Chet Baker....attn jazz guys, I need suggestions

Recommended Posts

So I've been coming to the realization that i need to round out my jazz collection with some Chet Baker

I have collected from trumpet players, just about all pre 75 Mies Davis, Freddie hubbard, Lee Morgan, Blue Mitchel, ....plenty of Dizzy, Satchmo, etc....but I know very little about Chet and west coast jazz....I guess that I would be mostly interested in the earlier works...and no vocals [:D]

So any suggestions of lp's , labels, pressings ..... would be greatly appreciated.......anybody got any they wish to part with???

Thanks

Chet was very prolific and a fast worker, once recording three albums in three days, IIRC, so his list of releases is really long. Here's what Wikipedia lists:

Great call on Jon Faddis....All I have of him is on a Oscar Perterson lp....but he has a great horn

Pretty much have given up on CD's even though i have a nice player....vinyl just floats my boat...it's like crack!!!

I know a dealer in toronto that has an original mint Chet Baker Sings....I'll call him back this weekend and see what the damage would be.... Time for another fix!

I'm a big Chet Baker fan and I would recommend you start with this one here: The Best of Chet Baker Sings: http://www.amazon.com/Best-Chet-Baker-Sings/dp/B000005HFH and not just because he does an excellent version of my wife's and my wedding song "Time After Time" although it couldn't hurt.

I would also take a shot at Chet Baker Plays the Best of Lerner and Loewe: http://www.amazon.com/Chet-Baker-Plays-Lerner-Loewe/dp/B000000Y7Y I think you will enjoy both of these records, they are great intros to his "West Coast Sound."

Thanks Stephan.....I have a line on a good copy of Best of Lerner and Loewe..........

Nu2toobs: I think that maybe it's the ritual in part...that just gets me so much more "involved with vinyl"....but all forms of digital playback just miss the mark with me.....I'd rather listen to a beat up copy of a great vinyl recording than a pristine CD any day......there are artists that just don't release to vinyl....ergo the $$$$ cd player, but I wind up mostly using it for my once weekly running of my vintage set up for 3-4 hours.......
