  1. Hmm. Barter for a new server? I once rebuilt a website for a speaker company. Then, upon completion, this HUGE box arrived with this next-to-top-of-the-line surround sound system in it. It was cool. Sold it on eBay. Then we went our separate ways. Just a thought.
  2. A friend of mine bought a used bulldozer to grade around his home. He is doing OJT and will sell the dozer when he is done - probably on eBay and probably, knowing him, for a profit. He is having fun and saving a bundle.
  3. Sounds like a baited question. I started a long-winded answer, but I would rather point out that the speakers you mention above have only one paper cone each. The rest are horn+driver combinations, except for the kg4 which has a treated paper passive "cone." (The kg4 is nothing like the true Heritage speakers.) The rest depends on the engineering/configuration of medium, hardware/software, and speakers - the most important phase of the chain since that is the most audible variable. It is just plain to see that the old good stuff can often be had for less than fairly good new stuff. Though, there is some new equipment out there that looks AND sounds really good. I just think that today's listeners generally enjoy something else than most listeners on these boards. Realistic drums, piano, staging, etc. are not required of "modern" synthetic music production. Take the iPod, please.
  4. Here's some more free advice. Are your floors in the rooms above the basement stiff enough? Can you feel someone entering the room because the floor deflects? Do the dishes rattle in a cabinet when you walk across the room? Does your needle skip when you walk toward your turntable? Before you close in your basement, you can stiffen a deflective floor by "blocking" the floor joists with a double laminated short length of the same size joist material as your floor. Screw or nail them perpendicular to the joists. If you do this, be sure to stagger the blocks so you don't weaken the joist with too many screws or nails. You can also "sister" the existing joists with another length of same joist material. This works great and takes care of any deflection problems. (As usual, you are entitled to the forum discount for building consultation.)
  5. "DO NOT SKIMP ON YOUR HEADERS. Depending on wall thinkness, use either dbl 2x12 or triple 2x12 sandwiched with plywood as required to match you stud width. Provide no less than 3 studs (king & jack studs combined) at either side of the opening to support the header. This will give your walls a solid feel." Gilbert: Then why use 24" oc? I know you can use 24 oc with 2x6 studs but why chintz on wall framing but overbuild the headers? If you are using solid core doors, overbuilding headers might be a good idea to decrease slamming vibration but if your walls flex, the work is wasted. Just wondering.
  6. 16" standard OC studs is recommended. There is no gain in using 12" OC framing and insulation comes 16" wide. You will just spend more money and time and there is no sonic enhancement. If you plan on staying there long, use drywall screws instead of nails so you don't have to worry about "nail pops." 5/8" drywall on the ceiling is fire protection and sound absorption in conjunction with good insulation between floors. THE trickiest part will be your choice of surface treatment. Paint will make the walls reflective. Unless you want to leave drywall untreated to deaden the room, you will need to consider what kind of paint (or other) you will be using. (I painted our basement with satin finish and it was a mistake.) Frankly, just studs and craft backed insulation will give you a terrific "dead" room. Use the clap test after the frame & insulation phase and then the finished phase and you will know what I mean. I hope it turns out well.
  7. To some, that is a collection. But to you, that's a harem. Unbelievable. That shot should be on the Klipsch Heritage pages.
  8. Sold the Sony too. Hey, $425 was a great return and it bugged me that the meter lights did not work and were a notorious problem on that model (TA-N77ES). But it was a great amp! I just put on the soundtrack from Gladiator. Mood music.
  9. The Altecs were parted out last year and auctioned off. I just could not REALLY enjoy them in my smallish room. (I guess I'm not a "Heritage Altec guy.") Perhaps, if I was in a real THEATER, since they are really domesticated Voice of the Theater speakers, they would sound great. These Cornwalls are fantastic! My old tube amps are all gone and I am running good SS but I also have one of those ten-cent Harman Kardon 430 receivers in my office. My vintage tube stuff was too old and in need of much love that I could not give them. Someday, I will get another tube. (I have a bunch of loose EL-34's, 12AX7's, etc. around to revive an accidental find if that happens.) I DO have one of those PWK-approved Crown D-75 amps somewhere. Time to dig it out? I can understand why you guys love these speakers so much. Now I need to make some stands to get them off the floor.
