  1. Thanks Rick88 for the link. I had actually done everything in the instructions except for Post. I thought that I should be able to see the photo before posting it, but that doesn't seem to be the case. So I tried using post from the options tab and it put the photo in, only it's all the way at the bottom, not where I would have preffered it to be. Perhaps that's the only way it works. I also tried to insert the photo using the 'Insert' button on the Compose toolbar. Couldn't get it to work. Any ideas on that? Thanks again, Rod
  2. I am going to try going two way with Paudio PH-4525 horns with BMD-750 drivers in our 1958 Klipshorns and LaScala Clone Center.I need to work out the mounting of the new horns and also how best to make a new grill for the LS and possibly new ones for the Khorns. I bought some new black grill cloth from Bob Crites and want to use it on all three tophats. Here's a photo of the upper section of one of our Khorns. (Hope this photo posting works as it doesn't show in my 'Compose'.) I had origionally planned to mount the new horns from the front about an inch and a half back from the front of the cabinet. It would be mounted on a new motorboard with the horn flange being on the motorboard front. This would allow the same grills to be used as on the Khorns. A few questions have arisen: 1. Is it important to have the horn front as close as possible to the cabinet front, or does that matter? 2. Do the newer Khorns (post 1958) use a different grill design than mine? Mine have small vertical wood strips that may block some sound. 3. Does anybody have a photo of the newer grills from the inside? Thanks very much. Rod
  3. I haven't posted any photos since about 03 and don't seem to be getting anywhere. I first tried going to Options in Compose to add a single photo. It showed the file saved but it didn't appear in my Compose or Preview screens. I then uploaded the photo to Photobucket and did an Insert photo. Still didn't show up. I'm wondering if perhaps they show up in the actual published post but not in the Write a New Post part. So here I'm doing an insert Image from PhotoBucket: And nothing shows. So I'm going to post this and if there is not an included photo above I would sure appreciate any tips as to what I may be doing wrong. Thanks, Rod
  4. Dave - I absolutely love your comment on it sounding "Like the victim of a transporter accident". Very clever! In answer to the original question - YES! Cheers, Rod
  5. Thanks for sharing the article. I haven't done any furniture refinishing but have done a lot of boat varnishing interior and exterior. Steel wool is an absolute no-no on a boat, especially on the exterior. When moisture hits any residue it turns to rust! So when someone wants to use steel wool for boat work I recommend bronze wool as being non ferous it doesn't rust. This quality would also make it better for speaker cabinets as the magnets can't attract it. But I still dont like the idea of it's residue possibly getting near the speakers. Your suggestion of the Scotchbrite pads is a good one. A lot of the boat pro varnishers have switched to them. Just not sure if they are available in fine enough grades for furniture refinishing. Rod
  6. Rudy - You always inspire me! Rod
  7. I would get a 4000 for each sub. Regardless of the number they used these amps don't put out 4000 watts. You are filling a large area in your shop. Did you get my PM? Rod
  8. Not familar with the Yamaha equipment. I do know that many folks are using these subs with the Behringer DCX2496 EQ and EP4000 amps and getting very satisfactory results. I am. Behringer equipment is looked down upon in the pro audio world. It's built for a price and doesn't seem to always hold up well under heavy duty full time usage. Our usage is very different. Be careful with amp specs. Many maufacturers play a lot of specmanship and Behringer is certainly in this league. The EP4000 doesn't get anywhere near 4000 watts in most applications. You want to also be careful of amplifier impedance. I believe the DTS-10 is rated at 4 ohms, but I believe at certain frequencies it can dip well below that. My suggestion is to stick with an amp that has been succesfully used with this sub, or one that is recommended for this application by someone more knowledgable than I. Rod
  9. You aren't wasting any time. Way to go! And it sounds like more than one sub. Have you yet decided which amps and EQs? You will have a lot of flexibilty with the multiple EQs. Re the location: Try to stay open minded and flexible. Sometimes the best locations are not the ones you planned. You will find the the DTS-10 can have a variety of orientations. The output grill can be located on either side of the cabinet as well as the speaker access hatch. Some find it best standing tall while others find it best on it's side. Some have even had it a foot from a wall and aimed at the wall. Weird! Best to plan on experimenting. Do you know about REW, the free measurement software? You need a calibrated mic with it and then you can take frequency sweeps and all kinds of other acoustic measurements. It's invaluable in setting the EQs and helping to determine best locations. It will also help you to see your progress if you get into doing some acoustical room treatments. Sorry but can't help on the caps. On second thought - I'd stick with what Bob Crites is suggesting. He really knows Klipsch crossovers and usually has very good value. Enjoy, Rod
  10. The left one! We live in Canada so not familar with US prices. But a quick Google check pulled up great US prices at Musicians friend - about 50% off MSRP. (Know nothing about the business.) EP4000 $370.00 and DCX2496 $300. You would want one amp per Sub. Ideally it might be nice to have one DCX per sub, but you could probably get away with one DCX for multiple subs. Perhaps someone with multiple subs could chime in here. Rod
