  1. Had dinner at my place once. I was volunteered to help prepare. Father in law told me he always skins the asparagus to get the nubs off. FIL has arthritis and is slow. Relative to him, Im fast & furious. I took his advice to heart (having never prepared it before) and skinned them just like you might a carrot. I ALSO skinned the nub at the end off. I was WIZZING through them and had about ½ of them done. Imagine the horror of my father in law when he saw the sharpened pencil sticks I was so quickly piling up. Little did I know at the time that the tips (which I so skillfully shaved off into a point) was the best part. They do not allow me to help prepare the asparagus anymore.
  2. My neighbor bought some just a couple months ago. He told me about them AFTER he helped me unload my Khorns. He told me they were 1,000 watt speakers!!! ?? not sure exactly what that means. I'm looking forward to getting my little flea powered amp and show him what my speakers can do on 3 1/2 watts... then OMG... just think about what HIS will do since they are 1,000 watters...
  3. Just did a search on Bob Geldof, went to his site. From there went to the live 8 site. They have a listing of the bands. *Curently* none of the venues show Floyd playing. I saw them in Nashville doing the Pulse tour in 94, was beyond words. Held in Vanderbilt's football stadium as I recall, the huge speakers on the stage, speakers on each side of the field and speakers on the opposite side of field. All 4 sides... was unreal. Went to Nashville to take a qualification test. Test was following morning, needed a 70 to pass. Left concert, traffic, visited a friend, chatted... late to bed (2AM??), early to rise Failed test got a 68% and had to retake it 30 days later (and passed)

BS ---------------- You sir, are being diplomatic lol Yes, I work in (west) Knoxville and live in Greenback. I'm absolutely sure that Greenback qualifies as the boonies. Interesting thing about Greenback is you can't get there from Knoxville. You must first either go through Maryville or Lenoir City. If you're in K-town I'd be happy to let you buy lunch or, if you happen to be passing through Greenback, FIRST off, you are REALLY lost... that said, well... let's just leave it at you'd be REALLY lost.
  5. ---------------- On 6/8/2005 3:15:45 PM Jimmy James wrote: Can't comment about your SACDs, I'm strictly a 2-channel man. ---------------- Thank you sir, but so you and others reading will know, I'm not concerned about the 2ch/SACD comment on Miles Davis as I'm sure most of his stuff was on 2ch for decades. I'm just curious for a blind stab at something in the Jazz world, if he's a good example.
  6. Today on a whim, I bought a Sony SCD CD595. It's a 5 disk SACD changer. Now remember, I currently only have 2CH. Multi channel is down the road. My EXISTING "cd" player is a CD/DVD Sony changer, DVP NC600. My understanding is a CD/DVD player won't sound as good as a dedicated CD player. I'm planning on getting a tube cd player but I just ordered Al's ES Khorn networks soooooooooo, the tube CD player has to wait. But, for $163 out the door, I figured I had not much to lose. I've not opened it yet pending some thoughts here. How might this sound in 2-ch, verses the DVP NC600 in 2ch? In additon to that, I bought 3 SACD disks, DSOTM, which I don't have in ANY format, other than the Pulse cd live. The Who, Live at Royal Albert Hall And here is the one I'm blindly guessing on Miles Davis: Jazz at the Plaza Their selection (best buy) of SACD was about 50 selections if not less. I only wanted to get DSOTM but saw The Who so got it too. Then I thought about a Jazz/Classical or other and just grabbed one since I don't know much. So, opionions on the player and on Miles Davis:Jazz at the Plaze please?

  8. Marry her again! My wife is on the other extreme calling my Khorns ugly and "WAY out of style". She'd banish them to the basement herself if she was able to move them. You think since I had a pair of LaScalas and a pair of EV's (about same size as LaScalas) when we met that she'd understand that I'm sort of a package deal?????
  9. Anyone want to have a demo party in Knoxville, TN? I live out on a lake in the middle of 250 acres so there are NO neighbors to contend with other than Father in law & Uncle in law. Uncle in law is 50% deaf so he wont mind the noise Ive got a pair of AK3 Khorns (unsure of year). Im probably going to get Als extreme slope crossovers (hope in month or so) when Mr. Budget & I are on speaking terms. I would not accuse the room of having ANY treatments done though. I have a Peach preamp that is currently NOT being used and just waiting for a mate. I have a Jolida 502B (stock) that IS being used. I also have some Academys (can hook up for stereo) Ive got a hankering to hear some nice 2A3s, SE-OTL, bigger OTL, 300B, McIntosh mated to my Peach or your pre if you bring it (and almost any other tubes to try to figure out what I want to target for myself). Id also like to hear any/some tube CD players, specifically the Jolida or Shanling, which are about all Ive heard about. Ive got a Sony DVD/CD player and I want to swap it out too. I figure if there are others near enough by, perhaps you can hear the extreme sloped Khorns, Academys, Peach, Jolida amp and bring what you might have. If we do it on a Saturday or Sunday, we can also fire up the grill and Ill either supply the BBQ chicken or perhaps if we get some REAL special equipment, Ill get some ribs from Montgomery Inn in Cincinnati (www.montgomeryinn.com) The ribs are probably a TERRIBLE idea with messy hands & electronics but ya only live once. Well appoint a person to be the designated clean hands and they can swap equipment out. Oh, and in the off chance there are takers, my wife nor myself drink alcohol so I wont know what to get. Ill have you to bring your own if you wish and I have a WONDERFUL fridge in the garage that will take things to a near freezing point. Strike an interest in anyone?
