But as for the topic, since movies are produced for the theater in multi-channel sound, why would they not continue to be released as dvd's with muti-channel sound with options for stereo as they are now?

Good questions bum. There is a thread where we tried recommending a simple, effective turntable but as usual these things end up with the most complicated, maintenance intensive suggestions drowning reason out. You might try a search in two channel on the subject for some laughs.

Those are good guidelines, but in trying to make him feel better, if it is just to the surrounds then it won't be all that bad. For example, I have 18ga running a little longer than the chart recommends to the surrounds and it is liveable. If I get the urge I can upgrade by attaching and pulling since I am not anchored anywhere along the way, but it's not the first project on my extensive list of things to do around the house.

No you said you would report back. Plus none of us are in the room. What I would say is let your ears be your guide. If you are listening to cd's then I am not surprised it "almost" hurts your ears.

It'll work ok, you shouldn't lose sleep over it. How long are the runs? That will be the real determinant. Is there no way to connect and pull larger wire to the smaller and replace it, or do you have it anchored inside the walls? Hey, sometimes you gotta go with what you got. The surrounds are not nearly as important as the fronts. Use a larger wire for the front three and live with the rest if you can't somehow retrofit the surrounds wire.
