  1. nothing. Christmas came early with a 42" panasonic plasma and 62" Toshiba DLP. I'm temporarily on probation from the minister of finance (my wife).
  2. I didn't have anything else to say. I'm at my uncle's and he has all this. Can't get much better than this unless it was actually on.
  3. Sorry. Yes I meant the RFs did sound much better than the Paradigm studio 100s, even though they were powered by a receiver that was 1/2 the price. I did not by the yamaha, as I was already happy with what I had. I'm just surprised by the number of people who say this speaker is harsh, given how i heard it A/B'd with what is a very laid back/warm sounding Paradigm. I should disclaim that I have a bias for a brighter sound, not harsh, but bright. I feel the need to boost the treble slightly on my tube amps, where on my solid state I'm pretty flat (except on bad CD recordings where I drop it 2db beginnning around 10k). Thanks for correcting me. RFs definately better than Pardigms, side by side, NOT harsh!
  4. I auditioned the RF7 side by side vs the Paradigm Studio 100 and again side by side vs the Def tech (forget the model, but about the same cost). It was at 2 different klipsh dealers (both very good and helpful. In both cases the klipsh came out on top from both an openness and clarity perspective. The RF vs Paradigm both used receivers and they were different. The Studio 100's were on a denon (5802 or 4802, I forget) and the RFs were on a Yamaha (about 1/2 the cost of the denon). I've owned yamaha previously and was surprised at how well the yamaha performed. The RF did not sound harsh at all vs what is a very laid back/warm speaker (studio 100). Now, this was a very large room (25x35) but remember being surprised in that the RF did not sounded much better, even with the much less expensive receiver. Based on these 2 comparisons (and already having 10 years of experience w/ my amp brand (adcom) and klipsch, I bought them. Never been happier. I will soon want to get the crossover upgrade, as there is a lot of positive talk about this.
  5. Not the 2.1 amp, but I have the matching 2.0 dts/dd processor/preamp and it mates with klipsh very well. I use adcom amps. The build quality on the preamp is very good. I have no experience with the power amp, unfortunately.
  6. Russ is right. Bright is not a negative term. To one person, an amp characterized as bright by others sounds perfect. That same person may veiw a warm amp as too laid back or dark. I think a lot of it may depend on what type of sound you grew up on. I'm in the brighter camp and reading this review lends me to believe the carver amp would sound great to my ears, but I'm not in the market for an amp right now. In my auditions, I thought the B&Ks were to warm. I do agree they are excellent amps, but too warm for my taste.
  7. My uncle still has the Patrician, but its the Patrician 800, not the one pictured. It uses the 30 inch woofer as opposed to the 18 inch mentioned. I have a copy of the owners manual, which states it goes down to 15 cycles. I haven't heard it in 5-6 years, but with his MC240 and various Mac preamps, it really sings with no effort. Truly no sub is needed with those. He pairs it with a Stereon 850, which shares the same upper drivers, without the bass horn (goes down to 100). He bought all of his stuff new back then and kept it all.
  8. 2nd the david gilmour meltdown. Great accoustic concert. The bass on some of those songs is stunning for accoustic. This is an exceptional recording.
  9. Dell has a 42 inch plasma HD built in, 1024x768 contrast2300:1, brightness 420, 160 degree angle. I don't know if the above rate, but its only $2999 delivered free in 3-5 days. Sounded inexpensive when I stumbled across it. I don't own one.
  10. J.4. That works? That has got to be the easiest solution possible for sub placement. I think I have a descent spot now, but I'll give that a whirl. That's what they should stick in owners manuals. Very nice and helpful, real world answer.
  11. I sometimes use and adcom passive unit for pure two channel listening. I really like it. It allows recording/dubbing, and has video switching. It makes a great unit to tell A/B preamps and to see what they add as a signature to the raw amp. I'de like to have a multi channel one, like the one referred to above. Very nice.
  12. I don't think its illegal to say aztec sounds better than klipsh, which is essentially what I remember the add saying. Its purely subjective. If this is illegal, car companies are in big trouble as they are always saying "safety crash rated better that a volvo" or "faster than a audi TT" etc. The original add didn't make me think he was selling something as a klipsh speaker.