  10. I guess the odds aren't that high of everyone before me passing, but I'd also raise my hand to express interest. This stinks too, I recently "gave" my Miata to someone for $300 on ebay. I ended the auction early just to try to help him out (I was more interested in getting rid of it than making anything on it & he had a perfect rating so I closed auction) heck, I'd given it to you just to help keep you mobile. Being a convertible, I've carried a TON of things in it. Pull top back & the sky is the limit Before anyone thinks I was the saint that my dogs think I am, it had about 205,000 on it, was ugly BUT mechanically reliable.
  11. No state income tax in Tennessee Of course, where I live (Greenback, near Knoxville) it makes Mayberry seem like New York City Our "downtown" has 1 drugstore that's not a working drugstore but now a restauraunt (with a drugstore signage), post office, bank, stopsign, haircut place and another building or two. It's about 1 block long and is 1/2 parking area I'm not sure if they have shoes here yet? (ok, for fellow Tenneseeians, that was just a joke)
  12. What do you mean, AK-3's would be fine? Fine for what? (other than to send to people ) ??
  13. I've got a Niles switchbox on the way to me shortly (thank you James). I plan on attaching two amps to a single pair of Khorns. When I do that it dawned on me I might be able to A/B some amps and finally come to grips on which I like blah blah blah. Ok, so if I have two sets of tube amps on, they will both be wired to the Niles evidently. I seem to recall being told/read that I should NOT turn a tube amp on UNLESS it's connected to my speakers. I have no idea why, that's just my memory. If that is true, how does the switchbox come into play? Does that make it "ok" to have both amps on so I can A/b? or is that the same as having one amp disconnected from speakers and I'm at risk? If I'm at risk of some kind or another, what IS the big deal about being sure amp/speakers are connected while turned on? If this is such an issue with tubes (uh oh) than why even HAVE a switchbox? lol. .... this just dawned on me that I might have just bought a worthless box? Thoughts?
  14. Memory tells me I have the AK3 ?? They SOUND just fine & dandy to me, but then again, so did my LaScalas (after a 5 year storage) last summer when we pulled them out for a party. The LaScalas are AA's and are 25 years old and sounded "fantastic" so what do my ears know? ( might subtly add that I used Yamaha SS for said 25 years and NEVER heard tubes, so I don't think anyone would accuse me of being an accoustic connesouir) Perhaps I should just put all new drivers in??? I'd bet I could put some of those Bose cubes behind the grills and no one would ever know???
  15. I admit to being tempted into Al's extreme networks for my Khorns. When Mr. Budget & I get on better footing and I do this, what do you do with the old ones? * Junk them? * Keep them for "stock purposes" in case you ever sell? * Keem them INSIDE the Khorn so it's stored, out of the way? (IOW, can both sets be MOUNTED (not connected) inside the speaker, or must one be removed (as a matter of fact) because of space considerations? I can't imagine they'd be good use for much of anything once they become a second pair??
  16. Toooooooooooooo Muchhhhhhhhhhhhhh Informationnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn
  17. Ok, so sub suggestions? (room approx 16x24)
  18. Quoted from Shade in another thread, but I didn't want to hijack that thread "If you're wiring for 5.1, the surrounds would be on the sides of your sofa, or to the sides and a bit behind. Depends on the speakers, room, and personal preference. For 6.1, same as the above, but with an extra speaker directly behind you. For 7.1, surrounds on the sides of your sofa, with the 2 rears behind it. Spacing between the 2 rears again depends on the speakers, room, and personal preference." I thought "surround" sound would have had the 5.1 setup with two speakers BEHIND you?? If your room is say, 16x24 and the 16' wall is the "front", would it be better to have the "rear" speakers beside you (at about 10' from wall, or behind you on opposite wall? I always presumed it to be the opposite wall and I've prewired that way. Thankfully, if I prewired wrong, I have open studs still and can redo it.
  19. I must admit it was seeing yours for sale that rekindled the idea again.
  20. I notice there are again, several Academy's on EBAY which brings the quesiton back to me. If someone were to make a HT system (5.1) with ALL five Academy's, what is the consensus as to how that might sound. Furthermore, if someone did that and needed to get a sub, which sub might you suggest mates with the Academy's for HT? (Before anyone mentions how expensive it might be to buy 5 Academys to make a HT system, please know I already have THREE, so it wouldn't be such a stretch) I'm "planning" on making my HT system LaScalas in front, Khorns in rear and ?? for center (WAF dependent but LaScala strikes me as likely) I was also going to cross wire such that I could utilize my Khorns for 2ch also. Doing above dictates I rid myself of my 3 Academy's. If on the otherhand, I make a HT system with 5 Academy's, I could get better placement perhaps with the smaller speakers, I could then ditch the LaScalas and I could have two seperate systems. 5 Academy's for HT, and the Khorns for 2ch with no cross wiring. Just another angle I'm contemplating, so I'm looking for thoughts on Academy's & sub.
  21. If he doesn't take you up on that offer and it's still good, let me know and I'll take you up on it.
  22. If you look at the next to last picture, is it me, or does it look like black overspray/undercoat on the exhaust pipe just before the muffler? If the car is/was never to be used and inside a temp controlled room, would it REALLY be necessary to undercoat it?
