ryrebo
New to this forum a lot of good info.. My question; I have two vintage mid 70's khorns that Im using as left and right, a vintage La Scala using as a center, two RF 7 II using as back left and right. I have a video projector that runs through a HK avr 7.1 receiver so that I can watch movies and or listen to concerts on dvd. The problem I m having is that when I change from 5.1 to 2ch the khorns don't have sound that i have heard from tube amps etc. I don't want to have two seperate receivers to achive both of these anyone have any feed back on what I could do to get the most out of this equipment. Thanks
akdave
Welcome to the forum! You have some great gear! I don't have any experience with tube amps so I can't offer anything to help with that but others will chime in.
Klipschsonian
Welcome to the forum and you have a very nice setup. Are you getting adequate power/sound in 5.1 mode? How bout using stackable amps on your receiver to boost your 2ch setup.
NBPK402
I don't think it is a power issue since he is complaining about the sound in 2 channel not sounding like tube amps... You might want to look at getting a small stereo tube amp, and using the preamp outs (I am assuming you have some on your AVR) to drive the KHorns.
mustang guy
Do you have the 'Front Left & Right' set to 'LARGE' in [speaker Setup]?
ryrebo
Yes the front l/r are set to large
ryrebo
So if I used a small stereo pre amp tubes for the l/r would i still be able to use them in the 5.1 for movies etc? If so can you suggest a good tub amp?
derrickdj1
You may need a switch box if the power demands are to much for a tube amp with movies and running the speakers as Large. If you have a sub run the speakers as small. It will save a lot of headroom. Edited February 28, 2015 by derrickdj1
ryrebo
Sooo to make sure I understand in my case I would run my HK355avr, a swift box and a preamp all through my hk? then when I want to listen to 2ch I would use the switch box to listen to the 2ch? Who is a maker of a good switch box? Also can you recommend a good tube amp I could run as well. Thanks
mustang guy
I use a Niles SPK-1 on the speakers, and the Niles AC-3 which operated off a 12VDC trigger. I have a manual 12VDC toggle switch I built to trigger the tube preamp and amp on and switch the speakers to them as a source all at once. Derrick was pointing to the manual DPS-1. With it, you have to be mindful not to let the preamp and amp stay on, as they will have no load. found on ebay: SPK-1 - http://www.ebay.com/itm/Niles-Spk1-A-B-Speaker-Switch-for-Room-Speaker-System-/121583428570?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1c4eefe3da# AC-3 - http://www.ebay.com/itm/Niles-AC-3-Automated-Switching-System-Voltage-Controlled-AC-Strip-/111574196323?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item19fa572063 or DPS-1 - http://www.ebay.com/itm/Niles-DPS-1-Amplifier-Speaker-A-B-Selector-/151602115628?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item234c30b42c Edited March 1, 2015 by mustang guy
Bryant0086
Are you 2.0 or 2.1 ? What I mean is, do you turn off the sub when you listen to music ? Once you get used to hearing the sub, it can make a two channel sound a little thin. Another possibility is your receiver settings. I am HK challenged as I have never owned one, but I do know Yamaha has what they call "scenes" which means you get different Eqs with different inputs, Do you have a dedicated CD player, or do you use the DVD player that you are happy with as far as the live concerts ? It could be several things....... though it could be that you do prefer tube. Bryant
ryrebo
Yes Im in 2.0 no sub selected.. Is there not a reciver out there that will give me the sound these khorns have in 2.0 so I can enjoy music , as well as the abality to listen to 5.0 so that I can enjoy a movie as well? derrickdj1
Look at some of the mid priced Pioneer Elite avr's.
Rowan611
Nothing against Pioneer, but if it has to be a receiver, and it has to have HDMI, I'd look at some NAD receivers. Very neutral, powerful and wonderful with music. Nothing will replace tube amps, and unless you're willing to spend a lot of money, NAD receivers are hard to beat sound wise. I have an older T763 that sounds so nice with my Heresys, or anything else really.
Montego
I have my khorns connected to a mac preamp/amp for 2 channel listening. I connected the avr front main pre-outs to an aux input on the mac preamp for movies. Never mind, I just reread that you don't want multiple components Edited March 3, 2015 by Monty

I am more than very pleased with the sound quality of my NAD T175HD pre/pro for music and HT, as well as my older flagship NAD T773 AVR with my Heresys. Montego
It doesn't have to be a mcintosh but I have a C504 preamp and MC 2125 amp. You can do it with any stereo amp/preamp/receiver you prefer. I just meant to say that I set up a normal 2 channel system with the khorns and connected the avr front main pre-out to the 2 channel system. That way I can listen to a 'traditional stereo' without turning on the avr. Hope that kind of makes sense.

Thanks With my Denon 4520, I can select Stereo (with subs), Direct, and pure direct for stereo with out subs. It will automatically select 5.1, 7.1 etc depending on the source. Other AVRs will do the same.
