  1. Bummer on the 3pack D-Rex. It ordered of the website last night. It said it was back order and would ship in a week or so. I hope I still get it.
  2. I was able to find many superbit titles on bestbuy.com. I just entered the title I was looking for, and then selected the superbit one from the numerous ones that matched the lookup. I ended up having 2 of them shipped, and picked 5 of them up at my local store. Pretty good price for SB DVD's especially the 3 pack of 5th element\desperado\crouching.
  3. My wife works for a company that sells Klipsch speakers, and she gets 60% everything they sell including Aragon amps. I got 2 complete surround setups thru her work (ref line). I wish I had more money. Oh, and shipping was free, direct from Klipsch.

    HDTV

I have had my Toshiba 57H94 for a few weeks now receiving HD signals via chimney mounted antenna. I get about 9 HD channels, and the picture (and sound) is great. DVD viewing at 480p is also awesome. If you can receive any HD signals, I highly recommend it. Even if all you do is watch a bunch of DVD's, the larger screen (and better picture) make it worth it also. The picture quality on standard def signals is not great, but it is still enjoyable.
  5. I am running Marantz with my Ref 3 speakers, and I enjoy the sound for music and movies. I didn't know the SRX500 series was coming out. I will have to see if an upgrade is in my future.
  6. Hey picky, not to be picky, but how about some more photos of the completed project either here, or on your website. That room is sooooo cool. I'd love to see more.
  7. Sick, I upgraded from the KSW-12 to the RW-12, and there was a vast impovement. I highly recommend the upgrade from the KSW. (whether it be to a Klipsh or SVS, or different brand). The RW-12 works very well with my Ref 3 line of speakers. (The KSW-12 is now used in my family room with a quintet system).

  9. ---------------- On 9/13/2004 10:41:42 AM colterphoto1 wrote: Now I'm REALLY confused. When you say rear channels, are you meaning the CENTER rear? SO that in 6.1 you get discrete 'side' rear channels, but 1 or 2 (matrixed) 'center' rear channels? I guess that way if a distinctly rear sound went across the back soundstage it would be discretely left, then matrixed mono center, then discretely right. Does this make sense. If my RXV2400 DOLBY DIGITAL receiver has all mono matrixed rear (or side?-I find this term confusing) channels, I'm taking it back cause it's no better than dolby pro-logic. ---------------- No need to take you unit back. It is just a matter of understanding some of the terms that are used, and how each format (DD/DTS) handles the "creation" of the rear channels. Concerning terminology of the rear speaker(s). I have heard these called the surround rear (6.1) of rears (7.1), or the center back (6.1) or center backs (7.1). Your unit is capable of utilizing all the current audio formats available for DD and DTS. For a DVD that is encoded with just 5.1 (Center, fronts, side surrounds, and LFE), your unit should be capable of creating a matrix mix of the info from the existing channels of sound, and produce sound from the rears (one or both depending on if you are running a 6.1 or 7.1 setup). If you are listening to a DD-EX DVD, then the rear channel is already coded (mixed/matrixed) onto the DVD itself, and the info is relayed to the rear surround speakers. (do keep in mind that the same signal is going to both the rear speakers (in a 7.1 setup)). If you are listening to a DTS-ES DVD, then you will have a discrete rear surround channel, but there is only one discrete rear channel of information on the DVD. The pre/pro or receiver will send this same discrete signal to both the rear surrounds.
  10. DD-EX is called 6.1, but keep in mind that the rear channel is not a discrete channel, it is a matrix of the 2 side surrounds. Only DTS-ES has a discrete back channel.
  11. Regarding the "discrete" rear channels. There is currently no discrete back left and right material. (I.e. even for a true 6.1 discrete mix DTS ES, the 2 back channels are the same). DD EX applies a matrixed mix (of the side surrounds) for the rear surrounds (be them a sinlge (6.1) or dual (7.1) setup). Dolby Prologic IIx also provides the ability to offer a matrixed rear channel(s).
  12. I currently have the Marantz SR4300, I also am running a 2 channel system with a NAD 2200 amp. I have not heard any of the "modern" NAD HT receivers, but I am sure they sound quite good. If you are looking at the Marantz SR7400, accessories for less has a refurbished unit (they are authorized reseller) for $669.00. This is a great price for the 7400. I may try to see if I can swing one myself.
  13. Bill, I am still building my 5.1 music collection. Only about 15 disks thus far. Thus far I have found Yes:Fragile, Big Phat Band:Swinging for the Fences (a little strong on the surrounds), Steely Dan:2 against nature, Pink Floyd: DSOTM, and ELP: Brain Salad really good (to me) surround mixes.
  14. Well, I went ahead and ordered 2 RB-25's to act as my surrounds for DVD-A/SACD listening, and the result turned out good. I now get better imaging with the sound from the surrounds than with the RS-3ii's. I ended up installing the RB-25's directly below the RS-3ii's, and added a banana plug switch plate that allows me to manually switch speakers depending on the source. I still prefer the RS-3iis for movie viewing. I could not afford a fancy switcher, so I just "ham and egged" it as my dad would say.
  15. What finish do your 7's have? I would have to recommend the RB-35 as a better match than the RB-25, but it is hard to argue with the finish you want, and a cheaper price.
  16. I just got this SACD a few days ago, and it does sound good. I had read some mixed reviews, but I took the plunge anyway. They actually do 2 Zep covers: Battle of Evermore and Black Dog. They both sound good as does the whole concert.
  17. Bill, I actually am running a 6.1 setup. I have an RC3ii as my rear. I don't really feel the need for adding a 2nd rear at this time. As far as 5.1 music goes, I get no sound from the rear anyways, so I don't see rear speakers as part of the 5.1 music equation. I really don't have the space to accomodate 2 more rf3's in my listening room, so if I do decide to switch out the side surrounds, it will have to be with the RB series so I can get them on the wall and not on the floor.

