DTLongo
Am attaching a pic of one of my new 2003 Klipschorns, delivered April 6, 2003 after a six-month wait. If this pic succeeds I will post a couple of more pics of their innards. My initial comments on these speakers are on the General forum, which apparently is temporarily closed for new stuff but you can still read recent postings. Frzninvt
Very nice, are those finished in Oak Clear? The finish looks like my Oak Clear Belle's because it certainly looks lighter than my Oak Oil Khorns. I am really intersted to see the horn drivers and crossover networks though, bring on the photos! Congrats on a stunning pair of brand spanking new Khorns!
sunnysal
looks great, congrats! please DO post a picture of the x-over and the drivers if possible, we are all DYING to see them! regards, tony
Al Klappenberger
Tony, Here's what the AK-4 network looks like. It's all inside the woofer hatch. Al K.
Frzninvt
Geez, that looks pretty sloppy for a factory crossover, the zip ties aren't even neatly clipped. The components (capacitors anyway) look decent though, the coils look like really thin spun wire though. Damn Al your ALK's look neater and better laid out than the new AK-4's and they want $1800 for those things with drivers! I think they could have done a much job better myself, looks like it was just quickly slapped together what a shame. I could do better than that without even trying hard. Al Klappenberger
Frzninvt What bothers me is that there is not autotransformer. It looks like they have reverted back to resistor pads to reduce the squawker level. I don't beleive that is a good idea. I can't really make any serious comments about the AK-4 until I get somebody to loan me one so that I can evaluate it though. Al K.
sunnysal
thanks Al, I noticed the lack of autotransformer as well...and those resisitors, hard to tell about quality from the photo. but certainly the coils are not SOTA...clearly changed from the AK-3...well I have my ALKs and I am anxious to hear them with my now ready for shipping 2A3 PP amps...regards, tony
CatManFever
What speakers did you audition before you bought your Klipschorns?
Deang
So, what is inherently "bad" about using padding resistors instead of an autoformer? Worded another way, what advantage does the autoformer provide? These crossovers look pretty nice to me.
Istari
This is a picture of a protype AK-4 crossover. The actual production model is mounted on a printed circuit board. It looks much neater...
sfogg
"Worded another way, what advantage does the autoformer provide?" A more connected path to the damping of the amplifier. With resistors you are isolating the drivers from the damping factor (output impedance) of your amp. I read somewhere on hear though that the K55x wasn't as efficient as earlier models so it might not have needed the autoformer or resistors though. Until someone traces out the new crossover we couldn't say for sure though. Shawn

garymd
Tom, I decided to bring both amps on Saturday (the scott and the fisher). Let me know if I should bring anything else, cables, etc.
lorcoll
This should be the stock AK-4 network.
Al Klappenberger
Lorenzo, How about letting me borrow that AK-4 for a few days! I promise to email you the schematic I plan to draw of it. Maybe even some performance curves! Al K.
lorcoll
Sorry Al, but I took the image from internet only to show the new Klipsch network. I hope you can find an AK-4 for tests and tell us more about it. Regards.
Deang
Al, Just curious -- but what good would just having the crossovers be to you, don't you need the drivers too?
Daddy Dee
Very nice. You know, you might be able to get a favor or two out of Al Klappenberger if you'd send him the networks for a while. I wish he owed me a favor. I'd take it in convincing him to build a pair of networks for my Heresy's.
