  1. Craig, Stop posting and get to work! My amp is only one away in the queue!!! Josh
  2. Lorenzo, Regarding the purchase of the MC 225 on ebay. I am not sure where you live so I do not know if this is practical. I bought my second MC 225 from Audio Classics. Everyone says they are expensive but I bought a very nice one that had been recaped and brought up to factory specs for less than a lot of junk goes for on ebay! Since then I had them re cap my other one and again it was very reasonable. josh
  3. If you mean "whomp whomp whomp" kind of bass, no the MC225 doesnt do that. If you mean bass that sounds like a bass-particularly a accoustic bass, yes it does that very very well IMHO. I think its the most musical amp I have ever heard ( I have owned MC 30s and liked them very much as well) . I have to say that running my MC 225s as mono blocks takse them to a new level indeed! BTW I think that the vintage Mac amps sound better with modern pre amps you know less bs in the signal path and all that. josh

I defer to Andy's expertise but it does raise the question of what truly is a decorator Cornwall. ---------------- No. You can tell that they are decs because the jionts are not mitered the same way. You can see the edges of the plywood in them - with and without the flush m-board. josh
  5. Interesting topic. I happen to be one who opted for SACD versus the DVD audio. I did so because I felt that the ability to produce Hybrid disks that are backward compatible, in addition to wonderful sound, would be the reason that SACD would prevail. I am not a sound tech but I have played music for over 35 years, some of it professionally, and I agree with the assessment of some of the contributors. SACD sounds great. Very close, in my opinion to vinyl (which I understand from a technological standpoint is not the equal to Redbook CDs - but for some reason sounds better) than Redbook CDs. Much more musical. Yes I have purchased a number of SACDs that sound crappy (the aforementioned Police issue) but that is the case with every format. Josh
  6. I have heard a difference with interconnects that quite honestly surprised me. I havent done a lot of critical listening with different speaker wires but it wouldnt surprise me if it made a bit of a difference. I know most of you have probably read Roger Russells great web site but in case you havent heres his take on speaker wire http://home.earthlink.net/~rogerr7/wire.htm#thetruth For those of you unfamiliar, Roger Russell was a speaker designer for Mcintosh
  7. Not quite yet! I sent Matthew Anker at SACDmods an email asking about the product that can be applied to optical disks. He claims it really works. http://www.amusicdirect.com/products/detail.asp?sku=AAILUMINATOR Josh
  8. I'm not sure if this is the same thing, but when I had my SACD player modded at SACDmods.com the guy who did the mods recommended using this black marker that they sold. The idea was that using this marker on the CD surface would reduce the reflection and deflection off the CD surface allowing for a tighter more defined sound. In the great big world of expensive esoteric teaks it sounded like a cheap one to try. I never did because quite honestly I forgot about it! Josh
  9. As for my nomination for "great music / lousy sound, how about the first releases of Elvis Costello's "My Aim Is True"? The LP and the first CD release both were pretty low-fi. ---------------- What a coincidence. I was listening to Moondance when I posted this, and put the My Aim is True on right afterwards. I was starting to think that I needed a new stylus! Josh
  10. I vote for Van Morrisons Moondance. I love the record but the recording s**ks. I have three different vinyl issues-the original in mint condition, a Super Disk half speed pressing and a German issue in heavy virgin vinyl. Overkill yes. But I was looking to hear one of my favs from the recent past on my current system. I have to say the music still stands up (although his masterpiece is still Astral Weeks) but the fidelity is flat flat flat. Any other quality music that we should be weary of the fidelity? Josh
  11. Welcome. Anyone that knows the Beauty of Tish Hinojosa's voice is a very welcome addition to the group. She is one magnificent singer. I saw her open once for Guy Clark and immediately bought everything she ever recorded. Not to tough on the eyes either! josh

  13. YOWWZER>>> Great going FINI. So very exciting. Cant wait to see the pics!! Josh
  14. I take it back. MTT won the Grammy for the SFS recording of Mahlers 3rd. Josh
  15. I also had a wonderful classical weekend. On Sunday, I attended the San Francisco Symphonies' matinee. Michael Tilton Thomas conducting Mahlers 5th. Quite an experience. His recording of Mahlers 4th won last years grammy for Classical. Its on SACD as will be his conducting the SFS Mahlers 5th. He is becoming known as the foremost conductor of Mahler and your investment in his Mahler SACDs is in my opinion money well spent! Josh
  16. Notice you had Scott Joplin on the piano behind you (which really got my jealous eye). I play 8 of his piano rags.. fun fun stuff. What a great picture! I'd be braggin' too! ---------------- You gotta love Playing Scott Joplin. Its about as fun as you can have on a piano. I find that after working on one of his rags that all of a sudden the hands kind of remove themselves from your body and start playing on their own! Kind of an out of body experience! Josh
  17. Penguin, Here are a couple of posts that you may be interested in. The guy at Oak Tree Enterprises and the guy at fieldengineer occaisionally have units for sale that they have refurbished. I think either is a way way betterr place to be looking than ebay - particularly with such a quirky not to metion heavy! purchase. Its one thing to get a good deal on what turns out to be boat anchor, but if it costs you 85 bucks to have it shipped that really s**ks. Josh http://www.oaktreeent.com/Stereo_Cassette_and_Reel-Reels.htm http://www.fieldengineer.homestead.com/ http://www.daeinconline.com/
  18. With all this talk about country singers, I had to post this picture of me and Jerry Jeff Walker picking in my living room! Josh

The Reel to reel tapes are in storage & now have permission to sell them. Ill probably make one more pass at listening to them. Be fore letting them go. ---------------- I am such a neophite when it comes to all things digital. What is the best (and easiest) way to convert reel to reel to a usable and quality digital backup? I have some great live recordings on reel to reel (some legal most not) that I would love to have backed up. Thanks Josh
  20. Dont forget Guy Clark, Rodney Crowell, Rosanne Cash and Joe Ely! Josh
  21. I have always used reel to reels. I know they are a bit passe give the use of computers for home recording. But I still think that a high quality reel to reel is a great addition to a system. Having said that, we are getting near the end of a lot of reel to reels useful life. The parts are no longer available, they cost a ton to ship, etc etc. I have a vintage Tandberg model 6 which I think is one of the best units ever built. But I know once it breaks I may as well throw it away - at least I ll be able to harvest the telefunkens that are in it. I also have a four channel Teac 3340 another wonderful deck. I used it in the past mostly for making mutitrack recordings. But with the 15 inch reels, I can make a long great anologue mix of songs for a party etc. Josh
  22. Yes I have received the same sort of email. I was bidding on a C-22 that I did not win and got an email from someone in Korea claining to have a mint one for less than my bid. As everyone said, if it sounds to good to be true it is. I passed and forwarded the email to the ebay fraud dept. (not that i expect them to do anything with it!) josh
  23. Oh BTW I have also purchased cable from the guy on ebay that pirahna referenced. i too would endorse the wire particularly at the price! josh
