Do you listen to music or equipment ?

Hi,

I asked myself this question after browsing the Audiogon forms for a

while. It just amazes me how much high end stuff comes up for sale

after only a few months of use. The discussion forums have

21000 posts to the amplifer, speaker and technical forums and

2445 posts to the music forum. Many of the members there are most

likely equipment listeners.

Once the question is asked, what criteria do you use to answer it ?

For a start

What's worth more your CD/SACD/LP collection or your equipment ?

How long ago did you buy your last piece of equipment ?

How old is your oldest piece of equipment ?

Do you read music reviews or equipment reviews ?

Do you attend live concerts of any sort or attend Audio shows ?

With your friends do you talk about the muisic or the stuff its palyng on ?

Please chip in with other thoughts ...

I'm a music listener from way back and a relatively new Klipsch fan

My LP collection--by a factor of at least 50, maybe as high as 100

The last major piece was the BAT VK-D5 CD player in 2000

My McIntosh MC-30s, which date from about 1957

Some--I read Art Dudley every month. Used to read his mag cover to cover, but alas it is no more. I read concert reviews more than album

reviews,

A hear live music on average 6 times per month. I went to CES once with a friend back in the mid-1990s.

With your friends do you talk about the muisic or the stuff its playing?

Music Baby ! Why else would I bother with this stuff . I like Dukes statement about most of his friends wouldn't even know how to turn his system on . I leave written instructions for friends and family when I'm out of town . So when they come over and feed the cat they can hang out and listen to music and or watch a movie . Only a couple of them can get past the touch screen Sony remote .

Monetarily speaking, I'd say I paid much more for my system.

About $1300 in my system, and then about 80 CDs. No idea what my

CDs are worth.

Which would I rather part with? Hmm. I'd rather 'lose my

system' than 'lose my music.' However, they're both replaceable.

How long ago did you buy your last piece of equipment?

That would be my speakers, I believe: bought sometime last year (I'm bad with time).

How long ago did you buy your last CD/LP/SACD?

Sunday!!

How old is your oldest piece of equipment?

Hmm. My receiver. By a year.

Do you read music reviews or equipment reviews?

Mostly equipment reviews, and then only when I'm considering my next step. I usually don't read much audio related.

Do you attend live concerts of any sort or attend audio shows?

I *think* I've been to one concert. However, what's an audio show?

With your friends, do you talk about the music or the stuff it's playing on?

Whichever I can get them to talk about! lol

1. What's worth more your CD/SACD/LP collection or your equipment ?

Equipment. LPs next, then CDs. CD player = the most expensive.

2. How long ago did you buy your last piece of equipment ?

A year or so ago. Closing in on a different preamp

3. How old is your oldest piece of equipment ?

30 years -- Revox A-77. 20 year-old cassette player. TT and preamp are 10 yrs old. Bought the K-horns over 20 years ago; the AK-4 innards are ~ two years old while the KH itself is 43 yrs. old (1962).

4. Do you read music reviews or equipment reviews ?

Music reviews occasionally if the work or performers interest me, music history articles and equipment reviews that interest me.

5. Do you attend live concerts of any sort or attend Audio shows ?

Definitely live concerts but not as many as I'd like. A few good concerts at Bethesda's Strathmore Hall, only 2 miles away, a lot more trouble to get to the Kennedy Center or Baltimore halls. No audio shows.

6. With your friends do you talk about the music or the stuff its playing on ?

Nearly always the music. Even the few (GaryMD; Thebes once so far) interested in equipment are here mainly or solely for the music unless it's an equipment comparison.

I dont know if its worth more, but I have spent more on my records/cds/sacds that I have on my equipment.

Last purchased equipment, I quess some tubes if that counts. If not it would be the Peach a couple of years ago.

Oldest equipment in main sytem are my MC225s which I think are from the early 60's. Plenty more vintage equipment Fisher 400, Dynaco ST70 ,PAS 3, Scott 299D. Tandberg 64 Reel to Reel, Wharfedale W70 speakers and others.

I will sometimes buy audiophile mags when traveling and will read both the music and equipment reviews when I do. However I prefer the music reviews in the SF Chronicle, Wall Street Journal, NYTs, People, and whatever the Maxim music magazine over the smarmy audiophile reviews.

I try to see live music as often as possible. However it ends up being about once a month.

I have never attended an Audio Show.

Other than with Chris King from the forum I never talk about equipment unless you count guitars.

I have to say however, that I really do like the sound of quality tube wash!

Music. 300+ LP's and about 100 CD's. Equipment is mostly vintage Nikko bought for a song.

6 months, a 32 band mono eq for $40.

How old is your oldest piece of equipment ?

Late 70's Gamma V tuner.

Only here and on AK.

Do you attend live concerts of any sort or attend Audio shows ?

Whenever someone decent actually comes to Fargo.

With your friends do you talk about the muisic or the stuff its palyng on ?

Mostly music, but on occasion I get sucked into "Listen to this" mode.

Once the question is asked, what criteria do you use to answer it?

Well I listen to both, but it depends on the situation.

For example, you have to be able to hear the equipment in the studio so that you don't end up compromising for flaws in the equipment (which there always are).

When listening for fun, again I can choose to listen to both. I find it very fun and entertaining to experience the differences between equipment. At the same time though, I greatly enjoy listening to just the music and getting wrapped up in it...though this is a rare occurance because I am easily distracted (either by flaws with equipment or with interruptions from my surroundings)

I don't think it's fair to compare money spent on records versus equipment nor the frequency of purchases...there is very little music out there that I would want to purchase and I'm always on the hunt for new source material. This is why I enjoy my visits to colter's so much....it's a huge library of music I've never heard before or music I've heard, but know nothing about (which makes it hard to purchase). Slowly but surely I'm sure my music collection will expand, but I refuse to purchase something that I won't listen to (I think of Artto who has thousands upon thousands of CDs and LPs, but he listens to a select hundred because all the rest sound like crap on a revealing system).

The way I look at it, I'm still on a hunt for the perfect band (nightwish comes close) and while on that hunt I see no problem with trying to get worthy equipment ahead of time. I also never pass up the opportunity to go to a live show, but I would argue that recorded and live music are two totally different approaches (one is aimed towards entertainment whereas the latter is aimed towards art...ignoring pop crap bands of course).

I think you can like both but you know you are a gear head when you spend little time listening to complete songs and spend most of your time skipping through demo material and listening to audiophile recordings that are designed as system testers.

What's worth more your CD/SACD/LP collection or your equipment ?

* 2,000 lps, 800 cds is about equal or more to my gear...depends on the price you put on the media.

How long ago did you buy your last piece of equipment ?

* I made one purchase in 2005 recently -- an upgrade

How old is your oldest piece of equipment ?

* I used to have early 1960's tube gear, but now I don't have any obsolete products in my main room but several 1970's & 80's items in other rooms.

Do you read music reviews or equipment reviews ?

* music reviews and occasional equipment reviews in magazines

Do you attend live concerts of any sort or attend Audio shows ?

* few of both but I listen to concerts at home

With your friends do you talk about the muisic or the stuff its palyng on ?

* music except for gear forums like these