    Shrek2

Well, my kids really got me on this one. They ended school last week, and we agreed that we would go see the movie this week. Turns out they went with their baby sitter to see it on Monday. They said it was great, but now I am torn as to wether I will see it in the theatre, or wait for DVD. I guess they wouldn't mind seeing it again. I know it would be cooler on the big screen.
  19. Well, I did end up getting it at Blockbuster for $12.99, (part of their DVD trade-in program). I will certainly get the 4 disk set in the fall. I have to have the DTS and extended scenes. I have watched a couple time already. It is really a great way to tie up the (movie) story. I even started reading the first book again today. When I finish the trilogy, I will have to watch the three movies and wonder at the ability of Peter Jackson to recreate so much of what I envisioned Tolkiens world to be like. (Haven't read the books since high school, and that was many years ago.)
  20. I am currently running the ref 3 line with rf3ii's up front, and rs3iis for rear surrounds. This works fine for movies, but I was wondering if the 2 rear channels of high rez music (sacd, dvd-A) would sound better from a conventional speaker design (as opposed to the WDST of the rs3iis). I am considering mounting RB-25's or RB-35s on my side walls, under the rs3iis, and having an A/B type swith to control the rear speakers. This would allow me to switch the rear speakers depending on the source material. Any thoughts on if this would improve the overall experience of the high rez music? Also, would the 25 or 35 work better with the rf3iis?
  21. I am torn about buying the 2 disk set. I know I will buy the 4 disk in the late fall, but I don't think I can wait that long. I have seen ROTK twice in the theatre, and I just may have to plunk down the 15.99 at BB to get it. (I was in BB this weekend looking at SACD and DVD-A's, which they have stashed in the back near the warehouse part of the store, and I noticed numerous display cases all loaded with the ROTK disks ready for Tuesday. I asked an employee, and he said I would have to wait til tues. I bet some of those employees got their copies early...)
  22. I am running a 6.1 setup, I have both a RC-3II and an RC-35. I have tried alternating them between the front center and the rear center. I am happy with both of them. I would get which ever one was cheaper (provided they both sounded okay to you).
  23. I also run 6.1, it is really noticable on DVD's recorded with a discrete center back channel. I usually force the center back channel on 5.1 material (although not with music), and I feel that it does add a fuller sound.
  24. I have the quintet system, and I am using a KSW-12, it sounds good, but last weekend, I hooked my RW-12 to it (borrowed from my main system), and it sounded very good. I am sure the RW-10 would sound great with the quintets.
