  1. Actually... to apply this logic to real life.. You go to work. You can sit in a crowded bus or a luxury BMW. Happy Electrons make harder working electrons.. Lets give our electrons some love... If moving audio electrons could speak.. they would say.. BOSE sucks!!!

  3. That is so true. My RF-15s were in the house before I even told her about them... To help get forgiveness, I just take her to the mall or the jewelry store. When you can't win, bribe them!!! James
  4. Ear... I see you point, however sometimes, I have found it useful to have a online store. For instance, there were nobody local that had the AVR I wanted, so I bought it online. What can you do?!? I did a search for my zip code on the Pioneer website. There were NO dealers around. Pioneer has authorized online dealers but nobody to sell the "Elite" line. Sears? Best Buy? Circuit City? Not for the Elite line. I did the only thing I could do, get it from a "online warehouse" you are so against. Did I purchase the AVR unheard? Yes. how did I know it was right for me? I really didn't. I have heard and seen some of the older P.E. and was impressed enough to want to go that route. I looked at the specs and it was everything I wanted in a system. Ultimately, I was happy enough to get another system from the same manufacturer. Some people will just not have a local dealer and it that sense, its good to have online dealers. Also favorable reviews help ease the decision and saving a few bucks.. is still saving a few bucks. My brother in Maine was interested in Klipsch. Having checked the website, his closet dealer is like 122 miles away. Most dealers are 150 miles away. When he comes out to visit me, he will check out my klipsch reference speakers. Say he likes them, what is he going to do? Of course he is going to order them online. I am lucky to live in California where Good Guys and Best Buy keep klipsch in stock all the time. However, with those large retailers, they rarely budge on prices, so you *DO* end up paying retail unless you go online most of the time. Some managers at Good Guys will haggle (usually the token 10% off, which is the same as the sales tax in this state), but often not, they won't budge unless you bring them something to price match. Best Buy will never budge. So not paying retail like you mention is not possible here. Remember, in the Bay Area California, you have three choices for Klipsch. Good Guys.. a large West Coast chain, Anderson's TV, a large Bay Area chain, and Best Buy, a large USA chain. There is no Local dealer where you can develop a relationship with and get fair prices from.

I have always thought your personal cinema at your home is "reasonable". I just have to tell my wife.. movies tickets, parking, popcorn, dinner is like $50.00 each time and even she starts thinking a $20K HT system is reasonable.
  6. James- Of course bookshelf speakers on a bookshelf are more stable. Unless you get super heavy stands, they are really no more stable than floorstanding. For Carpet, using carpet spikes will help them stay on carpet...

When I saw the first LOTR and then the EE of the FOTR, I knew I was destined to own 6 movies... by the way, wanted to say, off topic, the images from your projector on your DIY screen is awesome. I hope next year is a better year for me so I can start building my own theater.

I actually have one, and brain-blanked when I was making suggestions above -- just got it and have been reading so much about the new Denon models that I totally spaced it out. However, for the time being, I'm just using it on my analog TV via component interlaced output, so I can't personally vouch for its progressive and DCDi capabilities. I do feel, though, that even its interlaced output is much better than the Denon DVD-3000 it replaces in my rack. ---------------- DD- DCDi Capabilities are a slight improvement over regular progressive scan using component video cables. It cleans up some of the jaggedness when you are up close to a RPTV. I think its a little harder to tell if you are watching on a CRT.. at least to my eyes. However, the feeling is, DCDi on the DVI output guys are supposed to be a sharper image since its a pure digital signal output. No ceonversions needed. I have been debating whether to get the Bravo D1 or the Samsung for just movies and still keep the universal player for everything else.

There is a sub $200 Pioneer universal player at Best Buy that many find attractive for SACD and DVD-A. For DVI I've enjoyed the BRAVO with a NEC HT1000 but the unit doesn't play dirty/damaged discs well at all. What about the Phillips 963s? ---------------- The Pioneer at Best Buy I think was 179.99 as of last weekend. Sharp looking unit. you give up the better DACS and the progressive scan I think is not the same as the elite line, but for 179.99 and its a universal player.. its a pretty good deal.
  10. Because "Reference" models are not that much more expensive and blow "Synergy" away. Having said that, I am sure that "Synergy" still sells more units then "Reference." A former dealer did confide in me that it was usually 60% Synergy Sales to 40% Reference sales when I was shooting the Breeze with the guy. RW10 Sub is like $499.00 retail, the same retail price as KSW-12. RF-15s are the same retail price as SF-2 and RF-25 is just a little more in price. I guess if you could listen to the two side by side, you'd spend the few bucks extra for "Reference".
  11. That is a nightmare.... it would only be worse if you were forced to buy the extended warranty from best buy or whereever you upgraded them from.
  12. Diss, I am glad you like the system. 43TX is pretty cool AVR huh? Once you learn to fudge with the settings, it should sound better to your liking. You should be happy with your system. Klipsch speakers I find do sound very attractive when powered by a Pioneer Elite.
  13. Gary.... Good going!! Nice to be able to actually *FIND* something when you really need it. Bunker down... hopefully the storm will be weakened when it hits land. James

