mind. A simple single cardboard box, a plastic bag over the speaker and foam inserts for the corners. VERY easy to dent the speaker. Horrible original box. Wavac and PS Audio, on th other hand, had exceptionally factory boxes. Which I threw away.
  3. Heck no. I'm obsessive, but not compulsive : ) Seriously, I keep only the ones from "high-end" products where the box might influence the resale value. If it isn't likely to make me money in the long run, I'm less apt to keep it. When I look at box value vs. square foot value in Chicago + the price I put on having free space not filled with useless boxes, that has got to be a pretty dang special box for me to keep it.
  4. The whole flippin' general forum is OT. You guys can really leave the "OT" off your Subject line!
  5. Couple of these... (be sure he brings his favorite speakers with him though.... we'd want to be sure & have a fair competition! OK - The "baby driving the sleigh" tweak is really creepy.
  6. Hey Marvel, your house looks just like mine!
  7. Yup...8" unit (http://www.phy-hp.com/English/Products/H21lb15_SAG_E.html). No subwoofer. I don't miss the bass, but I'm pretty sure that deep bass heavy music lovers should look elsewhere. The way I see it, why mess up the advantages of a single driver approach with a sub? That would, and this is an acoustic term I learn-ed from Mas, discombobulate the sound. They are what they are (the always applicable metaphysical statement of this young century), and they do what they do very very well. 99.5 percent of the listening on this system is from the tuner - 98.7 WFMT classical and 90.9 WDCB jazz here in Chicago . The sound is very full and very large in this room.
  8. Musical Affairs Crescendos (http://www.musicalaffairs.com). It is a single driver design with an open back cabinet using a very nice phy-hp driver.
  9. SWL - Which Eastern Electric??? This one: http://www.6moons.com/audioreviews/eelectric4/m156.html? If so...cool. Really new amp; the US distributor, Morningstar Audio, doesn't even have it listed on the website. I didn't think anyone in the US outside of the dist. had one yet.
  10. Lordy, that image is not sideways anywhere but on this forum...well...turn your heads.
  11. I use my wife and kids as a bass absorber between the speakers and a special table that reflects only the good sound waves directly in front of the listening position.
  12. Together the 2 pieces are just about 80 lbs. It does use mercury rectifiers - 866 jrs. They definitely do not make those anymore (and you wouldn't want to break them around the kids). I got mine from Brent Jesse who got them from a ham radio swap.
  13. Totally unable to find the apparent mass for this arm - even downloaded the manual and it isnt there. The good news, however, is that it supports cartridges from 7 to 19 grams - so we are covered for most of them. Have a play and see what happens. Max, I will do that...one of these days. The Ortofon came installed on the Thorens TD-124 I picked up a couple years ago (for $200!).So, what are we gonna do about the perfect cart for the SME??? (my SME is currently installed on a Kenwood KD-500, with an Ortofon X5-MC HOMC) I just listed my Shure branded SME 3009 Series II Improved on ePay earlier this evening. I got it from the original owner along with a 124. It had the Shure v15 Type III in the headshell. I also have all of the original Shure and SME documentation and there was a lot of cross-promotion going on. I'll be honest with you, I never listened to the Shure. I have a rare early model 3009 with the split counterweight and use the 103. But for users of the "improved" they might want to seek out the v15 III if a good one is available.
  14. It's like owning a boat. Cool to look at, fun, and stupidly expensive...but not the most convenient thing in the world. No remote and a little touchy. And don't get me started on the internals - Josh is a genius when it comes to metalwork and circuit design, but YIKES! it's a mess in that chassis. A mess of really ungodly expensive parts no less (siltech silver wiring thin as a hair all over, tribute iron etc.). The sound is really great, though. If I had to give a quick and dirty reference, it is a combination of my old Cary Slp98 (with the big tone of those octals) plus the better definition, especially in the bass, of my old BBX. Here's a bad pic of mine. It doesn't look like it, but it is huge...the transformer in the power supply looks like it came off of a fridge. It is the size of a small watermelon.
  15. The irony is that I sold the amp to help fund the purchase of a Peach II from another forum member!
  16. Interesting...I've never heard the Focals, but my guess would have been they are wildly different than the Trios. I HAVE heard the trios as well a several other of the Aventagrds. Hate 'em. My these ears, my Oris horns sounded better and the bass was better integrated. Bear in mind, I got rid of the Oris due to bass integration issues so... In any event, I truly do not see where the money goes with the Avantegards.
  17. The 3009 Series II Improved with the SME removable headshell has an effective mass of 9.5g, about 3g less than the 3009 R and the 3009 Series II.
  18. This place is so crazy lately, I can't tell if you are being sarcastic or not!
