Overreseached
I've been thinking about getting a tube amp. Usually, this is dreaming of finding a McIntosh classic amp at an estate sale for $50. Anyway, is it possible to run one without a preamp? For example, could you connect a smartphone or Logitech Squeezebox Touch or other device with a volume control directly to an amp? I realize these wouldn't the best sound sources. Ultimately, one would need to get a preamp and a turntable. I'm just killing time before my lunch ends.
JL Sargent
I do it all the time. So yes, you can connect those things directly to an amp.
Mallette
Sure, as long as the signal is hot enough. Dave
Don Richard
You'll be fine using devices with line level outputs, I've done it before.
wuzzzer
A while back I was using a Sonic Impact T-amp with a Denon CD player that had its own volume control. Worked and sounded absolutely amazing.
dmk
I am assuming that you mean a power amp. It can be done, but you need to ensure that when you plug in your source, that the volume on the source is set for minimum. If the source only have line-level output, you could be in for a world of hurt.
