hoggy
Thanks for all the info guys. Lots of things to think about. Almost overwhelming. dubai2000, It appears my C40 has two more outputs that are switched to run 2 more amps. Guess that means I can use a self powered sub with either of these. In fact the C40 has a built in 20 watt amp with power guard etc for monitoring. Now as to which SVS sub would you guys recommend if I was to go that route. artto, My listening room is my living room and I doubt very much if I could get the acoustic needed to go that way. It would be a nightmare to say the least but I may consider it. I do play my music very loud at times but mostly with 35 watt peaks. I don't want the minimum sub but would like not to have to buy the most expensive one either unless absolutely needed. I'm still going to have to think hard about this either way. I'm not rich but have income tax coming back. hoggy
dubai2000
hoggy, before purchasing my SVS I contacted Tom @SVS about which model might suit my purposes (only two channel, 90% used for music) and he came up with the PB2-ISD. What I liked was that he at not time tried to sell me something I might not need...and I am very happy with the sub...it's certainly powerful/clean enough and probably more sub than I will need even in future. Ho_Leung
I am asking the same question. I have two amps a GTA 300B and a Jeff Korneff 45. With my system the Khorns lower end lacks impact ? Period. The mid and high end are incredible. My set amps don't have enough balls to fill in the lower registers. 1. Hense swithching preamps to one with massive storage - really stong bass. 2. A sub woofer / or two / to fill in were the Khorns wash out. 3. Biamped situation with active xover- not ideal. 4. Running 4way 5. Something else? IF the lower register was augmented with more presence and impact my sytem would be over the top.
Frzninvt
Get a subwoofer, component changes are not going to augment the physics behind the cutoff frequency of the bass horn. I use a pair of 15" Velodyne Servo's, clean, clear, deep, undistorted bass that pickup the lower octaves that the Klipschorn's leave off below 30Hz. michael hurd
Ho_Leung: are you close to a pro sound outlet or a rental outlet? If so, you could try out a good quality professional power amplifier for not a lot of money. Most places will rent out either by the day or weekend. The only thing you might need is a set of adapters that go from rca ( phono ) to 1/4" t/s. If you can swing it, try out a Crown K-series amp ( convection cooled, no fan ) or a QSC PLX series amp. ( can be modified with a much quieter fan )
formica
With my system the Khorns lower end lacks impact ... My set amps don't have enough balls to fill in the lower registers.Unfortunately, you have the answer to your own question... your power amps don't have enough power for the volume you'd like. In other words, the amps run out of power when the music becomes more dynamic or the volume is a little more elevated... and the compression you are hearing is the result. If I understand correctly, you aren't looking to hear the 32' organ pipe or bass rumble from your favourite Drum'n'Bass artist... but you are looking for the bass which normally comes from the Khorn?? I'm not sure why you don't want to biamp your Khorns... as that would be the most obvious solution. How do you plan on using this subwoofer... line level in and high pass to your SET amps? If you set the x-over high enough, it would reduce the load to the SETs and definitely improve the sound... but you'd be replacing part of your bass bin with a subwoofer. A worse solution is running the Khorns full range on the SETs, and overlapping the sub... as it won't fix the source of the problem, but only partially hide it (kinda like adding bathroom air freshener...). Just my 2¢... Rob PS: I use a subwoofer with my klipschorns, but I actually do want to cover the 20 to 40Hz range
Born2RockU
If anyone has ever heard "SQUONK" by Genesis, off their "Trick of the Tail" cd, then they would understand why I say ...I LOVE my RSW15 for those occassions !!!
Erik Mandaville
Craig! " If anyone has ever heard "SQUANK" by Genesis, off their "Trick of the Tail" cd," Wow, you among the few I have talked with familiar with Squank! That is really neat, and yes, it's a favorite Genesis song of mine. Hey, if you don't the double Genesis' double album Seconds Out, you should get it! The version of that song is even better, partly because I think Chester Thompson (what a great drummer) does an even better job with it than Phil did on Trick of the Tail. Mike Rutherford's bass pedal stuff is just fantastic, but I have not heard it on a a system with a good subwoofer. Some may not know what a fabulous drummer Phil Collins is! I love Brand X, and Collins shows what he is really capable of on a couple of those albums. Seconds Out mentioned above also features Bill Bruford, who filled in (no pun intended) for awhile after Gabriel left, and Phil became the front man for the band. I'm sure you know, too, that Neil Peart was strongly influenced by both Bruford and Collins! Cool! Thanks for bringing this up -- it brings back some memories! Got 'em all. I love trips down my musical memory lane ! Especially "Unorthodoxed Behavior" by Brand X. Phil Collin's smokes on that album ! Dylanl
I have been a huge Genesis fan back from my 33 "Nursery Crime" Most of my Genesis stuff seems to lack bass. I wonder if it is in the recordings?
colterphoto1
It's SquOnk. It's also on the Seconds Out live, still some ripping bass lines! Somewhere on that album Michael Rutherford lays down some Moog Taurus bass pedal notes. I belive they are one octave below bass guitar. Also Chris Squire from Yes is awesome on the Taurus Pedals. psg
I use a sub since it's there for HT anyway. For 2-channel, the KHorns are set to large and the sub gets bass below 40 Hz. The sub rarely does a whole lot of work, but what it does get is so low it isn't directional at all.
Erik Mandaville
You know, I thought that 'a' in Squonk didn't look quite right...but I knew the song he meant. Dean: Supper's Ready is a great song, both the Peter Gabriel version, and the one Phil Collins sings on Seconds Out. I've seen Genesis several times, and was thrilled when I suddenly heard the familiar lyrics -- "Walking across, the sit-ting room, I turn the television off...." It was really something to see and hear live. Erik