  11. Another very happy Khorn/DTS-10 user here. We have one in a small room - 19' x 12' x 7' 3". Use a Behringer EP4000 Amp and DCX 2496 EQ. Will soon be trying the MiniDSP as I'll be using it in our Active Crossover setup, and it will allow a high pass filter at around 11 or 12 Hz. If you like to dig low and loud and clean this is the sub to mate with your Khorns! Have Fun. Rod
  12. You are in luck - that is if you like a bargain and don't mind doing a little fun work. The Danley DST-10s have just become available (until September) as kits again. I believe they are about $1,050. Two, or 4 of them will certainly rock your shop! Get one or more Behringer EP4000 amps. EQ is required with these beasts due to their irregular frequency response. Many of us use the Behringer DCX2496.You also may want to consider the MiniDSP as it will allow you to set a HPF between 10 and 15 Hz. The DTS-10s can be EQd to be flat down to about 11 or 12 Hz. We have one of these in a small room with Klipschorns and soon a LaScala clone center. Very pleased with the Danley. I don't think you could possibly get more bang for your buck if you really want to dig deep and loud. And clean! There's a huge thread on AVS about these. Have Fun! Rod
  13. I've ordered the grill cloth and woofer for the LS clone from Bob Crites. He was not familar with the PAudio 4525 horn or the Goldwood GM-450PB, nor have I been able to find anybody that new both. What I did find out from talking to a speaker vendor is that the Paudio and Goldwood are both copies of the JBL 4525 horn. In fact one speaker vendors site says this about the PAudio: "Compares favorably to the JBL 4525". From what I can gather the Paudio and Goldwood are very similar so I went ahead and ordered 3 of them for our fronts. They will fit in our Khorn tops and new LS Clone top. Thanks for your input here. Rod
  14. Hi Dave, Thaks very much for the response and suggestions. Looks like Bob has the woofer and grill cloth I need. Still wondering if anyone has used the Goldwood horn with the PAudio driver, or if they have any thoughts on it. Note that these horns are 2" and I believe are CD. I'm sure they aren't as good as the huge Jubilee horns but should still (hopefully) be a good upgrade. Yes it is "Quite a project". And a lot of new stuff to get with crossovers and extra amps. Rod
  15. I have just acquired an empty LaScala Clone to be used as a Center with our 2 Khorns. I need to select several items and would appreciate input from this esteemed group of people (except maybe JacksonBart!). The 2 Khorns and LS clone will each be 2 way and have Active Crossovers, probably using the MiniDsp. For HF drivers I have purchased BM-D750s as a result of Rudy81s successful pairng with the PAudio PH-4525 horn. I had been planning to use the PH-4525, but have read that the Goldwood GM-450PB may be an identical copy and for a good bit less. (Want to put a link here but don't see how.) Parts Express has them for $49.25. Do any of you have experience with these and or feel they are a suitable substitute? For LS woofer it has been suggested I use the Eminence Kappa-15C which is available at Parts Express for $117.97. I have noticed several people are happy with Bob Crites woofers which are similar priced, but apparently a little wood has to be cut away for installation. I'd appreciate any thoughts here. I'll also be needing some grill cloth. My 1958 Khorns still have what is probably the original grill cloth. They are kind of a tan color and have a nice vintage look, but one of them looks like it may have been water stained. (Don't know how as the Khorn doesn't look it.) My 1985 Heresy's which will become the sides have black and I'm thinking of putting black on the 3 fronts. Any suggestions for cloth to use? Thanks very much for any answers that you may have. Rod
  16. Hi Chris, They just arrived here in Canada. They are beautiful! Have to get new grillcloth for our 1958 Khorns and finish building our LaScale Clone center before we can put them on. I know they are just going to add the proper finishing touches for our speakers. Thanks for doing such a wonderful job on them and for your unique and sturdy shipping method. Cheers, Rod
  17. They're beautiful! Can't wait to get them. Thanks a lot. Rod
  18. Pete, Lets start by trying to clear up some terms. You mentioned DACs at $500 and soundcards (internal or external) at $300. The terms 'DAC' & 'Soundcard' are often used interchangably. I think it's a bit of a misnomer to call an external DAC a soundcard, but it's done all the time now. So I'm not sure what you had in mindbetween the two. Anyway my first DAC was an EMU 0404-USB which is an external. (Don't confuse it with the 0404PCI which is a whole different animal.) For the money it is totally amazing - especially with our Khorns and Danley DTS-10 sub. Do some Google on it and you will find lots of reviews, mostly favorable. Then we decided to go to a 5.1 system for movies and of course the 0404USB wont work. So we got an Asus Essence ST internal soundcard with an H2 daughter card. It will handle up to a 7.1 system. I have not A/Bd the two DACs but I'm just as happy with the Essense ST card. It also has sockets for the opamps so you can tweak the sound a bit by 'rolling' your opamps. I'm happy with ours the way it came. Either of those DACs will fall well within your budget. If you are ever going to use the card for more than 2 channel listening you may want to seriously consider the Essence ST. You could get just the basic card now and then later add the H2 daughter card for multi channel. We use JRiver Media