Also how much quality difference would I see between the RF- 25 's and the bookshelf speakers? What sub would go best with this system? I was thinking about the KSW -10 or 15. Thaks for the help... ---------------- Pioneer Elite VSX-45TX rocks. I really like this AVR. I would make sure I get the warranty for the SONY if you go that route. I think because the Repair facility used to be inside Sony West Headquarters in San Jose, I got this thing drilled in my head that a sony product will die within three years. Sorry... there was always a line at the repair center. The memories... the horrors. My SONY 2 channel and 4 channel amps for my car died in 23 months and my DVD player died right at 3 years. My Wega TVs tuner died in 16 months. My mother's VCR dies in less then three years. The only SONY product that I owned that did not die in less then three years is the DV-3000, one of the first DVD players out there. That guy is a champ, 6 years and going.. All the other electronics I owned had lasted at least 6 years. My JVC TV and VCR and mini bookshelf system is still working problems free after 7 years. AS for your second part of you question, go RW line. DO not do KSW 10 or 15. Too Boomy. RW-10 or RW-12 should fill your needs and will sound much better then KSW line. KSW line is great if you want to shake the windows, but if you want sound and not noise, go RW line. RSW line is even better but watch the $$$. Also RF line does sound deeper then their RB counterparts. Which is better depends on your listening tastes. Both are quality.. its up to you.
  15. Gary... Good luck to you. Knowing most people "buy" in need, I hope there is still something in stock. James

I have been looking at the Pioneer Elite DV-45A (the second from the top model in the Pioneer Elite DVD line). I have the Pioneer Elite VSX 43TX A/V receiver and I love it. I have read nothing but positive reviews about this DVD player. But do I really need a $1,000 (Canadian) DVD player? That sounds like a question only I can answer. If anyone has any comments or other recommendations re: a good, higher end DVD player, I would greatly appreciate your input. Thanks. ---------------- I have the DV-45A. A good player. Cheap in price if you get it off the net. Bass Management is weak. You will need to get a Outlaw ICBM in order to really enjoy SACDs. I am dissappointed in the bass output for music. AS far as video goes.. I like the picture, but many people complain about the chroma bug. Do a search in google to find out what that is. The Samsung seems impressive. One Caveat about the Samsung, you have to have a DVI input on your TV. You need to get DVI-D cables too. If your TV is far away from the player, this cable will run you a few bucks. Its not cheap. Not all HDTVs have a DVI input. The early models didn't. Most of the late models do. The Bravo D1 is a similar player at 100.00 less.. $199.00. Both are faroudja DCDi powered and DVI cable output. IF you are mainly watching movies, the Bravo D1 is something to look at. If you want a universal player.. the DV-45a is a good option. I think by the time you get the ICBM from outlaw though, you are already at the same price as DV47Ai. ALso getting the Ai will allow you to think about upgrading to the 55TXi for SACD ilink. If you do not want the SACDs, the Denon 1600 is a champ and plays DVD-As. Its being discontinued right now, so you might find some deals on it.

