  1. Erik, Congrats on the project so far! Will be looking forward to seeing the pics and hearing your take on these sweet things! Dee
  2. BB, These are great looking amps. I'm pretty sure they are the same ones used to snap the photo in the classic Maxell "Blown Away" poster. If you use them for your Cornwalls, you'll have to get a new avatar. Dee

  4. Refinishing black La Scalas in anything other than black is one huge job. It's tough enough just to finish raw birch getting around inside the bass horn. Really tough with black. The idea of capitalizing on the depth of the black in the grain is a fascinating and creative solution. In fact, it's the only possible thing I could imagine w/o refinishing in black or going to veneer. I'd love to see pics of those projects. Dee
  5. So what exactly was it that PWK said about school?
  6. I've got an HK 430 for sale. It's in good shape, now after my brother in law electrical engineer opened the hood and replaced some internal fuses and replaced the tuner lights, cleaned the pots and knobs. When I bought it on Ebay, it came with only one channel running. Internal fuse was the problem. Creative solution on the nifty little back lights for the slide rule dial. Stock is a bulb that looks just like a fuse. Never had seen anything like that and with no hope of finding parts, we soldered the leads from lamps from RS to the old fixtures and replaced them in the case. Would need to get $75.00 for it. I know that cheaper can be found, but after probably paying too much for it in the first place, still at that price wouldn't be recovering my complete investment. Just need to move some stuff to a new home. If you should purchase it and find it to be unsatisfactory, you can send it back to me for a refund, less shipping of course. e-mail me with questions. Sorry don't have a pic to post. Dee
  7. It seems like a buyers market right now on La Scalas. I've got two pair I'd like to sell, but I'm going to wait and refinish them before selling. When there are six or eight pair on Ebay at the same time, it's bargain time!!! Dee
  8. Chris, That is definitely a bummer to come home and the 2 channel sounds like a pea thrasher. I could relate to what you said about getting out the 299 and cranking it up. I'd spent a few weeks giving a temporary home to a Rocket 88 and have also been enjoying some 2A3 Paramours while the 299 was dark. Started it up again and thought it is amazing that an 42 year old amp can sound as good as that. I'm running it right now on some Heresy's I just bought on Ebay. Not that I needed them, but they were cheaper than usual because of blown tweeters and since I had some on hand, just picked them up. Repaired and added binding posts on the back. The 299 is still impressive! Regards, Dee
  9. Gary, Where did you locate your Academy? Dee
  10. Lynn, Nice Khorn. You refinished those, right? Looks great! Dee
  11. Cyclone, Great looking center channel. Did you use the Heresy Crossover? Also, was wondering how you'd wire the pair of woofers? Dee
  12. Dan, On my measurements, the double banana plugs are on 3/4" centers. That ought to be close enough for government work. If I was drilling something precious, it wouldn't hurt to wait until you had the little rascals in hand. Regards, Dee
  13. In welcome to the forum, I should also say be careful not to click on "submit" twice. Sometimes the bbs software only appears to have locked up and missed your input. It actually moves at glacial speed and will faithfully double post if one double clicks!
  14. Welcome to the forum. I'm not sure if your candidate speakers are among those Best Buy is now carrying, but that makes it much more convenient to find Klipsch. Don't know how you could go wrong there. Careful shopping on Ebay can yield some excellent results, too. Regards, Dee
  15. It is odd that he would equip an amp with a feature which causes the sound to be unacceptable just so one could appreciate when it is operating in it's optimal mode. The switching on the Rocket 88, between triode and pentode is o.k., even cool. Variable feedback would have made sense, but this one leaves me scratching my head. Dee
  16. I'm sure this isn't as convenient as a switcher, but I do a fair amount of switching both at the amp end and on the speaker end. I just have an extra speaker cord, and using bananna plugs it's as easy as plugging and unplugging. Depending on your setup, it might be easier to change at the amp or the speaker. Regards, Dee

Within 6 months he'll have RF-7's. ---------------- No way will he sell his La Scalas in six months, unless his wife makes him because she can't get him out of the sweet spot in the listening room. After getting the ALK's Tom will have to find somebody to mow the lawn. Dee

The Foreplay has to much midrange gain, its making itelf very noticeable with the Scalas. This is really becoming a learning experience. Tom ---------------- Tom, What kind of configuration did you have to pick up on the Foreplay midrange issue? Is that an A/B between a straigt CD to power amp and CD to Power Amp via Preamp? Or just picking up on the sound? Might be a place to experiment with ALK's capacity for variable midrange attenuation, or whatever it's called. Dee

  20. www.vintagetubeservices.com Found this site interesting for several reasons: --Of course they sell vintage tubes, but they claim that there is a significant level of fraud and outright rebranding of "NOS" tubes sold on the market, often by dealers who just don't know the difference. --There are pages on the history of vintage tube manufacturers with good pics, from the tube building process. --Their presentation of their own testing and evaluation process, including how they test when concerned for label authenticity. To the ears of a layman, it sounded pretty good. Of course, it could just be marketing to pay top prices for vintage tubes. Anybody have a take on this? Thanks, and best regards, Dee
  21. I sure had lots of good times with his amps. Sweet times.

  23. Interesting. My experience is like Craig's. Changed to La Scalas and ended up changing everything, except an old tuner that just sits in the rack anyway. Dee p.s glad to hear you've got ALK's on the way. When you get them, set up one first so you can A/B the stock and updated Lascala. You'll be grinnin like a mule eating briars. And with the Cary...
