Karsoncookie
Poking around the web, I don't really get it, but bottom line is it ?seems? you can get a decent amp for like $20. WHAAAT?? Can somebody give me a brief summed up answer "like to a 5 yr old" please!! How can this be?? Sounds so BS but I don't get it. I need something to feed La Scalas or Cornscala C. 2 channel. JL Sargent
Well, there are integrated circuit chip amps now that are neat little widgets. I haven't seen a whole amp for $20.00 but I don't doubt it. You might be pleasantly surprised.
Karsoncookie
Link to discussion re: above question. I have NOOOO idea what they are talking about . PLEASE explain in a few sentences as to "5 yr old" IF this is a viable amp for a music system. Thank all, Karson http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=574806

mike stehr
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Class_T_amplifier The amplifiers you linked all contain the same type of integrated circuit, (chip) which is a switching type amplifier circuit. It operates in the megahertz range, and is brought to audio band frequencies with the use of a low pass filter. (the little coil thingies you see on the circuit boards) Sumthin' like that... mboxler
It's actually a very nice Class D amp. I bought one similar to this... http://www.ebay.com/itm/50Wx2-Official-version-Finished-TPA3116D2-Class-T-Digital-Power-Amplifier-Board-/311131698963?pt=US_Amplifier_Parts_Components&hash=item4870e4f713 and stuffed it into a cheap Radio Shack plastic project box. Powered by a $15 19V laptop power supply, it's amazing. The finished one you see has two of these chips, one of which is bridged mono. Listening to mine right now through Heresy's I'm upgrading. Thaddeus Smith
I bought the "yj blue board" version for $20, swapped out some parts with higher end alternatives for $30 and scrounged through my father in law's HAM parts rack for a 12v/7a linear power supply. Sounds great in my main system, though I'm about to swap it out for something else and move it out to the garage with some Yamaha PA speakers. Good luck with your search and ultimate decision! Karsoncookie
It seems then that the interest in these for home stereo is quashed by Old School convention?? It appears to be cutting edge miniturization??

MIke How quiet is it with the laptop power supply? I ask because I have a few extra 19V supplies and I want to add a few extra zones. This looks to be a really good solution. WIthout checking I think that the power supplies should have enough amps (they are 65w so I guess about 5.4 amps).

Actually, the one I'm using is $7.79 plus free shipping... http://www.ebay.com/itm/261548706119?_trksid=p2059210.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT It's rated at 3.42 amps, which has been plenty for me. No hiss on my Heresy's. Some swear by linear power supplies, but I'm happy with the brick. I did add a 2200uF cap across the DC input just to have a little more in reserve. tigerwoodKhorns
Put it in a fancy aluminum box with fins on the side and spiked feet and you can say that it has a fancy outboard power supply to reduce distortion.
mboxler
The one drawback to these amps is the light weight. I put my Squeezebox Touch on top; otherwise, the cables will tilt the amp backwards. Edited November 10, 2014 by mboxler
FrPerdurabo
I bought the Nobsound version from Amazon along with a 24 volt power supply brick. It sounds ... very good. It replaced an Harman Kardon HK870. I'm driving it with an old George Wright WLA-10 tube line stage, but it also sounded good w/ a Rotel tuner/pre. I just bought a used regulated, linear power supply off eBay - that's supposed to kick it up a notch. My speakers are 91db efficient Dahlquist M905s; I suspect it would sound even better w/the very efficient Klipsch stuff. Bottom line: I'm not sure megabuck transistor amps are worth the money anymore, but SET-lovers don't have to panic, yet. That said, they might want one of these during air conditioner season.
