motorolaayatollah
Im looking to buy a good quality stereo receiver and pair of speakers for around $600. My priority is performance above all so I dont mind looking around for a deal on a used or discontinued product. So far Ive done some research and right now Im looking at the Denon DRA-395 and Harmon and Kardon HK3480, both of which Ive found for around $300. For speakers, the Klipsch KSF 10.5s seem to be a good bet. Any input or suggestions? Thanks.
ben.
To fit that budget, if patience allows, I'd find a Harman/Kardon 430, 730 or 930 Twin Powered receiver. They can commonly be found under $100 shipped and are very nice sounding with a competent phono stage if that's a factor. That leaves $500 for speakers. I'm not at all familiar with the KSF series. Cornwalls would be a good find for that kind of money, but they'd most likely be rough looking. I'd suggest two things. First, put some limits on your question. Size, vintage, listening preferences such as levels and musical styles. Number and type of sources? Second, list your general location. Folks here tend to be very helpful in pointing out local finds. Good luck!
Moderators dtel's wife Posted January 17, 2007 Moderators Share Posted January 17, 2007 IMO, Ben has made some very good suggestions. I could also recommend Forte II's for the speakers, with a little patience you could possibly pick up a pair in good condition for $500.00 or less. Oh yes, welcome to the Forum. Doc Robin
Welcome to the forum. Check out Audiogon.com for Klipsch; seems there were a set of cornwall's in your area for a good price. And as it was stated the HK line of twin powered receivers are just great with them. The 430 puts out 25 watts per channel; but thru the Cornwalls I can only turn the volume up half way any more than that and it hurts. Good luck Bill
arfandbark
I have a H/K 3480 as well as 730 and 930. I prefer the vintage H/K twin powered receivers for both FM reception and sound over the 3480. Buy yourself one of those receivers and a pair of Klipsch Heresy speakers and you have the cat by the tail.
arfandbark
Find yourself a pair of Klipsch speakers..... Heresy, Forte, Cornwalls. Build your system around your speakers and keep smiling!
3dzapper
Look for the Fortes. For hip-hop, you won't like Heresys. Not enough bass.[] However, with a good subwoofer[] Too bad you're not in Georga. There is a pair on Ebay now with a $475 BIN. http://cgi.ebay.com/Vintage-Klipsch-Forte-ll-Audiophile-Speakers_W0QQitemZ260076339659QQihZ016QQcategoryZ61378QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem Rick
motorolaayatollah
Thanks for all the replies. A couple more questions: Is 25watts going to be enough? and What kind of differences are there between the first and second generations of the aforementioned speakers? meagain
Or Chorus II if you can find them. Rick is right on the Heresys IMO. I'd not put those on the list. (I still like KG4s better)
LarryC
"Location: Bay Area, CA" Craigslist in the Bay Area has been prime hunting ground for Klipsch Heritage and lots of opportunities to audition! My brother picked up a very nice pair of black Fortes in San Fran for a good price. He likes them and you will, too. Larry
christjared
As mentioned before with the HK x30 line, currently i am listening to a 430 with a pair of KG4's and for music it is great. I also have the 3480 HK, but if your set up is for music go with the KG4's and a 430 or bigger old school Harman Kardon. I like my set up! Moderators dtel Posted January 19, 2007 Moderators Share Posted January 19, 2007 Find yourself a pair of Klipsch speakers..... Heresy, Forte, Cornwalls. Build your system around your speakers and keep smiling! Good advice, and 25 WPC don't sound like much but with those speakers it is enough to get loud, with a great sound . Doc Robin
I did not think 25 watts would get to the level of being loud enough to hurt my ears but with all of the prase the guys were giving the HK 430, 730, 930 line I had to find out for myself. I bought a 430 and was amazed at the sound level coming out of the cornwalls. I was so pleased with the sound that I bought a 730 twin which is 40 watts per channel; I can only turn the volume knob half way on either unit with out it hurting my ears. The bass hits you right in the chest and shakes the floor. Go and check out some cornwall's for yourself you will be amazed. Bill
colterphoto1
I use a HK430 with my Khorns. It's unbelievable.
kaiser SET say
One of the twins and Forte', Heries or Corns you could find something in these to fit that budget and you might even want to strech a littel[] http://cls.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/cls.pl?spkrfull&1174227840 Best of luck
motorolaayatollah
I found a mint HK930 in my area for $150. Just been serviced. Im gonna go see it this weekend. As far as speakers go, Im gonna look around for some Cornwalls or Fortes, most likely first gen. Kaiser SET, those LaScalas, as much as Id like to pick em up, are a little too rich for my blood hahaha. Thanks a lot.
Spkrdctr
KSF 10.5s are awesome. They arre the older version of the new F-3 at Best buy. They will blow you out of the room with bass and pure musical bliss. I'd take the 10.5s in a heart beat.
Doc Robin
I missed a 930 for the same price just after I sent to money off for the 430. I should have went ahead and bought it also. I will keep my eye out for one in the future. Bill