  13. could something like this, with the right driver and amp, be turned into a subwoofer with very high output? Or, is the cabinet design/build of something of this vinage not conducive to what a sub would require?
  14. chuckears, a work around to use the sub for 2 channel and 5 channel without going thru your dsp modes would be to use a router (like a dbx). I'm doing this. I have the Preamps LFE out going to one input on the dbx, and I have the preamp's mains split, with one going to the dbx input 2 and the other going to the main amps. Then, from the dbx I have the signal going to the sub. If I'm listening to content with LFE output, I use dbx input 1. This routes only the LFE to the sub (I then have the subs lopass all turned to capture all of the LFE's signal). If I'm listening to two channel I select dbx input 2. THis sends only the main to the sub for music. SInce I'm sending a full signal to the mains as well, I set the sub's lopass at about 60, which blends well for me. Your adding another piece in the chain, but if its a hi quality piece and its just for signals of 100 and below, it's probably not audible. They're probably pretty cheap on ebay. I use the 400xg. It's not really what it was made for, but it work great and quickly lets you "move the wires around" without moving them. Just a thought.
  15. Went to Sound Pro in Indy in 1989 or 90 to replace my Infinity Qa's. The salesman suggested the Heresy's or the FOrte's. I couldn't believe the sound that came out of the Heresy's. The Forte's didn't surprise me simply due to their size. But given the almost bookshelf size of the Heresy's, my buddy and I kept walking over to the Forte's to make sure it wasn't them playing. I was hooked. (and still have those Heresy's (2's that is).
  16. ---------------- On 3/4/2005 7:23:35 PM DrWho wrote: i wonder how many people here have even heard both lines in the same environment so as to justify their opinions... When operating within their thresholds, I dare say both manufactures (make that any manufacture) all sound "identical". The differences one might hear and even prefer are best attributed to a different set of distortions that better fits one's particular taste in music (and the recording quality typical of that genre). So basically it's a process of choosing the most favorable distortion... So when it comes down to it, I would therefore choose functionality over quality when it comes to recievers (especially when working within a price range). If you're really after quality, then you should be busting out the seperates. for the sake of your debate at work, i vote for the denon (sorry mike) ---------------- If its a matter of picking distortions, I choose Social Distortion. It really sounds live on klipsch.
  17. I understand the free market system, and it is bearing out that the public will not pay these prices. This is exactly why people are downloading music, and buying pirated material. CD sales growth is stagnant or declining, the companies are going for a couple sound bites per cd and their customers are choosing other methods. I think its the record companies that don't understand the freemarket. They believe they have a monopoly and they don't...anylonger. You don't see a huge demand in pirated books do you? They must understand the free market and don't gouge the customer. I can't feel sorry for an industry as ignorant as they are. I buy a combination of new and used media, so yes I'm part of the problem I suppose. But my point is we shouldn't feel sorry for them, should we?
  18. Wow. 2 cones and a horn. Just like an RF7. I had to say that.
  19. I've used a dbx system router for a similar purpose...to switch between to separate preamps to the same power amps so it was done via RCA connectors. I could not tell a difference in sound quality when it was in or out of the chain.
  20. They wonder why we hate them so much. Its stuff like this that forces people to pirate this stuff. Good for the piraters if this is what the media companies will do.
  21. Colin, you mention a survey of 41 subs, do you have the link to this survey. I'de like to see it. I have the Legacy Audio Deep Impact and can vouch for its authority and more important its ability to blend in well with music. I'de like to see this survey. Thanks in advance.
  22. If klipsh pulled the synergy, reference and promedia line, they would probably need to increase the cost of the heritage line by (probably)300% and lay off over 90% of the work force. Then afterward, go out of business. Is this what your recommending? I too would like to see better distribution, but in all reality its 10x as good as other high end speaker manufactureres. How far do you have to drive to buy JMLabs, or Sonas, or Avante Garde, etc?
  23. I had to replace a Sovetec tube, when I did I think I replaced both (on a mono amp). If one of my telefunken's went out I would have tried to perform mouth to mouth.
  24. yae, the camera angles on the mains are only 2 dimentional so you can't see the 8 inches. Very strategic...
