  1. compressed for over air streaming. i think it's better than netflix if you have the bandwidth to back it up. visually it's really good. not sure the audio is 100% on par with blu ray though but it's improved on some movies over netflix. like netflix, not every show on vudu is perfect. big movies like rogue one play really well on there though. another cool perk is you can share some movies with other people you know for free that are in your library
  2. vudu is my suggestion as well. you have your new release rentals. current tv, basically everything missing from netflix
  3. this doesn't make sense. audyssey is not watching a movie in your living room nor are the people who designed it. their goal isn't the reason people turn it off. our goals are why people turn it off and that is why success is hard to measure if you have not defined a goal. even my personal tastes..audyssey is alright in my large living room on klipsch speakers, in my bedroom on B&W however i hate it. i could go into details on why i suspect this is but the point is you can not have a perfect EQ curve when you aren't sure of the users preference. the time alignment and level settings it does however get right more times than not but even here reflective rooms seem to fool it into making more drastic cuts than are necessary
  4. success is hard to measure when you haven't defined what the goal even is
  5. top 10 under $1000 each. that would make people really think. i know i have found some surprising bargain speakers over the years. the last made in england b&w 602s3 bookshelf is one. 599 a pair and they were excellent at that price. i still have a pair in my office. depending on how you do the math the RF7ii could even make the cut which is another speaker i like just edging in at 1000 each if you haggle. maybe get people talking and see what they come up with
  6. can always bid higher. 9 out of 10 times the people you go against on mid and high end audio equipment know what it's worth. they only go so far. you may not get rock bottom but you get your amp
  7. sub is a great buy. lots of ways you can power it
  8. if it's financial i would think you could easily firesale the scala's for $500 as is touching nothing and $100 on the bookshelves. may be worth keeping and fixing up if you like the sound and are into good audio. that's one of the better speakers klipsch has made
  9. honestly separates don't have to be expensive. an adcom 5400 is around $150 and many of us started with that brand. you can use your receiver as a pre amp another thought is something like a marantz sr 5006 or 5007 receiver. they are 1080p receivers and often sell $200-250 used. same with older high end pioneer elites if you like that sound
  10. they are all over ebay the rc64ii is easy to find
  11. this makes a lot of sense. thank you for thinking that through. the RF7 analogy was great. it's as a mention one of my favorite klipsch speakers ever and one thing that stood out with it was how well it blended.
  12. i have a question about this as it's making me think about a car audio project i've been trying to get right. that 3-5khz zone is a problem area and in newer car doors you have a tweeter up high and woofer down about 15" from that. morel is crossing their tweeters on the good stuff at 2200hz and going 18db/oct on the woofer for the low pass. i'm wondering if this is to try and address that very problem when you use a small tweeter and have to cross at 3500-4000hz and the 6.5" midbass is just not going to be smooth up n that freq as it starts breaking up and naturally rolling off before the crossover. morel is money but like many audio thing you get what you pay for
  13. the only reason i see them as comparable is cost. the rf7ii was put on sale for for 2000 a pair fairly often which is where you can get a new heresy 3. used and b stock aren't much different often selling for 1500ish which is where the same in H3 is. now if we go reaaaally used like heresy 2 or the 1s which sell for 300-700 a pair then sure when i look at ebay right now a bstock rf7ii is 1799pr shipped which isn't the best deal they have ever sold for physically, sure i agree with you. the rf7 is much more speaker and i agree again it may not be the best for every use or every room but i still like them more than heresys {subjective soap box} the one thing that REALLY stands out with the rf7ii over the rf82ii is quality. the sound produced is just on another level. they aren't as harsh. midrange is produced more realistic. fit and finish are extremely nice. on paper someone may see going from dual 8s to dual 10s but in reality it's night and day. it may be just 1 step up the line but it's a giant step. that's my take anyway
  14. back to being subjective but i would take an rf7ii over a heresy anyday all day. they just do better with modern sounds. movies, EDM, beats, hip hop etc. heresy 1 and 2s like tube amps and or warm higher end solid state & record players. if you feed them that and ideally have a dampened room they can work but they aren't the easiest speaker to make sound good. you start playing mp3s through a receiver with a heresy and you're probably going to be scratching your head wondering why they are highly regarded. some people love them but again, try it. as mentioned above the rf7 has a larger sound stage than the 280. i totally agree. the rf7ii is honestly one of my favorite klipsch speakers. it's just versatile. you can play records, cd's mp3s, movies, they work with solid state. have a more modern sound. the low end output on an rf7 is also quite a lot stronger than the heresy. more modern horn design. list goes on really. the a300 is a solid entry level amp but 359 refurbished is a rip, they are $399 new. it would be a substantial upgrade over receiver power and marantz is decent as receiver goes. the emo will be more dynamic, more headroom. you have a real transformer, discrete output stage etc think your system out though. if you're going 5 channel you want an a500 not the a300. run all 5 channels on a real amplifier.
