  1. A recommendation can be only very vague, until you tell what speakers you have, what you wanna build and maybe for what application. Generally it's advised, to crossover when both speakers are 3 dB down. The crossover point for a tweeter should be 2 or 3 times higher than the Fs if no factory recommendation is available. Consider that even woofers beam like horns at high frequencies. I can mail you a file to crossover design from Wayne Parham, a guy who knows his business. It's a big file, about 2,7 MB, therefore i don't attach it here.
  2. Bob there are two auctions on ebay with 16 Ohm tweeters. One auction is for your T 350 tweeters, the other for T 35 tweeters. See http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1395629583 http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1395473519 Don't know, if the diaphragma of the T 35 tweeter would fit in the T 350.
  3. If you don't like, what comes out (of your speakers), you will find thousands of reasons why not. Missing accuracy is one. Imagine a combo only with acoustic instruments without amplification. When they play in different halls (or recording studios) they sound different. And when do they sound right? Never and ever. Thus it is impossible to hear the band like they sounded during recording, when your listening room is another. A and O of accuracy is keeping the same conditions. For that reason are measurement results in the (audio) industry different under different conditions.
  4. Check any good handbook of physical constants and you will find that silver has much lower resistivity than copper. In fact silver has the lowest resistivity of anything which is solid at room temperature and is thus suitable for making wires. However the practical solution is to use thicker copper wire. Still, to avoid the debilitating nature of skin effects, the best solution is to use silver plated copper wire. Of course, not to be overlooked is the fact that copper is reddish, and so will tend to brighten or warm up the sound; while silver, being white, will tend towards a neutral presentation, which can be tweaked towards brightness by selective use of gold-plated jacks and plugs. The type of wire insulation used can grossly affect sound quality. For example, rubber-type insulations act as shock absorbers that dampen dynamic peaks (such as turning the crack of a rim shot into something more like a thud). They also have a high coefficient of friction which slows the passage of sound through the wire causing the musical pitch to be lower. To counteract this effect, musical groups have to tune to a concert A as high as 450 Hz in order to for the correct musical pitch to be reproduced through the sound system. The best wire insulation is Teflon which is a very firm material with a very low coefficient of friction. This allows the sound to slide easily through the wires without dampening the peaks or slowing it down. The colors of wire insulation should be selected according to light spectrum wavelengths and absorption. Generally bright colors are reflective. Therefore bright colored insulation will reduce high frequency loses by reflecting HF audio back into the wires thus maintaining clarity and brightness. Dark, absorptive colors should be used for low frequency wire insulation. By absorbing and carrying some of the low frequency energy dark colored insulation actually increases the effective diameter of the conductor - a good thing for improving the high current flow needed at low frequencies. You should also rack your signal sources above your amplifiers, and rack the amplifiers higher than the loudspeakers. This is so that the electrons don't have to struggle uphill through the wires to get the sound out. You'd be amazed at the difference that can make. Also, both speakers should be off to the same side of the amp, so that the loudspeaker cables are subject to the same Coriolis forces owing to the earth's rotation; failure to observe this can result in truly nasty phase shifts. 5. You can build you crossovers either by the plans from Al Klappenberger, see http://www.alkeng.com/, or by the older style Type A network, see attached file. About the differences between these crossovers and where to get the needed autotransformer see the thread "La Scala crossover upgrades-ALK network bass driver" in the 2-channel audio forum, http://forums.klipsch.com/idealbb/view.asp?topicID=26529&sessionID={479C99B3-9938-4A8A-AA0D-BC18068CC411}. The adress of Audio Tuning is Audio Tuning, Margaretenstraße 98, A-1050 Wien. Ask for Mr. Bitzinger, phone 0043/1/544 85 82. This man will help you. Bernd
  6. Volker, To drivers with your listed part number i have no specs. Sorry. I don't understand, for what reason you do this measurements. What's the matter you don't trust having a K-33? How much did you paid for the both drivers? Do you have the squawkers, horns and tweeters for you La Scala project? Or do you wanna only build the bass bins? If needed, i have one K-55 V mid driver and two K-400 metal horns, which i would sell. What you can do at this point is building the LaScala bass bins. You need for the raw bass bins about a weekend, that's short. Then test the speakers you have. But i believe you will not be satisfied with the Eminence Kappas. I ran my Klipschorns, until i bought new K-33 drivers, with Eminence 15-B300 and what i can say today, they sounded bad with weak bass. You will not find a replacement driver with this Re, fs, qts, Xmax and Vas. So i advice other drivers than the original Klipsch only with active crossovers and EQ. If all fails, a good and cheap source getting new K-33 drivers is Audio Tuning in Vienna, Austria. They are authorisized Klipsch dealers. They sell this drivers cheaper than in Germany. I paid for each driver about 180 Euro incl. shipping. When desired i give you the contact information. Bernd
