Audio Flynn
I bought this in 1978 and discintinued its use full time in 1993. I turn it on for a couple of hours a few times a year and the strobe indicates it holds speed pretty good. I have been thinking about the Music Hall MMF5 or an entry level Rega or Rotel. Should one just get a new turntable? model recommendations? Opinions always apreciated!
Guest BobG
The 510 was not a bad 'table for the money. Put a good cartridge on it and use it till you figure out what to do next.
Mike Lindsey
Flynn, I bought my Dual CS-721 in 1978 as well (Hessisch Oldendorf, Germany) and have had many wonderful years with it. Just recently however, I decided to upgrade it. I just bought a Dual CS-5000 from Ebay with a Shure V15V-MR cartridge on it. I absolutely love it! Here is a picture of it... http://www.compassnet.com/concept/tables/5000.htm Mike ------------------ Family Room ----------- Hitachi 43UWX10B HDTV (16:9) Denon AVR-4800 Panasonic DVD-RP91K (Progressive Scan & DVD-Audio) Dual CS-5000 Turntable w/Shure V15V-MR DBX 3bx Series III Range Expander Klipsch Epic CF-2's (mains) Klipsch KLF-C7 (center) Klipsch RS-3's (surrounds) SVS 20-39CS Sub w/Samson S700 Amp Monster HTS-3500 Line Conditioner Scientific Atlanta Explorer 2100 Digital Cable box Monster M-500 Component Video cables Monster Datalink 100 Digital Coaxial cables Radio Shack Gold Series for all other audio interconnects Bedroom ------- Mitsubishi 31" TV Yamaha M-4 Amp Yamaha C-4 Preamp Yamaha T-7 Tuner Teac DVD Player Dual CS-721 Turntable w/B&O MMC2 Looking for a pair of Heresy's

What are using for a cartridge?

Klipschguy
I like my Dual 1228. Got an Ortofon OM30 cartridge - decent sound, but I like my brother's Grado cartridge better (not sure of the model #, but it's gold). Dual's are good German made turntables, esp for the $. Clint Phare
Am I right in thinking that it was Dual that never put a bottom cover on their turntables? Didn't that cause some harmonics problem or rumble in the tables? That was a long time back and I am a little hazy about it now. I just gave a friend and old Thornes td125 with sme tone arm that has been sitting in my closet for ten years. I do think vinyl sounds wonderful, but kids and the ease of cd's and mp3's have kind of won out for the time being . ------------------ Just who is Dylan's Jokerman anyways? rowooo
Audio Flynn....Just bought a MMF-5 a couple months ago and I love it. Don't get to use it as much as I would like..{Kids} but when I do get a chance to sit and listen it's really enjoyable. Great table for the money...It comes with a decent cartridge from the factory so all you have to do is set everything up and go....Good luck
Audio Flynn
Thanks for the ideas. The tonearm design concept for the CS5000 is very simial to the table I have. Platter and base are much different. I will put a new cartridge(alwys wanted to try a low line Grado like the Red) on it and buy a record cleaner. Colin
ditto on the Dual - there is a 1246 sitting here, but I barely played records once CDs came out - strongly disagree on the Stanton cartridge - it is too accurate to be any good IMO - my recommendation is the Grado - very musical (highest compliment you can give an audio component, means that it is better than the specs reveal) also try to build the best vibration isolation platform (VIP) for the table that you can - I haven't notice so much difference between tables as I have between cartridges and VIPs ... ------------------ big old horns, tube amps, tube pre-amp, British CD player, two subs, double wire, pipe insulation, paving stones, rubber mats & curtains

willjam
I just purchased a used Rega Planar 3 turntable. I have not listened to vinyl in over 3 years and had forgotten about how dynamic records can sound in comparison with CDs. Fortunately I never considered dumping my 200+ recordings. Revive the Dual with a quality cartridge or find a used Rega and enjoy those records again.
