Keeping my rear cool (bed of truck, not my rear)

OK so as the subject states, I am trying to keep the bed of my truck, which has a cap on it, cool. I love to bring my dogs with me, and I love to keep my interior clean, hence my problem.

I have a leer cap, and all deep tinted windows. When its cool out, I can get by with the front window out and the side glass open. But here in sunny fl, the summers are wayyy to hot to do this to my dogs. Anyone have any ideas as far as portable coolers? I have seen a few, and like this idea, but damn pricey

I also saw this idea, wow looks very cheap. Guess I could buy it and see how it works?

So anyone have any ideas???!!!!

How long is your dogs back there ? Are you talking about leaving them in there when your parked, like in a store for long periods or just to take them somewhere ?

I ask because if it were for just when you were moving you could maby get some kind of spray on insulation, or some type of tough insulation for the sun and just do some kind of better ventilation when moving.

That's very similar to what they use in greenhouses, they use a big flat area covered with a type of course matting that water is circulated down into a container and pumped back to the top to repeat. On the inside they use big fans to draw air through the matting, as it evaporates it drops the temps and cools the greenhouse in the summer. Humid but much cooler, it really works.

Well the cap is fiberglass with carpeted insulation, and the bed is sprayed with rhino, not gona beat that. It would be for trips when I am in the store, or when I am driving to and from a location where they get in and are very muddy!

Even when moving, its too hot. It was over 100 degrees last week, with the humdity [&].

Well I hate to say it but you might be better off with just more ventilation for trips when your not stopping at a store.

The only reason I say this is if you were to get one of those AC type deals and you were inside a store even for 30 minutes and it quit working for any reason the dogs probably wouldn't last very long at all closed up in the summer heat. It would get pretty rough for them in a hurry, you know in the summer down here with the windows up and no ac it can get to 110*+ in about 10 min.

Maybe put them up front with you and equip them with diapers, booties, and neckercheifs to catch the slober.

Does not help, I have tried this, when they whip their heads around the slobber goes everywhere!!!

Have you thought about a truck air conditioner? The company Waeco has 24 and 12 v models. They are normally for big trucks but could probably be installed in a normal pickup...

Even if I were to somehow mount a fan for more ventilation when stopped, that could still quit.

The units I have been looking at seem very stout, they are used on small airplanes for taxi and take off.

Other then taking out the back cap window and somehow installing a fan with a piece of wood, redneck engineered, I dont think I could increase the airflow at park.

The biggest problem I have is when they are dirty. My Dobie stands tall, and his head hits the headliner. I can live with the dirt and hair on the door panels (its not easy) but to clean a headliner, again and again sucks. Maybe I will just buy a cage for them in the back seat, and cover the top and side parts up with a blanket?

Or something like this

Wow dude thats cool! but 6 agm truck batteries, and the unit weights almost 200lbs! I cant imagine that this thing would sell for under $2000! Thats a little more then I want to spend.

The Waeco units are smaller and could be attached on top of the Bed cover, Here they run around 1200€ or so. Or for a boat, they also have small units. Like this unit

Quoted from this web site: http://phoenix.about.com/od/car/a/summercar.htm

Before we get to the tips, here are a few words about children and pets.
Do not ever leave children or pets in a closed car. It doesn't take
much for heat stroke to set in, or worse. Every year children and pets
die in cars. Small children and animals are not able to open a window or
open a door like you can. Typically, they will be quiet as heat
overcomes them, so there won't be crying or other audible indications of
trouble. Cracking the windows does not help; it doesn't prevent the
temperature in the car from rising.
Leaving children and pets inside a
closed car, or even one with the windows rolled down, is dangerous,
deadly, and illegal.

Sorry for my earlier post conner I had the wrong idea that the dogs would be in the truck bed. Still, it never hurts to have an ice machine.

First of all, oldtimer, how did you know my last name was conner?? Did you figure out my secret in my sn???!!!!

The dogs will be in the bed, which has a really cool cap on it, lucky dogs!

I love ice, an ice machine would be cool anywhere!