  10. or iPod white, or WhiteWalls, or whatever. They sound the same. '79 Cornwalls. Architectural White. Special Order. Okay, all kidding aside, they were painted so they would not clash with other woods in the house. But I am not the offender. Actually, it's kind of convenient. I can put stuff on top without worrying about the top. And they brighten up the basement. EDIT: or, What if Ikea made Klipsch speakers?
  11. Quartets look nice. The sound, though, is definitely user biased. I had a pair once. The speaker has to have a compatible amp or else it's razors on the ears. I don't want to sound negative. It's just that I hate to see one go through a lot of trouble to get a pair shipped and then be unhappy. I had a pair with an Academy center and, for HT, it was great. But for stereo listening, it was harsh. Shop around. Be patient.

  13. shallow article, but good skimmed comparison
  14. Depends on what you mean by "crisper." "Thinner" may be a better description if comparing to Khorns of equal condition. Maybe you like "crisper" better. Khorns are able to fill a room more than twice the size of Heresys. What size is your room? (I really don't have any idea what this person's problem is, I have only heard Khorns once and Heresys a few times. I can't imagine Heresys of the same quality sounding better than properly installed Khorns. Heresy DID get it's name honestly, I suppose.)
  15. What is a stoopid question? Noobs and vets are treated alike around here so chime in any time. Someday you might find yourself driving 1000 miles one way for unfinished birch Cornwalls and wonder "What the heck am I doing?" But maybe not. But one thing we like around here is pictures - LOTS of pictures. There are lots of nice systems here backed by brains and good ears. It's a virtual audo pub, of sorts. Did I say "pub?" Is the Horns Bar open?
  16. Michael Spinks vs. Mike Tyson comes to mind. Gone in 90 seconds. Mike Tyson received an estimated $22 million and Leon Spinks $13.5 million. Anyone want to prorate that into seconds?
  17. I once had an Adcom 555 driving Polk SDA. I don't understand how Polk did it - something with the crossovers. They had four 6" woofers with a passive radiator. Definitely had deep, liquid, MUSICAL bass. I once read an incident where the Polk top of the line SDA speakers would sooner knock themselves over instead of blowing. Howz dat for movin air?!
  18. Waaaay OT BUT... McCartney on Hey Jude. It actually works in with the slow drive into the climax...the SCREAM. Screams should be musical and well-timed, IMO. Anyone can just stand and scream their bloody head off.
  19. Nobody played syncopated rhythms like Bonzo. I hear that his son has tried to carry the torch. Maybe. Bonham's inspirations are hard to place. Maybe he is an original. I've never gone ga-ga over a rock star. But, when it came to drum majestry, Bonham ruled the stage. Others played around him with their own prowess. But that signature beat that seemed as natural as breathing to Bonzo, I think, put LZ in the supergroup rating. JPJ was a studio bass player. Plant was a great singer in his own right. And Page is due his respect. But if you ain't got a great drummer, the group can sound like any other garage band. LZ was not the same after his demise. They took on an almost feigned surreal overtone. Who can tell me the name of the replacment drummer? I rest my case. LZ was a great blues/rock band. Perhaps the greatest. Was Bonzo really a pig farmer?

  21. Heresy's (should be Heresy loudspeakers) Loadspeaker (huh?) Capital "W" in Whopping (should be l.c. w) Sub-whoofer (should be subwoofer) Two(2) (should be Two#(2) ) Stained Pecah/Hickory (one or the other) Vintage HiFi at it's FINEST! (No, it is not and "it's" should be "its." No reserve auction beginning at $549 with BIN at $599 - that's funny! That was fun. Now let's find Waldo!
  22. I've a D-75 but no klipsches. I DID have a pair of Quartets but can not think anything SS would ever sound good on those dental drills except for HT. I guess I need a donation of Cornwalls for a listening test.
  23. ---------------- Any one own a C6 Corvette ---------------- With or without the BOSE system? ---------------- No, 2.5 seconds fron 0-60 is a silly statement, even for a leigerfelter twin turbo. Simply outrageous. Read my earlier post. ---------------- Bugatti Veyron.
