BigStewMan
one of zappa's first band mates was don van vliet (aka Captain Beefheart) strangely successful as well. i actually met him at 7-11 convenience store one night--he was buying ice cream. not that this has anything to do with this thread...sorry, saw the name zappa and this is what came to mind. oldtimer
No need to apologize, Zappatista's unite! While we are off the subject, my old school of music now has a course devoted to the study of the compositions of Zappa. Back in the day there would have been strange looks for even suggesting such a thing.
theryugobuddy
Agreed -- my cousin was a Zappaphyte back in the 70s and I always thought "why?". I remember a girlfriend back then started breaking it off with me when I criticized the fact that she listened to Peter Gabriel's early albums and early Talking Heads -- she was right to. Led Zep on Cadillac commercials? Ozzy played at NFL football games? All the seemingly subversive stuff from back then has gotten its due. Every time I listen to a Zappa guitar solo now , I think "Man I was missing this?" I think it was the "yellow snow" type lyrics that made me not pay attention to the music. But in this thread it sure kills the replies!
Jeff Matthews
Here's an obscure one I haven't heard in years.... until yesterday, when it was played on the radio. It was a hit song, and I was very young the last time I heard it. "I've had nothing but bad luckSince the day I saw the cat at my doorSo I came into you sweet ladyAnswering your mystical callCrystal ball on the tableShowing the future, the pastSame cat with them evil eyesAnd I knew it was a spell she cast." Name that Tune!
Jeff Matthews
Bump! The "Devil" made me do it! (That's your hint).
theryugobuddy
Shoot -- heard this so many times--a big hit. But I had to cheat because I couldn't remember who did it -- I'm gonna go jump off a cliff!
Jeff Matthews
Okay, the tune was "Devil Woman" by Cliff Richards. Try this: "And the unsung Western hero killed an Indian or threeand made his name in Hollywoodto set the white man free." Name that Tune!
