new KLF-30s...

Just replaced my (recently bought) Forte IIs with KLF-30s. WOW! Have I psyched myself or are these SOBs something else? These things sound fantastic. Perhaps I should do a comparison between the KLF-30s and Fortes IIs. The KLFs just sound so good and make you take notice and enjoy. Maybe it's me.

However, the difference I perceived made me think of the recording quality of music. I have CDs I enjoy because I like the talent and interaction of the musicians. And then there are talented musicians who are fortunate to be recorded by labels who make quality a concern. Not the quality of the signal, the quality of the recording. Do the instruments appear (sound) like they are coming from distinct points in the sound source? Maybe.

There are those recordings which sound like the mikes are on the other side of a glass plane from the musicians, giving a "flat" sound. And, there are those recording which make you feel like you are sitting in the audiance of a concert; a full 3D-type (almost) sound. I always go to my favs for audio testing and enjoyment. FYI, GRP Records seems to do a pretty good job and have good artists (if you like jazz).

Anyway, the KLF-30s sound GREAT and I wish I had known about them a long while ago. Happy listening.

The recording quality issues are always exposed with Klipsch, especially with the big boys! If the recording is good, the Klipsch sound heavenly - but poor recordings are exposed too. You will find yourself being more concerned with this because the Klipsch show everything, warts and all. I wouldn't want it any other way.

BTW, how is the JBL 4638 treatin' ya?

Congrats on your purchase! After 5 years of service my KLF's are still going strong. The KLF-30's are the only items I haven't, or wanted, to upgrade... they are just that good. The other bonus is that the are amazing in HT as well as 2 channel. Enjoy

KAiN64: Thanks for the reminder.

dndphishin: Actually, I also have this realization in my car stereo (Toyota 4Runner...pretty damn good stereo!). It's true...there is a difference in the playback. Find a record company that cares (GRP records hosts some of the best jazz musicains around-try em-you'll like em). The JBLs are thumpin' and bumpin' - I now (live) in a (live) concert hall.

avman: The 30's just sound so much better than my Qaurtets and and Forte IIs (to me). Maybe I just needed a change?

erdric: they are idle...

Thanks for the words,

Dndphishin,

Just to throw in my 2cents, I absolutely love the JBL 4638 and how it integrates with the Heresys. Last night I had my brother and his girlfriend over to chat, have a drink and watch some tube. Just for a moment I cranked it up pretty high and we both giggled at thewind that was hitting us from the front of that JBL!!

I have to admit, when I first tested the KLF-30s (without the two JBL 4638s), I thought they were defective...not that much on the low end. Even after making sure my DSP-A1 was config'ed correct, I took off the speaker connector plates to make sure everything was hooked up internally. The horns on these throw much more sound than than the 12" woofers; I had to crank it to convince myself by sound and woofer movement that they were working. I guess I'm just used to heavier base now.

I just wish I wasn't working six days a week and more able to enjoy them. Oh well...soon.

Boa12,

I'm driving the 30s with my Yamaha DSP-A1, the mains (30s) set to large and the LFE/Bass output set to both (SW and mains). The main speaker wires connect to the LFE posts on the 30s and is bridged to the mids/highs with the gold plate bridge connector. Should the 12" woofers in the 30s use separate amping?

At what frequency is the 2nd octave?

ct, i wouldn't send LFE to the 30s also if that's what it is the yammy's doing. should be setting(s) that sends low bass to both the 30s & the sub preout, but LFE to the sub preout only.

i'm taking it you have the sub preout connected to an external amp & then the jbl. then you should have plenty of juice from the yammy for the 30s. iow, no real need to bi-amp the 30s. may want to try biwiring them though.

just that when you said "I took off the speaker connector plates to make sure everything was hooked

up internally. The horns on these throw much more sound than than the 12" woofers; I had to

crank it to convince myself by sound and woofer movement that they were working. I guess

didn't sound right to me. have you tried running just the 2 30s alone w/o the jbl & other speaks (like stereo)?

oh & the 2nd octave is 40-80hz. pretty much the effective bottom range of 30s. i'd experiment w/ all the dif large/small & bass control variations, w/ both 5.1 & 2- channel bassy material, to find which sounds best.
