  1. Better get your tube gear in his queue soon. Craig is another year older! Happy birthday to our favorite solder slinger.[<)]
  2. Wow. Look who the cat dragged in. Call me sometime Travis. Its been WAY too long! I've owned both the MX110 and the C22 (and a couple others) and I agree 100% with Travis. I much preferred the C22. Good luck Charles.
  3. Again, what Josh and Dean said. Those of us who know Craig well understand he's a crotchety old geezer who would give you the shirt off his back. Those of us who know him well and have been on this forum a long time also understand he was giving sound advice to the OP. We've had really bad luck with some other techs here in the past. Find me a customer of Craig's who doesn't understand how lucky we are to have him here.
  4. ****what dean and josh said**** BTW - Craig is not out looking for business. This is his way of helping and nobody else here comes close.
  5. Nothing to fess up to. You haven't heard my systems and you don't have my ears. I play it all and prefer the sound of vinyl in 2 of my 3 systems.
  6. I buy 1 SACD/CD for every 50 or so LPs although my last purchase was a CD I picked up at Best Buy while killing time last week. Like Mr. Lindsey, vinyl just sounds way better on my Khorn system. I don't even keep a CD player with that system anymore. I moved my TD124 from the family room Cornwall system (which seems to love digital) to the beach house. That beach house system has both SACD and vinyl but the vinyl always sounds better to my ears. Love CDs in the car though.[]
  7. Hey Trev, It's "I'd" and "You're." Also, that is clearly a run on sentence. We only expect correct spelling and grammar from those who criticize other member's (or is it members'?) spelling and grammar. Have a nice day.
  8. Have you settled yet? I have a TD145 I will practically give you. I needs a little TLC but not much. Shoot me a pm if you're interested.
  9. My '80 Cornwalls (purchased new) always sounded terrific to me. After joining this forum, I was talked into installing new crossovers. At first I wasn't all that impressed. I listened for a few weeks then put the old networks back in. It wasn't until I put the originals back in that I realized how badly they needed replacing. I'd enjoy them for a while, get used to the sound, then play around with crossovers. BTW - The insides of Cornwalls almost always look brand new, even after 30-40+ years. Edit: Where are my manners? Welcome to the forum!
  10. Nice. Have you tried placing one side flush against the wall (making them point 45 deg toward the listening position)? The bass would improve significantly. You'd be taking advantage of half of a corner instead of none at all.
  11. Hey Dtel, Look at our join dates and post counts. Kinda creepy...... Congrats on 10k Fritz.
  12. Sounds like banana plugs (you can buy them at any radio shack to attach to the end of your speaker wires) but if you unscrew the caps, you can still use bare wire. Unscrew them about 1/4 inch and you should see a hole to feed your wires through. If no hole, just wrap the bare wire around and re-tighten. BTW - Congrats. Glad you kept them! Edit: Straight from the manual.... CONNECTING YOUR LOUDSPEAKER Your loudspeakers are equipped with positive (Red) and negative (Black) connection terminals, on the rear or side of the cabinet. These correspond to the positive and negative terminals on the appropriate channel (left, right, etc.) of your amplifier and will accomodate bare wire, spade lugs or banana plugs (See Figure 4). • All speakers in your system must be connected in phase with the positive speaker terminal connected to the positive amplifier terminal. Repeat this for the negative speaker and amplifier terminals. Most speaker wire has distinguishing markings on the insulation of one of the conductors to assist in correct hookup. • Use 16-gauge (AWG), two conductor, copper wire at a minimum and larger gauge wire for longer runs. The connection terminals on your loudspeaker will accommo date bare wire, spade terminals or banana type plugs. • Caution: With all connection types take care that there is no contact between the positive and negative terminals at the speaker and amplifier. Damage to your equipment may result! (See Figure 4.)
  13. Michael, My 124 is dead quiet. What cables are you using? Mine have a ground wire that attaches from the base of the tonarm - there's a small screw next to the rca jacks - to the ground on your amp/preamp/whatever (I believe the cables are made specifically for the 124) but I've never heard of a crackling sound due to lack of ground. It's always a buzz or hum. There are a couple Thorens gurus around here that you might want to email. Allan Songer comes to mind. Mike Lindsey has done a lot with his 124 so he might be able to offer an opinion. BTW - It makes sense that it would be louder on your more efficient Jubs (but I'm sure you knew that). Good luck buddy. I feel for ya. Don't give up! I have a piece of gear I've been tempted to smash with a sledgehammer more than once (think of fruit). It currently sounds terrific.
  14. Hey Deano - More prayers and positive vibes sent your way from the east coast. Gary
  15. Congrats Guy! I've also been busy playing with my new toy (grandaughter).[]
  16. What's up Guy(s)? My second job out of college was with Fairchild Communications and Electronics Co. It was mostly defense work like building dashboards for military aircraft, etc. I had no idea he ever built audio equipment. Very cool Dave. Keep us posted on your progress.
  17. I was going to suggest selling the Grace and SME to help fund the better arm. Good luck and congrats on your new rig.
  18. Those who think this is a good idea, especially on a long-term basis, have obviously never tried it themselves! Not that I would know from experience or anything.....just what I've heard from friends.[]
  19. All you can do is listen and decide for yourself. Heritage speakers have a sound of their own. Just make sure to bring your own music, something you are very familiar with. I wouldn't be surprised if the Heresys ended up in your dorm right next to the KGs.
  20. No. Just replace the fuse. Go to your local RS and get a package of 5 (or whatever quantity they sell). They're only a few bucks. If it continues to blow, then you can begin to worry about why. Sometimes it just happens.
  21. Michael - Have you played an LP yet? He definitely made setup easier for himself by installing the bolts upside down. Much easier to make adjustments. If you decide you can't live with the looks and have to replace with shorter bolts right-side up (or down), setup will have to be completely re-done as the weighting and alignment will change when you take off the franken-bolts. If this guy is any good, it's probably going to sound just fine as-is. It's a very easy table to set up and I'm sure you could redo it with a little help over the phone. You can print an alignment tool from your computer but you will need a scale (a $25 Shure scale is fine if you don't already own one or you can borrow one from the guy who set it up or you can borrow my electronic scale (I'm happy to ship it to you on loan). I'd first ask the guy if he would mind swapping the bolts and re-aligning/re-setting the tracking weight. Also, ask him what he used to adjust the overhang. Print this thread if you decide to take it back to him so he can answer all our questions. That'll be sure to piss him off!![] However, the first thing you need to do is.....PLAY A RECORD and get back to us!!![] Just don't play a $100 record. Try a 50 cent record first.[] Maybe a little Pat Boone or Jim Nabors.[H]
  22. Michael, I had a Grado Black once upon a time but don't remember it looking strange mounted on my Thorens headshell. How does it sound? BTW - I originally had a Stanton 681EEE on my Technics SL1800. The Grado Black isn't a very expensive cart but should be an improvement if properly mounted. Sounds like you got a very fair deal assuming he knows what he's doing. TTs aren't as complicated as you might think. It's scary the first couple times trying to set one up because everything is so small and fragile. Maybe this guy will let you watch him when he sets up your Thorens??? Show us a picture of that cart!
