Jeff ---------------- Jeff, I hate to think that source material preferrence is a factor, but you have a good point. Having owned CWs from 1973, I do have a good feel for the sound. In earlier days I sported Khorns flank, 2LaS center, 2LaS back.In those days, that system was considered "big time audio". So back to personal preferrence. I now use 4 CWs and 4 Mod-H. God help me, I am addicted to the "boot in the chest" of the CW. I spoke to a Klipsch engineer about 4CWs vs 2 Cornerhornes and his reply was "no comparison". I took that as a positive comment. Am I addicted to bass reflex distortion? Some here will say yes. Back to the Bell. It is a furniture grade, cut down LaS. A lesser speaker than LaS. The top end and 400 mid sound wonderfully clean in the LaS.(Opps a little less in Bell)...But the bottom end of Bells & LaS make the overall sound "hollow" to my ear. Yep, they are quick...But they just dont get down there. VERY FORWARD. (great projection in a theater) But just dont get down there. Having said all this...I am opening myself up to ridicule with this statement...Properly amplified, 4CWs will stomp the guts out of any 2 cornerhorns. Anyone? CW people help me out! Back to the point. Cornwalls being voiced like Pauls cornerhorn...If you like the horn sound...for two channels,Cornwall is the only Klipsch product that I would accept if I couldnt have the cornerhorns. Choose between 2Khorns and 4 CWs....Well........ I.B. Slammin

Tung oil is NOT the same as an oiled finish...it is a totally DIFFERENT type of finish! ---------------- Andy, Oh no! Do you mean strip them all the way down to bare wood? Would the 00 steel wool dipped in oil work? This is my first pair (1972) that I sold to a friend and bought back 20 odd years later. He used Tung oil on them once. They still have a gloss to them. I would like for them to match the oiled pair(1975. Man I would realy hate to have to take them down all the way? Thanks, Terry

But somewhere between Madison and Milwaukee is another country for sure. I kinda meant it as a joke, but there are similarities. It's easier to hear when you have demonstrations of the different styles side by side. It was funny seeing this guy who normally plays cahunta (sp?) music groovin' to an Irishman playing a concertina. Marvel ---------------- Marvel, I knew you were kinda joking. I think people in Madison lived in the 60s in the 50s! But thanks for mentioning the Irish anyway. Did you know that God created alcohol so that we Irish could not rule the world? I.B. 4. Jim, I always use old railroad ties. Just don't burn the scraps in the fireplace...the fumes make the kids a little crazy. Seriously, check out the "Commercial Khorn" thread on the BB. You might be able to incorporate the concept and have some degree of portability. I.B. Slammin PS: John E may need our help. Olga does not seem to like the looks of VOT horns atop the CWs. Can you say "Interior Decorator"?

  6. Me too. One set of oiled walnut CWs have been Tung-ed. I am ready to French rub both pair. (no play on words intended) How do I get rid of the Tung oil. Help Andy! I.B. Slammin

At the National Folk Festival held in Chattanooga a few years ago, I attended a workshop that had a real polka player, the kind who uses a 'stomach steinway', to a Mexican American playing a smaller squeeze box to John Williams (the only name I remember, and no, not the star wars film composer). He did a lot on a concertina. The similarities were quite striking. The Mexican American said that a lot of their music came to them from German immigrants, which sure made sense when you heard the music. It was all very good. Anyone ever go to a wedding in Wisconsin, where they would hire out a hall and have a polka band for the wedding reception? Wow! Everybody dances, form little kids to the old laies. What a blast. Marvel ---------------- You got to be s###ing us. Please say yes. Attended a wedding in Maddison. They played Zappa...and danced! I.B. Slammin.. . ..and a one and a two..

Previously, he was using a Cornwall, and before that a Heresy for center-channel duty. His first wife, Belle, did not like the looks of the LaScala, but she "allowed it into her living room." One of the reasons she disliked the LaScala was because it was plain plywood construction, and NOT the fine-furniture look of PWK's walnut veneered k-horns or the previously used Cornwall or Heresy. Another reason she disliked the LaScala was that she was able to put a long tall table over the Cornwall or Heresy...to kinda hide them a bit(Cornwall was original Cornwall II model on its side). So, in order to bring a smile to Belle's face, as a surprise for her, PWK designed and built the first Belle Klipsch speaker...naming it after and giving it to his wife. He designed it so that it stood alone as a fine piece of furniture, no table needed to cover it up...and so that it was an aesthetic match for the k-horns, while still having the sonic performance of the LaScala...IOW a dressed-up LaScala. Pretty simple! Belle passed away in 1975 or early 1976...and shortly after, PWK married Mrs. Valerie. He also designed a speaker for her...to use in her music classes, but Mrs. Valerie, upon hearing how difficult the cabinet was to construct, and how the builders assigned the task had called it a "little bastard"...told PWK just to name it the "little bastard". The speaker was designed and first built in 1976, and was designated the LB-76. It is basically a smaller version of a LaScala, with "half the folded horn of the LaScala turned up on its end"....the mid-horn of the Cornwall(or maybe Heresy?), with the tweeter vertically mounted to one side of the midhorn. About a half dozen pairs of LB-76's were built, but it never went into regular production because the cost in labor to build it was more than that of the LaScala...and since it was intended to be a smaller, more easily maneuvered-around speaker that approached LaScala performance at a lower cost than the LaScala...it simply wasn't economically sound to spend more building it, but sell it for less! Pretty simple! I always loved to borrow a pair of LB-76's from the plant to take to the river for parties and such when I worked there...they really sounded great! ---------------- Does anyone have a photo of the LB-76? Would love to see one! I. B. Slammin

  17. You East Arkansas boys are "flat-landers" and rednecks. We North West Arkansas sophisticates relaxed in the mountains with vintage wines (Tonti Town or Altis), Las in the side doors of a custom van (cassette deck - no 8-tracks please)and listened to opera. Or maybe we were on the White River drinking PBR and listening to Doug Clark & The Hot Nuts.......I just can't remember........ Love Ya brothers I.B. Slammin

  21. Oh my, gentlemen.... Its all about F****** money! For the last 30 years I have spent most recreational funds (as limited as they were and are) on sound equipment to parallel the standards PWK established in the mid 40's with the corner horn. Paul himself lowered his standards with a direct radiator called Mod-H. He needed a "book shelf" speaker to complete the line. He thought that it was a Heresy! Don't get me wrong, I own 4 of them. To my ears, the last great speaker from Klipsch was the Chorus.Everything else was or is less than that standard. Bob Moors(sp?)started the decline in the 70s. Andy Horn Builder was there, he knows. In early years,Klipsch was a gift to the world. Now it is a business.I understand that. KEEP & TREASURE the real stuff. I.B. Slammin