  15. subjective questions like this are impossible to answer. find a store with a good return policy or a friend who has a pair of rf7's and listen in a large room like that you could easily move the 280s to surround duty and find an rc64 center you also may find you want more amplifier for stereo listening in a room that size. you have the pre outs and many choices exist in the 150-200wpc range, some like the adcom 5500 start around $300-350 for a nice used one. it goes up from there
  16. read and study. it won't take you long to figure it all out again the other thing you need to watch for is what's called HDCP 2.2 if you get a 4k TV.
  17. what is fail? what is good or bad? like i said....calibrated to whom? i also do not believe it's in the hands of the operator even though that is a substantial part. some amplifiers and pre amps just have a sound i do not like. pioneers car audio decks come to mind. i really don't like any of them. not sure about home audio. some of their older high end stuff was really good. i haven't had a chance to play with a modern elite yet as i get great deals on marantz which has kind of married me to the brand. i paid $450 for a new sr5011 for example. hard to look elsewhere at those deals. it sounds good though. audyseey has a major shortfall with it's automatic in the box approach to sound. you either like what some engineer thought up or you don't. you can't alter the sound at all without turning it off
  18. buy both, tinker, return one stores like best buy are great for this if you have a hard time deciding. each has a different sonic signature. have to figure out what you like. marantz sounds similar sr5011 and up, the pioneer i have not played with but pioneer historically sounds better the more you spend.
  19. if you have dual sb13s you will want more than just a pair of rb61s. you could do multiples you have way more subwoofer than you need for the rest of the system the cornwalls with those dual 13s would be a better match volume wise. no idea on what center would work. think out your whole system before you buy more. you have a lot already and now it's about tying into something functional
  20. i agree. some of the sounds that can be missing can be traced back to the source material. room reflection as you point out, the room playing along with the tones which is yet another or the actual gear. i'm not 100% sure i can hear 20khz anymore but i can hear 16khz and there are various sounds in that region that some pre amps like the roll off. this is usually not a problem with real hi fi gear but can be with receivers and with car audio. recently i decided to start upgrading the stereo in my 4runner. amps and speakers from morel and JL audio. decent stuff. the pre amp though aka deck. could never get a pioneer nex to sound right. moved to higher end alpine. the magic happened. completely different sound. detail was back. reflections are just terrible in car audio and in general it's much harder to get to sound correct than home. what was interesting is the massive change the pre amp made. the end point with this story of course is when you're doing 2ch, 5ch, 7ch in a home you do definitely need to consider all angles. the room, time correction, the gear etc. sometimes one piece of the puzzle is what's bothering you and it may not be what you think it was. last month before i started this project i would have never guessed the pre amp could have this drastic of an impact on a system,. oh...that reminds me of something. have you guys came up with any ideas to help break up standing waves and reflections with hard rooms? hickory floors, low amounts of furniture? sometimes people have wild ideas i have not considered and one area of my home has more trouble than it should simply because it's an echo chamber.
  21. x2 you have time alignment to deal with on multi channel but really. sound is sound. i completely agree with chris here. a good multi channel should eliminate or reduce dead spots in a room, not be sonically different than a good 2ch. some people may possible confuse that fill with a different sound maybe? granted it will register a bit different to the brain
  22. think about this and it will answer your own question. calibrated to whom?
  23. x2 this is seriously the way to do it.
  24. if you tune for music HT often sounds just fine unless you like the exaggerated fake movie theater sounds when i step on my back porch and hear birds sing...that's why i want my stereo to do if birds are on a cd if i go to a live performance where instruments are being played. that's what i want my stereo to do when i play said instruments modern HT systems have no dynamics, almost none. the fine detail is missing. it's a very processed sound. i would gladly take a pair of b&w 803 d3's on a krell class A over any multi channel HT system i could think of. i'm going to get a more life like sound from quality than i will processed effects chips my point being...really....you have to ask what the standard is before you decide if your comment is actually true ps...if anyone wants a REAL challenge, try getting car audio right with what's currently on the market today and not going broke buying exotic items
