Used to have KG4's and think they sound awesome. Replaced them with Forte's and those required a lot more work to get them as good as the KG4's.  Used them in a small stereo room with KG1.5's in the rear; sounded excellent. :D No clue about the center channel ... had several but never got the sound right ... now using Heresy's as L/R/center on my AVR.

Here (in Florida) you can buy KG4's all day long.  Most people are asking about $400 for them, but don't think they get more than $300.  I am sure prices in Alaska are higher, so probably a decent deal with the center.

    Cheers, Emile

    add-on ... BTW, think the KG4's sound much better than KG5.5's :)

@Emile  &  @carlthess40  With your input and suggestions I've gone & looked at them.  Not bad shape, grills & drivers all look clean and intact, typical glass/cup stain on top of one.  Offered the seller $300 for just the KG4's.  Don't know what I'd do with the KV4, it's a monster of a center channel with dual 8" drivers. May offer $50 for that.  Hoping the KG1's will work as surrounds with the KG4's.  They should look good together anyway.  Will know by tomorrow if he accepts my offer.

In terms of comparison over the past hour with the rebuilt crossovers the Heresy III fills my relatively small living room quite well but the KG1s are no slouch.  The RB-51 II's are a solid last in the scheme of things.  I'll say this - I could live with the KG1s in a pinch given my space but don't tell my wife that. I really like these little speakers.  Quite enjoyable with the Elekit TU-8200 running KT88s over the past hour.

@BadChile  Interesting.  Been looking at the TU-8200DX from tubedepot for awhile now as an entry into the world of tubes.

I have a set and they play as well if not better the. My H1’s if placed right for the passive woofer Great deal for a set of four

Love my Polk SDA's with their front passive radiator & sealed cabinets.  Prefer non ported due to my preference (perhaps just perceived) for a tighter bass.  Been wanting to try Klipsch's rear mounted (drone) PR's. Thought maybe the KG-4's would be a way to get my feet wet with the rear PR's.  Forte's are what I think I really want to end up with.  Just waiting for them to become available at a reasonable price.  How position sensitive are the rear PR Klipsch's such as the KG-4 or Forte's?  I can put the SDA's right up against the back wall with front PR's.  I realize the rear PR's need some breathing room but how much normally?

@carlthess40 there’s a lot of equipment in that picture.  Heresy mains?  How  are you using all those top shelf (KG-4’s?) speakers?  Dual centers?  Atmos?  What is that lower center speaker?  Looks like they’re powered by Marantz. Sorry for all the ??’s, I’m always curious about how others set their system up.

  5. So, I've traveled the 400 miles to pick up my 2 pairs of KG-1's that were on CL and now I see these listed while I'm down here:

    https://anchorage.craigslist.org/ele/d/klipsch-package-2-kg4/6632247294.html

Price drop from $600 to $450.  Seller is firm @ $450.

Will most likely be sleeping out with the Italian greyhounds for a while if I come home with them 😎 but I'm not sure I can resist.

I wouldn't hesitate if they were Heresey's or even KG-5.5's.  Will they be a close timbre match if I used the KG-1's  as surrounds?  Don't need the KV-4 but I believe it tends to be a rare find anymore.  Can't even find any specs on it anywhere.

Leaving town Monday so need to decide if they are worth risking marital discord for by then.

You guys talked me into the KG-1's now what's your take on these KG-4's?

  6. Mr. Crites response;

OK, you can send them.  I estimate around $110.00 per pair for the crossovers rebuilds.  The tweeter diaphragms are $54.00 per pair plus $30.00 per pair to install and test.  Plus shipping back to you.

So, thinking since I've got 2-pairs, I'll send one pair of x/o's & tweets so I can compare to the non upgraded pair.

  7. @Rivernuggets  If you could provide a relatively close up pic of the KG-1 X/O without too much trouble, that would be great.  Otherwise I'm headed down to pick mine up next week but would like to get a pic to Mr. Crites sooner than later and see what his response is.  Also, going to look at a pair of KG-4's advertised on CL.  Wants $600 for the pair & a KV-4 center channel.  Seems high but worth a look.  Thanks

I had an idea for the grills and front Veneer. When I did the restoration on my HIP I noticed there is actually a plywood spacer/motorboard that sandwiches the grill against the inside of the motorboard and the driver mounts to that. Here is a photo of it outside the cab. The original was wrecked and I ended up duplicating it with a router:

It probably wont be too hard to find a similar grill that you could use and either find an HIP to pull apart and create a copy or just measure out a new one. That way you could trim the motorboard flush and have a beautiful veneer and still protect the woofer. Anyway, great job on the speakers! This is the type of craftsmanship that I aspire to.

I realize those were factory installed on the HIP's but would there be any negative' acoustical effects' from a metal grill over the woofer on other models?  I know that over on the 'Polk" forum any metal (I'm making the assumption that those are metal) near any of the drivers is frowned upon.  I'm asking as the prospective new owner of  @longdrive03  project H1's.  I would love to show off that gorgeous motor board but have 4 Italian greyhounds that find the woofer excursion of my subwoofers irresistible to resist.  Your grill idea would sure save me a lot of worry.

    I can understand that completely.

I built Belle's....not LS's.  :)  There should be a link in my signature that you can click on.  It was a labor of love, for sure; primarily weekends but some week nights as they got closer.  ha

My mistake.  Was reading too fast. I will check that link out.

I guess it goes back to the reason I built my Belle's.  I never could find a pair near me that were a) decent priced and b) looked decent at that price.  So, I just built a set from the ground up with all new drivers and crossovers.  Are you handy with wood working or know someone who is?  They might not be authentic and not have the (perceived) resale value as what an original set will, but a person wouldn't have to spend $2k plus on a pair of LS's and then hundreds of dollars on updates, crossovers, cabinet fixes, etc.  You can have all the look and potentially better sound than the originals and closer to LS II's.

    Just a thought...

@avguytx  The concept is wonderful.  I believe I have all the skills necessary and would absolutely enjoy every minute of the process. And the money savings would be a great bonus.

But..... The time that would be necessary to invest in this scale of project is just too prohibitive in my foreseeable future.  My winters are spent working out of town and my summers are spent trying to accomplish everything else that can't be done in the winter. But would really like to see your home built LS's.

It may be a rough time trying to gauge what "fair market value" is in that part of the country; rather hard to compare the prices to what's in the lower 48.  But I agree...they'd have to come down quite a bit before getting overly interested in them...unless you just have money to burn and time on your hands for the drive.

@avguytx  "Money to burn"   Ha Ha  "Not our family Brick" ( The Middle)

My 98 year old mother and the rest of my family lives down that way (Anchorage) and I'm visiting next month so the drive isn't the big issue since I make that trip several times a year.  Would just like to get a decent (fair to both parties) deal.  Especially since both pairs seem to be earlier models that would need upgrading I'm sure.

  12. Seriously contemplating going to look at these. They're over 500 miles away.  Would possibly be interested in both.  Owner not offering much information yet.  Not going to get too anxious yet, just listed and seem a little high priced.

Any suggestions on what questions I should ask and what to look for??  I have no experience with LS's or CW's but they are both 'Dream' speakers of mine.

I have no use for them and hate to stick them in the garage and throw towels over them.... Already have too many pairs of heritage. Hint hint

Does this mean they may become available in the near future??

I doubt it.  The Heritage design is a Klipsch exclusive.  That being said, I'm sure there might be a Jamo LCR bar sometime in the future.

Tossing a like your way for the Jamo love.

Haven’t owned any Jamo’s yet but have heard several models prior to the Klipsch acquisition. Really like the current style and look.