  7. I've watched this two auctions, but did not bid. It's pity, that you didn't won the auctions. For the third auction i wish you much luck. In a 15 year old speaker catalogue this EV Sentry horns without drivers were sold for about 220 Euro, so the price which the horns left the first two auctions is ok. The 1824 M and 1824 S driver were sold for about 230 Euro. The EV 1824 M driver would not be ok in klipschorns or La Scalas. The EV tech sheet for the 1824 S driver (which has greater power handling)shows a usable frequency range from 300 to 3000 Hz +/- 5 dB with a SPL of 107 dB. Better would be a 1828 (260 - 10000 Hz +/- 5 dB) or an 1829 (280 - 8000 Hz +/- 5 dB) both have a SPL of 105 dB. In an old post William F. Gil McDermott told he is using the 1829 with a wooden horn. You should care about the right impedance for the mid driver. The K-55 is rated 16 Ohm vs. the 1824 rated 8 Ohm. The 1824 would appear louder than the K-55, please ask a network specialist. There is the Monacor KU-516 driver for 50 Euro, but with an upper frequency limit of 6500 Hz i believe, that the frequency response falls too much before the 6000 Hz crossover setting in the klipschorn. Now much luck in the last auction. I know, what you do on sunday night. Bernd

    Korn Untouchables

I'll try to throw it over the ocean.
  10. Perhaps this could be a horn loaded sub - see attached file. Furthermore you can use it as a sideboard. LOL. Bernd
  11. Can you send a picture or describe the woofer? Is there a factory logo or stamp, do you see a serial number? I don't know about measurement, i only know the specs from AA for the Eminence driver: RE OHMS 3.39 FS HZ 34.46 LE MH .96 MMS GMS 78.59 QM 7.39 CMS mm/N .2714 QE .410 RMS NS/M 2.3037 QT .390 VAS LTRS 301.66 XMAX MM 8.20 SD SCM 889.59 BL TM 11.88 EBP 84.4 EFF % 2.91 SPL dB 96.6 Serial number should be 1520F5637. But there are several other K-33 drivers made from CTS or Electro Voice, where i don't have any specs. Bernd
  12. A solid invest - better than buying a mercedes benz.
  13. Guy Landau, can you please explain "NOS". Bernd
  14. Hello Frans, additional to my previous post you can find selenium horns at http://www.lsv-achenbach.de/homepage.htm Bernd
  15. Hello Frans, look at this ebay auctions for EV SM 120 horns: http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1393228459 http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1393228011 http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1390913719 Sellers are from Germany. For very interesting altec stuff from UK look at http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1392763273 Please let us know if you get some of this stuff and how does it sound in your system. Greetings Bernd
  16. Yes, i am for myself from nuremberg, germany. It's truely hard to find some altec stuff in europe. I'm looking for Altec 511 B horns on ebay. There were two auctions from mrmore to this horns and the reserve price never was reached. Maybe he puts it in in a third auction we can bid. A friend of me has two EV SM 120A horns. When i installed them in my klipschorns i will notice the forum about the changes. Tom Brennan recommends them as an upgrade. Sorry, i don't know anyone else who would sell these EV horns. I remember an ebay auction about a half year ago they were sold. And very rare are some offers at Musikhaus Thomann in the "Kleinanzeigen" section, look here: http://www.netzmarkt.de/thomann/tho0000.html?sn=97cc530949d3877d9014059cccb4edb0 Bernd
  17. Did you any network changes and if yes what? What network type (A, AA, AK or ALK) do you use? Bernd
  18. When i bought my klipschorns 3 years ago, i compared these with my old fostex BK 202 horns. These are similar speaker than the lowthers. I remember, the fostex rated with 96 db/1W/1m weren't loud enough. The resolution in sound of the klipschorns were much better. My first impression about the klipschorn was "what a superb midrange" compared with the fostex. I was more impressed about the midrange as about the bass of the klipschorns. I decided quick, not to use both speakers in a kind of 4-speaker-setup. The klipschorn, and i know the La Scalas, have enough performance, to fill the room with an adequate level of sound pressure. A don't believe, a combination of these two speaker types will ever do very well. My advice is install the lowthers in another listening room. Bernd
  19. Did you look at the atlas website www.atlassound.com?
  20. I bought last week the new CD Untouchables from Korn. Can't say, that is a good CD compared with the previous four Korn CDs. It's hard to describe, why i don't like it - the songs are somehow emotionally flat. I believe, i will give it away as a gift for someone.
