How embarrassing!

Talk about embarrassing![:$]

I had the folks over last night and we popped in "Flight of the

Phoenix" to watch in the HT. The son had setup the room before I got

there and long story short we had some audio feed problems. I got

things working anyway and we watched the movie. The action was lifelike

and over all I was sort of happy with the sound but something just

didn't sound right[:^)]

After the folks left, I threw in a audio DVD

and listened. There was nothing coming from the front 2 speakers![8-)]

At first I had thought that I had done something to my Fortes but when

I looked at the receiver closely, I noticed that the "zone one"

speakers were switched off and the "zone two" were on![:o] The result

of which is that the front two speakers were OFF for the whole

movie[:o] I returned things to the way they should have been and low

and behold, the Fortes worked fine! I replayed a scene from the

movie and it was much better.

They say that most of the movie is in the center channel, I knew this

in my head but it was proved last night by the showing of the move

WITHOUT the front main speakers, the imaging was good but not great and

some dialog was quieter that it should have been (the actors were off

center of the screen so that the dialog should have come out one of the

front mains) but the movie was still enjoyable[:o][:o]

That story reminds me of the time I had some friends over so I could show off my system. I fired up the THX intro and ran the volume up to -3. Rain, small thunder THEN.......... more small thunder. I didn't turn the amp on for the sub, DOH. It just wasn't the same the second time around.

Yep, I've done that with my sub before. When I turn on my outdoor speakers "B", I manually turn my sub off because it keeps playing inside. On a few occaisions, I've forgot to turn it back on when I'm watching a movie. Now I look for the little glowing green light every time I put in a movie!

If

your folks are anything like my Dad they wouldn't have been able to

tell any difference either way. I always have to enable the captions so

he can catch what's going on.

This is right in line of what I got to experience today.

My parents came down to visit and to do some shopping as well (my mom

likes to visit the scrapbooking stores here in town - there are two

very good ones right here in town).

Anyway, my parents really love seeing Andrew Lloyd Webber's Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

They have that DVD with Donnie Osmond playing Joseph. My father

did mention that he'd love to hear and see that on my system, so I told

them to go ahead and bring the DVD down when they come and visit, and

we'll watch it on my system. After watching this on my system,

they were impressed, especially my mother. She was amazed at just

how easy it was to hear and understand all the words in the

music. All the vocals, especially Donnie's, just came out

sounding so natural and clean, and easy to understand. Say what

you want about Donnie Osmond, but I'll admit that he does have

excellent voice. If there

was something wrong, my parents would've known, as they are very

familier with this particular disk, as having watched it many

times. The music itself really did sound quite good, and

admittedly, the program was entertaining to watch. I actually

recommend this for anybody that are into musicals and/or theater, as it

is actually quite well done.

Nothing like the feeling of treating the parents to something they already enjoy, but to make it even more enjoyable.

This happens with a buddy's Yammie HT receiver.

The first time I thought someone brushed the A speaker button by accident.

Then it happened again.

It is my belief that while rolling though varous inputs and settings, the receiver switches off the A speakers all on its own.

You're right - my bad! [:$] I went back and edited the post to

fix it. For some reason, I always seem to get those two mixed

up. I suppose next time, I'll be saying, "Yeah, I went and visted

Andrew Lloyd Webber's Falling Waters house there in PA" [:o]

They say that most of the movie is in the center channel,......

.......

.

.

....So much so that even the word, MOST, is a serious understatment.

I'll probably catch some crapp for this.....but,

I feel so strongly about this fact, that IMHO the rest of my HTS Heritage (i.e. Front Khorns, Side Surrounds 89 CW's, Rear Surrounds 67 CW's) are being seriously wasted. IMO, my 2 Channel is the only place my Heritage are being used for what they are.

Khorns, Cornwalls, Belle's, Scala's and Forte's (well, maybe not the forte's) used in a HTS is BIG TIME overkill. The Center channel IMO, is the only spot where using the big heritage could be considered as appropriate, but even there, it's still not working like it was intended, since most of the center is dialog, i.e mid-range.
