  1. Thanks for the plans Gil...how did the bottom end of these stack up against the khorn bottom end...let's say using the same woofer. Would there be a major difference in sound to what Klipsch produce today? Cheers
  2. Hi Lucky, Thanks for your review...sometimes you just don't get what ought to be given out of respect for effort and viewpoint....do I hear 'knocking' at the door?
  3. The BMS seems a more 'cheaper' alternative to the more expensive B&C...at least in my part of the world!
  4. Hi Al, Some great work again with some excellent follow up by others. I too have experimented with drivers and the Atlas is not a bad driver for what it does. I was wondering if you had ever come across the BMS 4592ND, it's a coax dual voice supposedly from 300hz to 22k hz??? Cheers
  5. Hi I have had the 'oldies' now the AK4 modded with tractrix and Altec 288 mid driver with Bob's tweet. PWK said eveything lives in the midrange, so I fiddled with it, used a new tweet and repostioned the drivers alignment and have never looked back, awesome advice I have recieved in this forum. The mods open up the sound stage front to back and side to side, more detail and clarity and no squweeling/honking and tinniness. Cheers
  6. HI, If you are handy with a soldering iron go and buy a good pair of connectors such as Eichmann and make some up yourself. Don't use multiple strands use a couple of thick (1mm) strands weave, solder and you will have something that defies expensive, ove-the-top BS! Cheers
  7. Hi, I had Forte II's for many year but they developed a problem...the woofer surrounds began to separate from the cone, the glue was the porblem. Check that you do not have this sort of problem. It did cause some diminishing (fluttering of base) Cheers
  8. If you have tested 'up the line', amp, pre-amp et al and the boxes themselves then the likely candidate is room placement. Swap the speakers around, that will tell you. Cheers
  9. Hi, I have the BYOB and did some mods to better mesh with my KHORNS and it is magic! The amp provides 'punch' like no other I have heard with the KHORNS and I have a few! The only trouble is this amp is bloody expensive! Cheers
  10. Hi and welcome, I am in Perth and have used a lot of amps tube, ss and this one - http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Altmann-BYOB-amplifier_W0QQitemZ360213720372QQcmdZViewItemQQptZAU_Electronics_Audio_Amplifiers?hash=item53de692d34. It uses a battery designed by Altmann. They are usually around $1500 to land in Oz but I am sure you can do a little better with even the current asking bid of $995, You will simply be amazed at the quality and speed with whatever music you play. You probably know that Khorns don't need power so whatever you buy it has to be clean so I would stick with low power quality A class if possible. The other amps that really go well are the smaller Nelson Pass amps, if you can get 'em. Quality SS amps have always provided me with superior detail and imagery over tube, but that's just me. Good luck p.s when you start to upgrade your horns with a tractrix mid you will really 'hear the music'
  11. Hi, I have built a tractrix and used instead of the K401 and have never looked back...so much more to offer in imagery, depth and clarity. The composite is better that the metal, not so much about 'ring' but more about tone! Cheers
  12. Great job, I thought you 'banana benders and rum drinkers' only surfed...i was wrong! What plans did you use. Cheers Steve
  13. Time flies when you are having fun...thanks for your help Gil All the best for another 10!
  14. Use to have exceptional hearing with tinnitus since 8. Now at 53, after a recent hear infection was tested at 15k in left and 18k in right, with a dip of 10db at around 5k in left over right (whatever that means), doctor said still pretty good for and 'old fart' with tinnitus! Cheers
  15. Hi Haven't heard Cornwall III but the others yes and in my mind the Chorus II, would be cheaper and overall sound has the tractrix balance and the 15" with the 'massive passive' works really well...don't know why they ever stopped production? Cheers
  16. ...and another...trying different pots and different resistors
  17. Hi Cyrus CD8 http://www.cyrusaudio.com/product.asp?ProductID=29 and power supply http://www.cyrusaudio.com/product.asp?ProductID=78. You can see the size of the boxes I am dealing with. By the way the shunts that I make (see http://luminousaudio.com/axiom.html for an example) are generally better than most pre-amps under $4k. There is only a single resistor in the path between input and output with a good pot used to control output. The people that have come into possession of these little wonders are simple astounded at what they can achieve for a couple of hundred bucks or as DIY with good parts maybe $100. All the best
  18. Hi SET12 I understand where you are coming from, their op amps really do the trick and I know of a few who have 'modded' some old boxes with o/s results. These things also work their magic in the buffer and what you are noticing so am I. My Cyrus player comes with its own separate power supply and I didn't think it possible to improve much more and I was even wondering if I did what you did if further improvements could be made?? Thanks
