End Of Windows XP Means I need Help

One of the things not mentioned here is that your ISP has Anti-virus software which caught two items mailed to

me before they got to my computer. And if your machine opens to a secure website (HTPPS) you should be ok.

with XP.

Theoretically speaking.

Mine is a Dell 4600 from 2004 running XP - have never had an issue.

D1522 processor

512 ram? memory

80GB - plenty of room

DVD burner

Haven't used IE in years - firefox

Avast - Malwarebytes etc.

My use is internet & light office program use.

Should I install SP3 while it's still available? Never updated because I read where some folks had problems.....figured if it ain't broke...

SP3 will still be available... anyone who has it could send you a copy, even if MS sopped having it on their servers. We always have the latest updates on our machines at work. We are finally moving the last of our computers off of XP to Win7 through the summer. We have a small group of tablets that we are testing and using Windows 8/8.1.

What we have found to be more important is to have the latest BIOS installed. Also, most Dells update their system software, which gets a lot of the hardware to work more efficiently (for lack of a better term) with the OS.

The 4600 is getting a little long in the tooth, though.

Bruce,

I found some Dell Optiplex 760 quad cores for a decent price. $200 each. These were originally Vista and now have W7 installed.

I am using 2 Optiplex GX280's for my business right now and they work very well. My machign is the same machine that I have used since 2005.

Are the Optiplex 760's a good upgrade with W7?

Is a change to a solid state HD worth it? I use a server, so I woudl only need a 128 GB HD (This allows a C drive for the OS & a D Drive to back up my important files on my server each night - about 40 - 50 gb).

I was going to go with Linux, but keeping everything working like XP will keep us way more efficient in the offfice and wind up costing much less in the long run.

Solid State hard drives are awesome and worth the money if you have it to spare.

Yes and yes...

I have a few 755 Optiplexes we were discarding from work. The are only 2.83Ghz Core 2 Duo CPUs, but they work fine with Win 7. We just started getting rid of the 760 series, and some of them have been running Win 7 for some time now with great success. We have a about 60-100 of the quad core 780s that we will probably take out of service next year.

The SSDs will make a huge performance boost for you, especially if you are connecting to servers. We just got some of the newer XPS 13 notebooks with SS drives and the performance is outstanding.

To be honest, I think that MS is finall getting their act together with the last two rollouts of operating systems. Win7 was prertty stable from the get go and from our perspective at work, think that 8 will be as good (not withstanding the interface issues). I think they are both faster/more efficient than XP.

I personally think MS trimmed the fat on ver. 8 so it would run better on tablets, which just makes it that much better for the desktop users as well.

Thanks Bruce. Don't really know what you said other than my computer is old. Sounds like use it til it quits at my risk.

I've got a similar Gateway in my closet I haven't used for 10 years. I suppose I could pull it out if needed.

I'm changing professions and don't need to spend upgrade money yet.

Thebes, I've been reading your posts for a few years now … I suspect you've needed help for quite some time.

Now, now. See here I'm doing some of my best work these days:

"I hate it that all these programs I have installed are always reporting back to the mothership, supposedly checking for updates, when in fact they are probably stealing my midget porn collection and selling it to septuagenarian circus people."

So why should I use an OS named after a Peanuts character. Every time I fired it up I would have that dern piano theme song rolling through my mind.

What's HTPPS? I have Verizon Fios, does that mean I have it?

So if I have to keep XP while I try to save money by not buying stereo toys, how do I get rid of this annoying glitch I've developed? Almost once a day when I try to wake up XP from Standby, it doesn't start up and I have to re-boot.
