Went to the Hollywood Bowl last night with the family for "World Music Festival 2004 @ the Bowl", "Hip-Hop Night". It was the wife's idea for a family outing. She thought our 20yo daughter (in town from school with bum/loser boyfriend in tow), 10yo son might both enjoy the music(?) and I should just grin and bear it. Surprise! We had a GREAT time. Everytime we go to the Bowl I'm reminded what a great time can be had there in the summertime. A picnic in the trees beforehand, my son feeding the dear until I remembered about the West Nile problems deer can carry...oops! Get away from those mangy creatures right now! Anyway, the weather is perfect and the newly renovated stage and sound system are great!

Lineup

Control Machete - hip-hop/gansta rappers from Monterey, Mexico. What the h*** were they talking about? A lot of crotch grabbing and marching around stage. Too loud. Give them a "5" at best.

Thomas Mapfumo - "Chimurenga" band leader/singer from Zimbabwe. Pretty nice music with great dancers, if a little monontinous. Once again, can't understand a word. Give them a "7".

Kid Koala - Scratcher/DJ from Toronto, Canada. Pretty interesting sounds and best of all, he's into vinyl! Give him a "7.5"

Wyclef Jean, et al - Founder of the Fugee's and trying to get back to that level of fame. BIG surprise! Great entertainer! Did some classic hip-hop, played better than passable guitar, and covered very well some songs from Bob Dylan to Bob Marley. Lots of fun and got 15,000 yuppyfied honkys up and dancing. Best song/quote - "I may smoke Bush, but I'm votin' for Kerry!". Fun stuff. Give him a "8.5".

Two days ago, we went to a free outdoor concert across the street from the Thunder Bay charity casino. The featured acts were Chilliwack and Loverboy. Speakers were large format Jbl, amplification unknown. 6 splayed loudspeakers on scaffolds, plus 8 sub bins on each side made up the array.

The trouble was that they had set up the stage in the wrong place, according to my thinking. The 30 foot high casino walls, being so close resulted in a large amount of reverberation, and generally bad sound, unless you were right close to the casino or the speaker array. 14.gif

If they had located the stage in the opposite corner of the parking lot, there would have been approximately 650 - 700 feet to the closest buildings, rather than the 250 feet away from the longest wall of the casino.

August 3rd. Saw Rush in concert at the Nissan Pivilion. That was one friggan awesome show! Even after 30 years, those guys can still rock with the best of'em. Oh, wow, I am still giddy about that, nearly a full month later! I sure as hell hope they go on tour again in the near future!

Just Friday night, went over to K.C.'s Music Alley right here in good'ol Freddyburg to watch a couple of local bands play, namely Crush-N-Run. They played a lot of covers, but they also played a number of original tunes. One of the guitar players is a good friend of mine, also.

Van Halen - Staples Center, Los Angeles, August 20th. Yep, they are still rockin after 25+ years. Eddie was better than ever. Wolfgang even came out and played two songs with him.

I am jealous skonopa!! "Feedback" is one hell of a killer cover album. I have been listening to that one a lot since it came out. Even if you never cared much for Rush, it's hard not to like that release. Did they play any of the cuts off that?

We saw the Steep Canyon Rangers (an NC bluegrass band) in a benefit concert for the Nashua River Watershed Association a couple of weeks ago. They're quite good, and entertaining (we've seen 'em before). This time, they had a decidedly non-country fiddler who was exteremely good (although he looked like a little kid!).

Oh yeah, they played a couple of cuts off that. They played Summertime Blues and Crossroads. I believe they played something else, but cannot remember what.

It was a truely incredible show! N*SUCK and the like can take the short express to hell! Get some groups with real talent up there! 11.gif

In July I saw Keiko Matsui and her husband headline at a free outdoors jazz concert in Birmingham, MI. She is a superb pianist, which I enjoyed far more than her electronic keyboards. Her and her husband really know how to relate to their audience. Being very elegant and easy on the eyes is a definite plus too. Hope she returns next year.

Saw Steve Winwood in Amsterdam. Awwwwwwsome! I never thought he is still that good!6.gif The sound was great, only a few bands can pull that really great sound of. Others that have done that recently:

ZZtop, The Tragically Hip, Roger McGuinn, Emmylou Harris to name a few.

Went to see Grand Funk at the boat and a free night at the motel. They played most of the classics,I'm Your Captain,Footstompin'Music,Inside Lookin' Out etc..It was all free but I would have gladly paid, better than I thought it would be.Went to see David Allen Coe but,he didn't show, the local bands(guys I've known all my life) were better anywho. This was a rather wild event for my area, outdoors, lots of bikers(all well behaved)lots of booze and no law on the premises.