  21. I know earlier JBL products as expensive and with high quality. Today it seems for me they try to sell on the consumer market cheap and trendy products, but the quality is lower compared with other brands at this price. They can't do cheap with comparable quality. One day they will ruin their reputation. The Klipsch consumer products i can't compare, because they are very hard to find in germany. Some weeks ago i heard a sony home theater setup with boxes like bose. The DVD player ran with a curios demo CD and the speakers did piep piep piep. Sony did completly disappointed me.
  22. That can happen in every place on this world, in germany too. We live since 1 1/2 years in a house with 4 neighbors. Our two neighbors in the 1st floor were good friends and had often garden parties with open fire in front of our sleeping room til 5 o' clock in the morning. Late in the night they played often table soccer. I felt then they would move their furnitures in the middle of the night. But what luck three months ago. One of these two guys left the house and took the girlfriend of the neighbor next door with him. Now silence for heaven.
  23. That looks fine, Jim. My congratulation. Good to know, that the altec horn fits into the space above the bass bin. I feared it could be too long. Therefore i let pass a rare auction of altec 511 horns here in nuremberg, germany. Did you thought about installing the tweeter vertically? Previous posts said, the dispersion of the T35-Tweeter would be better if mounted vertically. Why did you mount the tweeter much higher above the altec horn? How does it sound in that high position?
  24. Hi Kenratboy, What i will do with the big PWK-logo plates after refinishing the bass bins i don't know. It makes me a very proud owner of klipschorns, when i see the big Klipsch logo. Maybe i mount them back again after refinishing. I thought many times of refinishing them, perhaps in a black finish instead of the PVC-film. But in my rented home it is difficult to do any woodworking, especially how to avoid waste from sawing in your living rooms. Furthermore i need to rebuild the top section, which the former owner removed, for the second cabinet. The third reason is, that i wait for some EV SM120A horns to test with the K-55M and then i need to build new top sections for each cabinet. Bernd
  25. Thanks all of you for your replies. I uploaded as attachment a closeup picture from my left klipschorn. This bin is the only one from my two cornerhorns with the top section with no raiser like style C. The second cornerhorn i bought without the top section, which was removed from the former owner for disco use. Please take a closer look to the finish of the bass bin. It's an PVC film with about 2 mm thickness, oliv coloured with silver speckles. The big front plate with measurements about 29,5 x 10,5 inch seems to be an original Klipsch part. What do you think about the origin off the PVC film and the Klipsch-logo plate? John, you are right about the driver mismatch, when i bought these klipschorns from the discothek owner. There was one Beyma 15G450 and one Multicel B15A in the bass section installed, one mid driver was an original K-55V and the other was a Cervin Vega VP100D (8Ohm) mounted on the K-400 horns with the PWK-logo. The tweeters were two JBL 2404 baby butts. First it sounded really much better than my previous ACR BK 202 backloaded horns (like the Jericho horn or the Lowther Acousta 115). But after a while i was not completely satisfied. The mid bass was weak with the replaced bass drivers, and the Cervin Vega driver was two less loud and has an estimated frequency range from 800 Hz up. From Vienna i bought 2 K-33E bass drivers (got much better price from the Austrian Klipsch trader as from anyone else in Germany - about 180 $ incl. shipping). From a seller in Nuremberg i bought the two AA networks, the two K-55M mid drivers with the welded horn and the EV T-35 tweeters. Now it sounds really satisfying as i compared with a stock klipschorn at a local store. I believe i will never sell or replace my klipschorns. I'm really "horny" from my first days of hearing music. My first experience with horns were at the age of 16 in a discothek with four JBL 4520, four JBL 2470 mid drivers with 2395 horn lens (like Tom Brennans) and eight JBL 2405 slot tweeters. Still today in my memories it sounds fantastic or maybe in better words h o r n y. For my home use i build at the age of 17 two Klipsch La Scalas, but with any cheap Beyma 12" drivers, because i had as student to less money. I realized after destroying the DIY La Scalas, what wonderful speakers they could be, after i found this speakers years later on the Klipsch homepage. Then i owned for three years the Swiss made ACR BK 202. With 33, three years ago, my early dream became true, when i bought the klipschhorns. Best sounding for home use. Horns forever!!! Has anybody experience how Martin bins or Shearer horns sound? I have two 15" drivers here and don't know what to do with them? Room is enough, my sitting room is about 26 x 20 x 10 foot. P.S.: Great forum! Bernd
