  1. I really do not think it would help that much changing out the OPT's, the complaints you mentioned.
  2. I do not think protects the mid driver is correct because unlike the tweeter most mid drivers can take lots of power. The T2 is not in the tweeter circuit but then I have not seen the schematic you are referring to. Some cheap speakers only have a cap on the tweeter for a crossover network and nothing else and depend on the inherent rolloff of of the bass speaker and driver for the bass and mid crossover point.
  3. As I stated previously I played with a number of different X-over designs for my '86 LaScala and the one I thought best sounding to my ears was the one with no autotransformer just as Klipsch has abandoned it in it's present line of speakers. But that being said I am using an AA being old and wanting the speakers stock as much as possible for my kid after I no longer need them. Sound plenty good enough but I did think without the autotransformer did sound somewhat better but I am sensitive to phase shift which any transformer is going to have. Not trying to make a point, just info for anyone such as KT-88 that might want to play with the network for their older Heritage line. Designing and building different networks can be fun and entertaining if one has the time. No scientific analysis was done, just a layman's ears for the final judge. I do not put much emphasis on others doing measurements of speakers no matter what kind of test instruments used being most do not have the proper room to do such test that will certainly be different for someone else's room no matter what that find. Very few have an anechoic chamber to do proper speaker analysis. Testing speakers is not like testing electronic gear unless one has the proper facility. Just my thoughts.
  4. Transformers are nothing more than wire usually wrapped around an iron core. There must be a different turn ratio on the replacement than the T2. Since you are playing some why not try some different settings on the replacement just for fun. I would be curious on the results. I am using the 3654, I believe that is the number, on my AA's that I built and am curious on your findings. I built around 30 different kinds of xovers for my speakers years ago and found some I liked better than the AA's but consider the AA's plenty good enough. It is what I am using now. None sound bad but I do not have a trained ear and do not know how a good Grand piano should sound like. Any good solid copper wire 18 gauge or better would be ideal in my world. Good post.
  5. Redirecting the electrons back to the plate is the job of the suppressor grid which has almost always been connected to the cathode of the tube which is negative that repeals the electrons which are bombarded off of the plate by the force of the electrons from the cathode striking the plate. I have not read or studied the articles of using a cap but it seems to me an isolation cap makes the suppressor grid floating. Apparently it still repels the loose electrons from what is said. Theory escapes me but the articles say it improves the sound. Subjective I know but who knows if one does not try.
  6. Sounds like someone on this forum needs to do some testing and post their opinion of the added cap. Maynard first pointed this mod out to me probably years ago but refreshed my memory a few days ago. I may experiment adding the cap to the suppressor myself as soon as it gets too hot for an old man to work outside here in the deep south of Alabama. Deckert seems to be sold on the advantages.
  7. I've seen that years ago but not sure if it is still available. But I have not searched Decker's website for it. I would not build from a board anyways but nice to have the schematic if one chooses to build point to point.
  8. The plate amp I used does the same thing on automatic but if I flip the switch to on all the time it does not do it.
  9. Found this on the diyaudio forum and since there is so much talk of Steve's little amp I thought members on this forum may want to try and build one for themselves. I have built one on another published schematic which I have shared on this forum in the past but not this one. https://www.decware.com/newsite/ZKIT1.pdf
  10. As beneficial to audio reproduction as well from your personal experience and not from some textbook theory. Would you happen to have the test equipment to see what you are hearing? My thoughts are SS diodes are faster and the tube is introducing something enjoyable in the mix with it's delay. My favorite form of amplification is SET amplifiers that add some 2nd harmonics along with a touch of 3rd. As you said more musical to if not exactly accurate reproduction. I only strive to please myself now but everyone that hears my setup is amazed at the sound as well.
  11. When someone designs an amplifier they need DC to enable the active devices, tubes or transistors, to work properly and to be able to do it they need a clean DC source. This is the only reason for a power supply section being we only have AC coming into our home or office. When I see the PS section 60db to 70db down from the primary signal on an analyzer I know that my PS section will be quite on my LaScala's. A designer aims for a perfect DC source with as little AC ripple as reasonable possible within cost restraints and part selection coming into the equation. In other words cleaner is better. True some claim a certain rectifier tube improves the sound, in their opinion, but I have never been one to swap rectifier tubes hoping to improve the sound. I put it in the same category as large cables. Money is better spent in other areas IMHO.
  12. As Nelson Pass says, "It's not kidney dialysis it's entertainment." I can agree with what you say but in my opinion it should be done in the signal path and not in the PS section. But then one only has to please themselves, or at least they should see it that way and not get too caught up in what others may say.
  13. Not the job of rectification to add anything to the sound. It's job is to turn AC to DC only. If it adds anything to the sound it is some type of distortion. Possible pleasant that many may like but it should not. The more neutral the rectification the better the device is doing it's job. I personally use SS rectification when possible nowadays.
  14. All you need is a buffer with two outputs, one for power amp and one for sub. Possible just a inexpensive passive one. That or some of those cheap Y cables. I use a B1v2 buffer with two outputs to enable the use of a sub with my many amplifiers.
  15. I do use a Firstwatt B1v2 buffer without gain for volume control enabling the use of a sub with my power amps most of the time.
  16. Like your setup. Do you really need a preamp? Sometime, depending on power amp 2nd harmonics, adding a tube pre can be too much of a good thing. Your amps appear to be push pull so you may enjoy a touch more 2nd harmonic into the mix though. I have many tube pre's along with SS pre's but run my system on LaScala's without any extra gain from a linestage the majority of the time. Just not needed with our high efficiency Klipsch speakers unless the power amp just does not have enough gain.
  17. I do not think it was built for Shakey or anyone else. I believe it was one built by him for him long before he accepted money from members here to build them an amplifier. My thoughts are Shakey just got tired of all his BS and excuses when he made that statement. I do not believe there was ever an amp started for a member here by CBH. Not an honorable guy is my thought.
  18. Hard to beat the prices of the tubes for the Sweetie. Tube prices have risen dramatically in a relatively short time. Most know the reasons so I will not elaborate further.
  19. I recently bought a pair from this guy on Ebay and was well satisfied. He has another pair at a decent price. No affiliation so buy at your own risk. Positive ratings and reviews though. https://www.ebay.com/itm/134480808027?hash=item1f4fae485b:g:5A8AAOSwY2pkCNms
  20. Only one, Western Electric, that I am aware of. Price of 300B tubes are outrageously high now no matter the brand. I have tried Gold Lions and JJ's and both sound really good to me. Not sure on how long they will last but not expected to last as long as the old WE tubes of old.
  21. Let's just use a common word about the video thrown around a lot these days and leave it at that. Misinformation.
  22. Well said. The problem with testing speakers is most do not have the facilities to properly test them. An anechoic chamber is needed which few have access to. My measurements in my room will in no way resemble the results seen in a proper chamber with lab test equipment. GR guy is just a hack trying to make a buck selling witch oil.
  23. For those that like it loud get this, continuous. MAX CONTINUOUS OUTPUT: 125dB
  24. I just consider him a con man and pay no attention to what he says. Who exactly is the guy and where did he get his engineering degree? Some fall for his BS is the sad part.
