USNRET
Raised the Chorus IIs and Quartets since birth, adopted Academy a couple of years ago and the Forte II's this week. The Rs-7s are the step children.
Moderators dtel Posted July 25, 2008 Moderators Share Posted July 25, 2008 Very nice looking family you have there ! How do you like that Forte sound compared to the rest ?
USNRET
Thanks, first a disclaimer on the Forte sound. I found them thanks to this forum's link on Craiglist and the original owner 's moving company damaged a passive radiator and a generic PR is in place (origin unknown). New one is currently on order. I have only listened to them as positioned about 4 inches in front of the Chorus II so a little (?) help in the bass vibrating the Chorus PRs. I absolutey love the sound, so much so that I am having a little problem deciding which pair to use as my mains in the HT as the HT gets much more use than the two channel. My plan was to connect a pair to a spare MAC 1700 hybrid receiver but the "one who must be obeyed" doesn't want the "kids" upstairs. Secondly I am soliciting opinions on where next to upgrade/update. Should I go with all new crossovers and diaphagms (got a quote from BEC) or send my two channel McIntosh stuff off the the guru foe a overhaul. I have no known problems with any equipment. oldbuckster
USNRetired, is that correct? Do your speakers upgrades first, I'm sure your Mac gear is fine ............... BEC is da' man with da' plan !!!!
SWL
Nice equipment.......USNRET. [] I see that you have a Jolida JD100 cdp. What is your opinion on the unit? I have one as well.......never upgraded or changed the tubes.......the warmness it adds is minimal......but is very clean sounding.
thebes
You must be retired military, you've got those puppies lined up for inspection by height![] Let me offer some sage advice from a fellow who spent his entire military elgibility hiding under his mother skirts, in hopes the draft would pass him by. Tell your best sounding speakers to "volunteer and fall out" for 2 Channel duty. HT is for "wow", 2 Channel is for "magic". Use your best people (to your ears) to make the magic. Tell them to "toe-in the line" and they will reward your loyalty and leadership. You can also give them different rankings baed uon their performance like Commodore, Admiral and my for the best pair. USNRET
I bought the Jolida from a local shop (HotRodAudio) modified because I had sold off all my two channel rigs and then hated the sound of a CD thru the AVR. I bought the Pro_Ject table and then started wondering what I should do with my CD collection...tube CD or get a DA converter and stream from the PC. I spoke with the owner of HRAM and he invited me to his shop. I auditioned, I bought. GREAT folks there. Bottom line is that it is the closest I have heard to sounding analog. I would like to hear one with the clock mod but I love it as is. It has Russian tubes from the mod and I have the stock Chinese but have not listened to them. USNRET
Thebes, Just re-read your post and caught the byline at the end[] Since I was (am) a Chief gotta think thru that! My thing now is (please don't shoot me) I use a Niles switching system to change my front mains over to 2 channel duty when called upon. I will take the advice of learned one and check the sound. So far I know the Fortes are quite a bit less efficient then the Chorus IIs but I LIKED the sound. I am having a troop movement now and will place the Fortes in formation and see what they are made of. I have to break out the laptop, mics, etc and re-calibrate the system to allow for the change in main efficiency.
stormin
Very nice USNRET. Last time I saw those all together like that was Classic Stereo in South Bend, IN 1990. Tell me those aren't all Walnut?

USNRET
and the BIG problem. I stand about an 80% chance of being relocated within the next 2 months by my employer and the wife thinks I should leave the man cave intact with the house as a selling incentive for a buyer. Yes, the whole system included. I have to give her some slack, she's deaf (literally) and doesn't get it.

Of course you wife is deaf.[] Don't use the sytsem as a selling point . 10 outof 12 wives will consider it a negative.
BigStewMan
excellent point thebes! it used to drive me crazy that my wife would be happy listening to music from a clock radio. I retired from the coast guard back in 2003--during every move, i always packed my own system and wouldn't leave it to the movers. my wife didn't understand why i wanted to keep every box and every piece of foam...until it was time to move...then, and only then, i was a genius. USNRET
First vedict in... in my room with my treatments, my squeeze in from corners to TV, my taste, etc...in 2 channel with Jolida thru Mc playing Dire Straits and Dwight Yoakom for a variety with a Markers Mark or 2 following a dinner at HOOTERS the Fortes win. Haven't tried but I think the Chorus IIs will win in HT mode.