I have seen what Hurrican Fran had did to this area (mostly the large amount of flooding), and I do have pictures of it. This is a much more powerful storm than Fran is. Needless to say, I am very concerned. It is still a little early in the week, but it is expect ed that he storm will hit this area around Thursday. Time to hit the store and stock up on some food and water. ---------------- Here in California, with constant reminders of earthquakes, I always have backup food and water. Good to remember always have fresh batteries and water. We also have gas burners with canned gas so we can still cook in case utilities get shut off and stores are closed. Everybody should always keep 3-4 days of rations in supply just in case. I wonder how many people suffered needlessly like in the big blackout being unprepared? Cost isn't a real factor because water is not that expensive and dry goods are usually cheap. Take care and be prepared.
  18. Guess I will be heading to Best Buy tomorrow. That goodness for reward zone points.
  19. Klipsch speakers are fairly aggressive. Either you love them or you hate them. I stopped visiting the avsforum.com forums, too much klipsch bashing there.
  20. Thats my feeling.. Go authorized. I had a RC-25 that had wood damaged. Free shipping and replacement!!! Gotta love shopping authorized.
  21. To be honost, if it was entirely up the RIAA and ilk - they would demand payment if we went and hummed or whistled a tune in public! I honostly believe that thier ultimate goal is to make everything "pay-per-play" in that we would have to pay them everytime we wanted to play something. ---------------- Well said, If you sang that song, would the RIAA want you to pay for the whole CD that song is on, or just the price of the CD single?
  22. Its very weak bass management. supposedly, if you have small for the speakers, its supposed to route the bass to the sub.. but it doesn't work very well. bass is very weak.
  23. I guess the flip side to this arguement is the RIAA being guilty of unfair business practices and collusion. I have my own business. If I overprice my products.. I am out of business. The RIAA however, did condone and participate in unfair business practices which didn't allow fair competition and price fixing which is illegal. If they allowed competition for CD sales to happen, prices would have dropped long ago. DVDs prices dropped, VHS prices dropped. Audio CD prices did not as a direct result of price fixing. My analogy for this whole thing is robbing a bank and then complaining when someone else robbed you.
  24. Repeat of post in Home Theater Forum. Thought it would be more appropriate here: Sigh.....sorry guys.. I am about to write a book here. I think I moved too fast when building my 2 systems. Had I known that the 55TXi was going to come out with "ilink", I might have waited for a bit. Oh well.. what is the solution? Build a third system!!!! I am excited because you seem to get great results over ilink. In my setup, my DV-45a is connected with 3 pairs of RCS for multi channel, 1 pair for 2 channel and then coaxial for digital. One thing I am super frustrated by is that I just like the digital output more then analog output. (2 channel guys.. eat your heart out!!!) DVD-A and SACD over analog is sure frustrating me for sure. Examples: 1. Any regular audio CDs. With the music travelling over the Digital coaxial via PCM output, the sound is much more deeper. The Bass is much more intense and the sound to me is more full. Setting on the AVR is "Source Direct". I have almost listened to every CD I have in my collection, switching from 2 channel analog audio cable connection and Digital. Digital wins everytime. 2 channel analog utput just sounds hollow to me. 2. SACDs. I cannot tell you if this is the mixing or its the lack of bass management on my equipment. It just seems like with the 5.1 multi channel, the mixing seems to ignore the .1 channel alot of the times. Its like to me.. you have 6 connections. 1 is dedicated for the sub... why is there so little sound out of the subwoofer? I know there is a little output on the sub, but shouldn't the bass be more intensified? its like when they mixed it, they cut down on the bass. I have called Pioneer, set my crossover at 100hz. I have set my speakers to Small, and sub to on with both ends. Sub sounds much weaker when compared to regular CDs over PCM. I love the 5 channels on the highs and the mids. Its nice to have more fulfilling sound and have more direction from soem of the music. now please direct all the damn Bass to the .1 channel so I don't need to get external bass management equipment. 3. DVD-A and DVD music. What can I say? I have 2 DVD-As. One is the DTS surround Hell Freezes over by the Eagles, the other is Night at the opera by Queen. I pop in the eagles disc and listen in digital surround. ahh.. nice.. deep sounds, full sounds clean crisp concise music, bass is satisfactory when using DTS output over digital coaxial. Switch the AVR to analog 5.1 output. Bass output seemed to be cut in half. sound is more hollow and empty. AM I LISTENING TO BOSE ALL OF THE SUDDEN??? very dissappointing for me to be sure. Pop in the the Queen DVD-A. bohemian rhapsody in 5 channel.. very cool. low bass output AGAIN... not so cool. Bottom line, I have concluded either I need to change equipment to get more bass from the Subwoofer and go digital throughout. One thing I am still unclear about is does DVD-As go through ilink as well? I thought it was only SACD but I want to be sure. I guess I may have to get the outlaw ICBM to control all sounds under a certain frequency to the sub. To the gang here: 1. Will I get more bass "out of the box" by going DV47Ai? 2. Will the Outlaw ICBM save my DV45a from being weak?? is the DV45A the only player weak on bass? 3. How is the bass over ilink? thanks for the help... frustrated as hell and not sure where to go next.