  19. Thanks Thebes, I'm no techo but I believe this device, like the others gone before it, drops the impedance between where it sits. It (in theory) is not suppose to influence what you hear with low impedance output devices such as what I have (Cyrus and Altmann have been tested at around 47ohms) but it does! Burson make a particular cool op amp which they use in the box and it has a high s/n ratio which also helps. They told me that it works really well with highly efficient speakers where passive pre-amps or flea powered amps (such as tubes) are used to drive the speakers and they were right. The box doesn't cost much in the scheme of things. Cheers
  20. Audio enthusiasts generally have a healthy interest, although cynical at times, around new bits of kit and gear that pop up from time to time in the audio market. When you weed your way through the snake charmers and medicine men you occasionally find something that catches your eye and you want to know more. I'm inquisitive but I get somewhat disappointed when I find what I thought was new, innovative and maybe a little different is just a 'pig with lipstick'! I have recently been in the 'pig pen' with the Burson Buffer (AB160). Yes I know buffers are nothing new and a few well know brands have had their shot a building one. I read some rather rave reviews and few others that said the BB did not do much for them in their audio set-up. So I assumed that this device had the potential to do something. I thought I would 'buy before I try'. I bought one from Burson in Melbourne Australia, where they are made. Burson have suppliers in the US and Canada, one well known supplier is Parts Connexion www.partsconnexion.com. The box finally got to my address and I opened and hooked the up BB AB160. I thought it was a little heavy for what you get and looked rather sexy so I was pleased with its aesthetics. This device can sit between your source (CD et al) and your pre-amp or between you pre-amp and amp. I have tried both ways. The first thing I noticed when I drove it through my 'powerless shunt' (similar to Axiom passive), that I made some months ago, was the immediate clarification of highs and lows. Things had more definition and punch and some bloating in the bottom end had gone. There was also better octave to octave integration and yes when you start to get excited you begin to hear more. I think it has to do with adrenalin levels but who cares if it makes you feel good...and it wasn't illegal! I put it away and then came back to it a few hours later and started to shift my bits of gear through it. All improved! I did not want to believe at first so I trotted my 17 year old son out to play the 'blind tester' (you can use 2 different sources or 2 different pre's in the hookup). AB testing is made easy and I did find out that the BB AB160 does not add much, if anything, to the final sound because I could tell significant differences between my bits of gear. I haven't been able to do this noting this sort of significance. My son could also tell the difference and not knowing what he was listening too (other than his music) he picked the BB as sounding better in 5 out of 6 trials. I tried Altmann Dac, Cyrus CD8, a few different shunts with different values, Morrison ELAD and a rather intersting Class A tube pre-amp. The amp I used in all trials was the Pass Aleph 30 but will try a few others I have. Speakers are of course 2004 Khorns moded with Crites tweeters and a tractrix to a Altec 288 16. So apart from a good weight and nice looking box you get a device that actually works its magic on system to system impedance and delivers better clarity, imagery and the sensation of improved speed and attack that I think Burson need to rename this the 'Audio Broom 160'...it simply just cleans things up! Check out www.bursonaudio.com and see what they have on offer they also build amps! Cheers Steve p.s. hopefully my picture loads...I always have trouble in this forum must be because I am soooo farrrr awayyyyyyy
  21. Hey Colin, I have just picked up your thread and I too "dual-amp" my AK4 Khorns. I use 2 shunts (volume pots) I made (similar to Luminous Axiom but better) connected to an Altmann 10w BYOB for top end and Pass Aleph 30 for the bottom end. I get all the control I need through the shunts, dialling in volume . I converted the mid horns to tractrix I built and sit Crites tweeters a top on the vertical. I am amazed at the the clarity I now get with greater imagery. It is ugly, I need to build a top hat to fit but even the wife thinks the sound is a vast improvement. Very happy! Cheers
  22. Hi I have interposed a pre-amp/amp to speaker input to drive the woofer and same again to drive mid/tweet. The Khorns allow for this just like a bi-wire but it is a bi-amp. It is 2 pre's (resistor/shunt with Noble pot) to 2 amps. I have carefully chosen the amps which are Pass Aleph 30 and an Altman BYOB. You don't need to drive them hard and the voltage from CD is sufficient. The pots really assit the levels I need to gain balance. I built a tractrix that delivers much more detail and even more detail when I use my Altec 288 16k's to their own tractrix. Keeps me busy! Cheers
  23. Hi, Congrats on a great purchase. I ended up like you wanting to fiddle a little with the sound of my 2004 Khorns so I made some changes to the room then built a tractrix, purchased Bobs tweet then bi-amped with separate shunt devices built for top/bottom leveling. I must say the whole set-up now blows me away - still using the AK4 network! I think having separate amps with their own pre (shunt) makes the tractrix and tweeter (in the vertical) really work with the bottom end. Very magical. All the best
  24. Did you try the k77 in the vertical...to me it sounds way better! Cheers