Center 15 for ripping and playback software. It's wonderful! Among the best ripper if you use it's 'secure' setting. When it finds errors it will keep re-reading trying to get a good read. It's organizing ability for your music collection I believe is head and shoulders above any others. That said to use some of the advanced features can take some head scratching! They have a very helpful forum. I believe it's SQ is up at the top of the heap. Before you chose player software though you really need to settle on the computer platform - PC or Mac. I think these days they are equally good when using the right software. I have read a few times that Itunes on a PC is not very good SQ wise. So I suggest JRiver on the PC and Itunes on the Mac. And if you really want to blow your budget get Amarra on the Mac. I believe it works in conjunction with Itunes. Re the long time to rip. We have ripped hundreds of CDs and hundreds of movies to our Windows Home Server maching. I just did it over a period of time. Plop a CD in and start the process. If the computer is at your desk you can do some other work while the ripping is going on. Believe me it is so well worth the effort. We have available in either our HT room or living room all of our music, movies and photos. And they are all so accesible that you will start to listen to a lot of stuff that you haven't in a long time. BTW we don't have a receiver. We go straight from the PC to our power amps. Works great for us! Have fun and good luck with it. Rod
  19. Bad news on the support front. Microsoft has their 'Vail' new version of WHS in Beta. Unfortunately they are dropping Drive Extender. That's the part of WHS that allows us to install any size hard drive and it will automatically be added to the drive 'pool'. Rumor has it that once this version is out that support for our version will not go for very many years. The only concern there for me is security downloads. Rod
  20. Dave, Congratulations on getting a WHS system running. I think it's a great way to go! I built a new dual core machine about a year ago and love it. We keep all our media on it: over 300 movies, many recorded TV shows, probably 500 CDs worth of music, and about 10,000 photos. We use 2 media player programs: SageTV and Jriver MC15. We use Sage for all but music. I think MC15 is better in the audio department - they have done a lot in the last year to make many improvements in audio. And their database is extremely versatile for organizing your music. For all other media SageTV is working wonderfully for us. We recently got a 55" Panasonic Plasma and hope to soon get going with Blue Rays. There is even a plugin for Sage that allows us to link to our Adobe Photoshop Elements catalog and do slideshows based on photo tags and collections. We have an Asus Essence ST soundcard in our Client PC. It is providing 5.1 (can do 7.1) for video and 2.1 for critical music listening. We are going straight from the soundcard to our power amps - no receiver! Our 1958 Khorns are very happy with this setup and so are we! The above system is in our HT room. In our living room we just have a very modest setup (non Klipsch) and are using a SageTV Extender. All media on the WHS is also available there. Both systems now have good WAF and are operated with Harmony 100 remotes. A very real advantage to the WHS arrangement is being able to inexpensively add an extender in any room with a TV. All media is then available there. Rod
  21. We love our Danley DTS-10 tapped horn sub especially for pipe organ. But it's huge and no longer available as a kit - only prefinished. Check out Chase Home Theater's new line of sealed subs. They are getting very positive press in the forums and are quite reasonably priced. Should be the right size for your room, and they seem to dig low. Have fun. Rod
  22. I'll soon be integrating Blu Ray in our HTPC so don't yet have direct experience. But I believe some of the confusion may come from the fact that many (all?) BD's have both HD audio and the lesser quality audio formats that are on DVD's. If your playback system is not properly decoding the HD format you may be just getting the lower quality DVD quality audio. Rod
  23. With our Khorns I definitely notice a drop in low end at lower volumes. And this is using a variety of amps. The Fletcher Muson Curve shows the perceived dropoff at both ends of the frequency spectrum during low listening volumes. Most older preamps had a "Loudness" gain control that was designed to offset this human problem. In recent years any form of tone control/equalization has become 'bad' and most of these functions are no longer available. If you listen a lot at low levels and have any form of tone control or equalization available I suggest that it isn't all bad to use some bass boost. Rod
  24. Thanks for the explanation, but the only part I really understand is the 400 hz cancellation. Why doesn't the 7' wavelength (1/4 wave?) need coupling to the walls? It seems this is because the bin could be quite a ways out from the walls and still be a small portion of the wavelength? But I don'tknow where to go from there with the explanation. This is all quite interesting as we keep hearing on the forum about sealing the Khorn snugly to the corner for the best low end. Or am I totally misinterpreting what you are saying? On second read you did say that the upper base suffers more than the lower. But the lower still suffers - the question is how much? And while we are at it what would happen if the Khorn was basically free standing, ie several feet from each wall, as many now do with their more conventional speakers? Rod
  25. I've read this before and have difficulty understanding why the upper bass suffers more than the deep bass. Rod
